Be itknown that l, Ulrich O. JoHNsoN, f the United titates, residing in Chicago, in the county oi Cook and titate oi lllinois, have invented a new and useful limproi'einent in Apparatus for and Processes of 'lruing Coopers Truss Hoops, of which the tollowin 's a specification.
This invention relates in genera to the truing ot' coopers truss hoops and, while the apparatus forth as embodying the invention is particularly adapted for tho truing oi? coopers truss hoops after they have become distorted in service, it will be readily manifest that the invention has valuable use in connection with the accurate truing of such devices by the manutacturer originally supplying them.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a coopers truss truing apparatus in which my present invention is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2; and I l is a perspective view of one of the truss hoops V in describing my present invention I will first describe the apparatus, shown on the drawing. ill which it at present preterably embodied. Referring to this apparatus, reference character 11 indicates a strong, rigid bed supported upon three or more legs 12. riot each side the bed. is provided with bosses 13 in which are mounted posts 141- carrying an arbor 15 at their tops.
Referrin now to Fig. 3 it will. be noted that the bed 11 is provided with an upstanding enclosed flange or walllo and with a central opening or aperture 1'? adapted to be closed by a plug 18. If desired a strengthening web or depending flange 19 may be provided. A ul'QSS screw 23. is threadedly engaged in a threaded b ttll'lllg plug 22 in the arbor 15 and this arbor may consist. of two main channel members connected together by the plug- 22 and by end connecting; plugs 24- throun'h which the posts 14: extend. A head or plunger member is mounted upon the lower end of the screw 21, this screw having an enlarged lower end 26 fitting in an opening 27 in the hub 28 of the head or plunger 25 and being held against independent longitudinal movement of the screw by a pusher 29 locked in place by aset screw'31. ihis permits of the rotation oi the screw independen ly of the press head. The press head includes in. addition to the hub 22 a number (four in the present instance) of arms or spokes 32 terminating in an integral annular rim or body 83. The arms 32 and rim are slotted at 3ato receive screws or other fastening devices 35 which carry a truing member 36, said fastening devices being adjustable in said slots to permit the use of trains; members of difierent diameters. This truing member is tapered on its outer face and is preferably of annular form and has an outwardly extending flange 37 at its top adapted to form a stop for the truss hoop in the action of said truing member. The truss ring is indicated by reference character 38 and it will-be noted that it has a tapering inner face. the outer face of the truing member 36 having substantially the taper of thisinner face .of the truss ring. The width of the tapered face of the truing member is preferably exactly equal to the width of the tapered face of the ring.
In truing the ring, the ring is first heated to a cherry red and then placed over the truing member 36 and the press screw screwed down until the ring is forced up against the shoulder 3'? throughout its entire circumference. Preferably while this pressure is still upon it, water or other cooling medium is poured upon the bed and within the wall 16 so that this bed and wall constitute a tank. In thus cooling or chilling the truss ring it is further contracted and set in its true'd condition.
It is thought that the invention, both as regards the process and the apparatus, will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. An apparatus for truing coopers truss hoops, comprising, a size determining means insertable into a hoop, clamping means for securing the hoop against axial movement, and means for shrinking the hoop against said size determining device.
2. An apparatus for truing coopers truss hoops, comprising, a form determining means insertable into a hoop, clamping means for securing the hoop against axial movement, and means for shrinking the hoop against said form determining device.
3. An apparatus for truing coopers truss hoops, comprising a size determining means insertable into a hoop, clamping means for securing the hoop against axial movement and providing space for radial truing movement of said hoop while clamped throughout its circumference, and means for shrinking the hoop against said size determining device.
t. An apparatus for truing coopers truss hoops, comprising a tapered member adapted to enter into the hoop, a tank co-operating with said hoop, squeeze devices for producing relative movement between said member and tank for forcing the hoop on to the tapered member, said tank serving to receive liquid to contract the hoop about said tapered member after said hoop has been forced thereon.
5. An apparatus for truing coopers truss hoops, comprising a press bed, a press plunger, a tapered member carried by the press plunger and adapted to enter into a coopers truss hoop to squeeze the same into place against said bed, and means associated with said tapered member for limiting the truing movement of the hoop.
6. An apparatus for truing coopers truss hoops, comprising an annulus having a tapered surface substantially the width of the tapered surface of the hoop, a stop for limiting movement of the hoop along said tapered member, and compression means for forcing said hoop into engagement with said stop.
7. An apparatus for truing coopers truss hoops, comprising a press bed, a press head, a truing tapered member carried by the press head and connected thereto, and connections between said press head and said truing member being adapted for various arrangement radially of said press head to permit of the use of truing members of different sizes.
8. The process of truing coopers truss hoops, comprising placing the same about a tapered member entering the truss hoop, forcing the truss hoop along said tapered member against a fixed stop to insure even movement throughout its circumference, and thereafter contracting said hoop.
9. The process of truing coopers truss hoops, comprising placing the same about a tapered member entering the truss hoop, forcing the truss hoop along said tapered member against a fixed stop to insure even movement throughout its circumference, and thereafter contracting said hoop while under the compressing pressure.
10. The process of truing coopers truss hoops, which consists in heating the hoop, positioning the hoop about a size determining device, confining the hoop against axial movement, and shrinking the hoop about said'size determining device.
11. The process of truing coopers truss hoops, which consists in heating the hoop,
positioning the hoop about a size determining device, confining the hoop against axial movement, and shrinking the hoop about said size determining device by means of a heat conducting liquid.
