B. L. ROBISON MARCEL WAVER Filed sent. 19. 1924 ELI-503127071 mm Patented Get. 13, 1925.
UNITED STATES BLANGHE LENO-RE ROBISON, OF TOIPEKA, KANSAS.
MARCEL WAVER.
Application filed September 19, 1924. Serial No. 738,612.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BLANCHE L. ROBI- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Marcel lV-aver, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair curling irons and more particularly to irons designed to form a- Marcel wave.
The object of the invention is to. curl or wave the hair while it lies flat against the head and which may be easily accomplished without requiring the services of a hair dresser or a maid. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a Marcel waver in which the hair is clamped between two plates equipped with shiftable means whereb one portion of the hair is held stationary while the adjacent portion is shifted to form the wave desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a plan view of a waver constructed in accordance with this invention with the plates in open position;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, the handles being broken off for convenience in illustration;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the waver with the members in closed operative position; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse section showing a slightly modified form adapted to accommodate an electric heating unit.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 a comb carrying member'l has hinged to one end thereof a clamping member or plate 10. These members 1 and 10 are provided at their free ends with longitudinally extending handles 2 and 11 respectively which may be secured thereto in any suitable or desired manner and which are designed to overlie each other when the members are closed as shown in Fig. 3.
The comb carrying member 1 may be of any desired size according to the number of ate with longitudinally,movable combs 21 V I carried by a sliding plate 20 mounted on plate 1 and which is here shown provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending slots 22 through which extend longitudinally alined headed studs 23 carried by the plate 1 and which form guides for the plate 20 to hold the movable combs in cooperative relation with the combs 3 for a purposepresently to be described. The plate 20 has a longitudinally extending bail like brace 24: arranged at its innei end which carries on its outer face a headed studor button 25 which projects through a longitudinally extending slot 12 in the clamping plate 10 when the latter is in closed position to permit the plate 20 to be slid back and forth on plate 1. It is of course understood that the operating means for the sliding plate 20 may be varied the brace carried button being desirable because it locates the button nearer the handle of the device.
The clamping plate 10 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending transversely spaced slots or perforations 13 and 14. positioned to register with the combs carried by the member 1 the side edges of said plate 10 being cut out as shown at 15 to receive the combs located at the side edges of member 1. The slot 13 and the mortised portion or recess 15 are of the same length and are designed to have passed therethrough the stationary combs 3 while slot 14 and recess 16 are of the same length and are of greater length than the slot 13 and recess 15 to receive the sliding teeth or combs 21 to permit said combs to move relatively to the plate 10 for a purpose presently to be described.
The member 1 is here shown equipped at its hinged edge with longitudinally extending lugs 5 which are designed to form rests for the clamping plate 10 when in open position to prevent said plate from swinging beyond a predetermined position.
A handle 6 extends longitudinally from the inner hinged edge of member 1 and extends in a direction opposite to the overlapping handles 11 and 2 when the device is in operative position so that both hands may be used if desired for supporting 1t.
The intermediate stationary comb is preferably carriedby plate 4 whichvpreferably covers the entire space between the rows of teeth so as to avoid danger of the hair being caught and entangled.
The device shown in Fig. 4 is exaotlylike that shown in the other figures except that the member 1 is equipped with a chamber 7 to receive the heating unit when the curler is electrically heated and when so heatedthe electric cord will preferably enter through the handle at the free end of the member 1*.
This curler may be heated in any desired manner in which heat can .be brought into contact with the members 1 and 10.
In the use of the curlerthe hair is placed in the heated iron while the combs are in a straight line, that is, while they are alined transversely. The top or clamping plate 10 is then partially closed and presses the hair down between the combs. The movable combs 21 are then moved longitudinally by shifting the plate which produces waves in the hair. The top plate is then closed tightly and held firmly until the heat sets the waves in the hair.
WVhen the wave in the hair has been set sufiiciently, the handles 11 and 2 are released and the clamping plate 10 swung into open position to permit the hair to be removed from the curler.
I claim A Marcel waver comprising a comb carrying plate having longitudinally extending laterally spaced combs secured thereto, a sliding plate mounted on said first mentioned plate and having transversely spaced combs to alternate with those on the fixed plate, said plates one having slots and the other headed studs to form guides for the movable plate, a longitudinally extending bail-like brace carried by said movable plate having a laterally extending button, a hinged plate carried by said first mentioned plate and having a slot to fit over said button, said hinged plate being also provided with longitudinally extending transversely spaced spots to fit over the fixed and movable combs, the slots for the movable combs being longerthan those for the fixed combs.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aifixed my signature.
