To all co/tom t may Gor/wcm Be it known that I, EMMA Hui-IN, a citizen of thel United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ofiCool and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in llVindow Seats, 0f which` the following is a specification.

This invention relates to window seats especially adapted for use by win-dow washers.

An impoi'tant aim of this invention is to provide a window chair or seat which may be conveniently secured in a window opening to provide a safe place for a window washer to sit during the washing of the outsides of the upper and lower sashes, the invention providing` means whereby both hands of the operator are free for use during the washing of the windows.

A further object of the invention is to provide a window chair of the character specified which is of highly simplified construction, simple to adjust, and cheap to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

Fig. 4 is a plan view of the chair .in place in the window frame.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 generally designates the seat of the improved chair, which seat consists of a pair of rails G to which the panels 7 are connected in any suitable manner.

Figs. 1 and 3 illustrate that the front and rear legs 8 and 9, respectively, are rigidly connected to the seat and are joined by cross members 1l. Fig. l illustrates that the front and rear legs 8 and 9, respectively, are adapted to straddle the window sill 12 and the adjacent portion of the wall 14 and the cross member 1l of the front legs may be provided with feed screws 1G connected at their forward ends as indicated at 18 to a fastening strip 20. rIhe rear ends of the feed screws 16 are provided with winged heads 22 adapted to be manually turned. lto .force/the holding strip 20 firmly into engagement with the adjacent portion'of the wallor window sill as the case maybe. l/Qlien the strip 2O is thus forced flatly into `contact with thel wal-l or window sill the chair` is `firmly held in position and cannot accidentally tip or swing out of its proper place in the window frame.

The back generally designated by the numeral 26 consists principally of a pair of spaced parallel inclined rails 28 rigidly secured intermediate their ends to the rear ends of the rails 6 and secured in any suitable manner at their lower endsl to the intermediate portions of the rear legs 9. It will be seen with reference to Figs. l and 3 that the rails 6 are extended substantial distances beyond the upper port-ions of the legs 9 and support the rails 28 in an inclined position. rIhe rails 28 are provided with panels 30.

In carrying out the invention the chair is firmly held in position by the strip 20 and by a holding bar 36 adapted to be extended beyond the sides of the window frame and provided with a pair of straps or loops 38, the rear portions of which are extended about theinclined rails 28 and the upper panel 30..

In the use of the invention, the chair is first placed in the window frame as illustrated in Fig. 1 and the holding strip 2O is tightened so that the chair is firmly anchored in place. The holding bar 36 is now extended beyond the sides of the window frame and the straps 38 are extended about the bar so as to cooperate with the holding strip 2O in holding the chair in place. Attention is also directed to the fact that the loops 88 also form sides for the chair and thereby prevent the occupant from falling out.

lilith reference to the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a window washers seat constructed in accordance with 'this invention may be conveniently applied to a window of almost any size and when in place will provide a safe supporting means for a window washer. As the loops 38 are arranged at both sides and are detachable, they provide a reliable means to hold the chair in place and to prevent the occupant from falling out of the chair sideways.

Particular attention is directed to the llt) fact that the bar 36 is not permanently located at the front of the chair and consequently does not in any Way interfere with the ease With Which the Window Washer may enter or lea-ve the chair. The bar 36 is placed in position after the occupant takes his or lier seat and is removed before the occupant attempts to leave the seat, the bar being disposed above the knee of the occupant and in position to form a hand grip.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

A chair for use by Window Washers comprising front and rear legs, a seat having horizontal rails rigidly secured to the upper portions of said legs, a bacl having inclined rails secured to the rear ends of the firstnamed rails and to said rear legs, said front and rear legs being adapted to straddle a Window frame', flexible loops extended about the upper portions of said secondnamed rails and forming flexible detachable sides for said chair, and a bar adapted to be passed through the forward portions of said loops and having its ends extended beyond the sides oit the Windowr frame at substantially the height of the chair back to hold the chair in position, said loops being located at opposite sides of the chair to prevent the occupant from falling out side- Ways.
