DOOR-CONTROL MEANS.

To all whom it may concern. I
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. Hoscnrr, and DAVID HINDAHL, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in DOO1'-C011- trol Means, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to door control means.
The present invention has been illustrated and will be described in connection with door control means for railway dump cars.
Railway dump cars are commonly provided with dump doors at the bottoms of said cars, which doors have a swinging movement, said swinging movement being controlled by certain operating mechanism. It is not always desirable to depend upon said operating mechanism for maintaining said doors in closed position against the weightof the lading held by said doors, and the present invention has for one of its objects the provision of readily operable control means for holding a door in closed position independently of the operating mechanism for said door.
A further object is to provide latch mechanism adapted to cooperate with a movable door, to hold said door in closed position even though said door is heavily weighted with lading, which latch mechanism is readily operable to permit the opening of said door.
A further object is to provide a latch mechanism for holdinga door closed, which is readily operable for permitting the opening of said door and which will automatically move to holding position when said door is moved to closed position.
A further object is to provide door control means for taking the weight on a rail way dump door which door control means is readily adaptable to types of cars now in common use. i
Further objects will appear as the descrip tion proceeds.

The present invention has been illustrated in connection with a dump car 1, having side walls 2, only one of which is illustrated. on either side of said center sill are sloping bottom Walls forming a hopper. A palr of said sloping bottom walls, indicated by the numeral 1, are located adjacent to the center section 3, one on either side thereof, and the others of said bottom walls, indicated by the numeral 5, are located adjacent to the side.

Certain link mechanism, indicated by the numeral 8, has been shown for operating the two dump doors 66. Said link mechanism, which need not be described in detail herein, inasmuch as it forms no part of the present invention, is operated by the transversely extending shaft 9 through mechanism not shown. It may be stated that rotation of the shaft 9 in one direction operates through link mechanism 8, to cause the opening of the dump doors 6-6, while rotation in the reverse direction results in the closing of the dump doors 66. It will be clear that opening of the dump doors 6-6 will result in depositing the lading below the longitudinal.

Each of the doors 66 is provided with an intermediate swinging door 10, pivoted for swinging movement about the axes Said car has the center sill 3, and
11-11, extending longitudinally of the car.
Each axis 11 is located adjacent to the corresponding sloping bottom wall 4 so that when said intermediate door 10 is swung to open position, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, ladingwill be directed outside of the tracks on which the car is mounted. Each intermediate door 10 is, according to the illustrated embodiment of the present in vention, controlled by chain 12 which may for the intermediate door which will be described hereinafter. It will be understood that when it is desired to deposit lading outside ofthe tracks on which the car is mounted, the shaft 13 will be rotated to permit an opening movement of intermediate door 10, swinging about the axis 11. Vhen it is desired to close either of the intermediate doors 10 the corresponding shaft 13 will be rotated in a reverse direction, whereby the corresponding chain 12 will be actuated to move the door 10 to closed position.
As indicated hereinbefor'e, an object of the present invention is to provide holding means for the intermediate doors 10, when said doors are in closed position, whereby to relieve the chains '12 and shafts 13 of'the duty of holding said intermediate doors closed.
The numeral 14 indicates one of a pair of brackets which are securely fastened to the frame of thecar adjacentto the side walls 5 5. Said brackets 14: provide pivotal mountings for the dump doors 66. The
' pivotal mounting for each door 6 isaccomplished through the angular bracket 15 which is swingingly mounted upon the longitudinally extending shaft 7, as clearly indicated in Figure '2, an aperture 16 being provided in said bracket 15 for receiving the shaft 7. Said bracket 15 'is provided with the arm Jortion 17 which is rie'idh fastened to apart of the dump door 6 wl ereby said dump door 6 and bracket 15 opcrate as a unit. The bracket-leis provided with an arm portion 18 which may be bifurcated as shown in Figure 3, the bifurcated parts being "provided with aligned apertures 19 for the reception ofth'e pin 20, which pin 20 serves as an axis for the latch member 21. The latch member 21 is provided with an aperture 22 adapted to receive said pin 20.
The details of the latch. member 21 are indicated in Figure '41. Said latch member 21 is provided with an 'arcuate surface 23 adapted to engage under the swinging edge of the corresponding intermediate door 10 when said intermediate door is in closed position, as indicated in full line's'in Figures '1 and 3. The latch member 21 isprovided with the receptacle 241 for receiving an opcrating bar 25,indicate'd in dotted lines in Figure 2, which said bar 25 should pref erably be readily insertable into and'r'eadily removable fromthe said receptacle leaving no obtruding parts'when manual'operation of the latch member is not required. Projecting from the latch member 21, is the stop member 26 adapted to cooperate with the stop member 27 upon the'bracket '15. Said stop members 26 and 27 are 'so located relative to one another that when the intermediate door 10 is in open position, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, the
latch member 21 will be permitted to rotate in a counterclockwise direction, only to a. limited extent. The stop members 26 and 27 will cooperate to permitthe latch member 21 to rotate in a counterclockwise direction to a position such that the swinging edge of the intermediate door 10, in moving from open position to closed position, will engage the surface 28 of the latch member 21 to move said latch member 21 in a clockwise direction, to permit the movement of intermediate door 10 to closed position.
The weight of'the latch member 21 will be so disposed that after the swinging edge of the intermediate door 10has passed said latch member, said latch member will. under the influence of gravity, move in a counterclockwise direction whereby the arcuate surface 28 of the latch member 21 will be disposed underneath the swinging edge of. the intermediate door 10. The intermediate door 10 may now settle under the weight of the lading carried by said door and will be secarely held by the latch member 21 entirely independently of'the chain 12 and the opt-mating mechanism therefor.

For the purpose of simplifying movement oflatch member '21, the bearing surface 23' thereof should preferably be of arcu'ate form having 'its axisapproximately coincident with the pivotal axis of member 21. The intermediate door 10 may-now be permitted to move to the desired position, said position being controlled by the chain 12 and the operating mechanism therefor.
Vhen the intermediate door 10, swings past the latch-member 21,'the bar 25 may be removed from said latch member, and said -latch member will, under the influence of gravity move in a counterclockwise direction to a position inwhich the stop member 26 of said latch member engages with the stop member 2701f the bracket- 15. hen it is desired to again close the intermediate door 10, such movement will be accomplished by operating thechain 12. In a closing movement the'swinging edge of the intermediate"door 1O willengage the surface 28 of the latch member 21, moving said latch member in a clockwise direction out of the path of said intermediate door 10. After the swinging edge of said inte'r'me- *diate door 10 has passed the latch member chain 12,1'0 prevent the accidental opening of the intermediate door 10.
Particular note is made of the fact that the latch members 21, 21 are mounted upon parts which swing with the main doors 6, 6, whereby the latching eilect of each of said members :21, 21 is unafiected by move ment of said main doors 6, 6. This point is illustrated in Figure6, which shows in full lines, an open positionof one of said main doors 6, and in broken lines the closed position of said door 6. 7
Though a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described in detail. many modifications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is intended in this patentto cover all such modifications that fall within the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a railway dump car, sloping bottom walls forming a part of a hopper, a swinging door forming a closure for said sloping bottom walls, said swinging door being disposed to direct lading intermediate of the tracks upon which said car is mounted, said door being provided with an intermediate door for directing lading outside of the tracks upon which said car is mounted, a mounting member rigidly united to said first mentioned door for swingingly supporting said door, said mounting member being provided with a swinging latch mem ber biased to underlie said intermediate door, when said intermediate door is in closed position.
2. In a railway dump car in combination, a car body and swinging door means for selectively directing lading from said car body either between the tracks upon which the car is mounted or outside of said tracks, said door means comprising a main door, an intermediate door in said main door, said main door being provided with a pivoted member biased to underlie the swinging edge ofsaid intermediate door when said intermediate door is in closed position.
3. In a railway dump car in combination, a car body and swinging door means for selectively directing lading from said car body either between the tracks upon which the car is mounted or outside of said tracks, said door means comprising a main door, an intermediate door in said main door, said main door being provided with a pivoted member biased to underlie the swinging edge of said intermediate door when said intermediate door is in closed position, said pivoted member being pro vided with a substantially arcuate bearing surface having its axis of curvature located approximately at the axis of pivotal move ment of said member.
4. In a railway dump car in combination, a car body and swinging door means for selectively directing lading from said car body either between the tracks upon which the car is mounted or outside of said tracks, said door means comprising a main. door, an' intermediate door in said main door, said main door being provided with a pivoted member biased to underlie the swinging edge of said intermediate door when said intermediate dooris in closed position, said pivoted member being provided with a substantially arcuate bearing surface having its axis of curvature located approximately at the axis of pivotal mo vement of said member, said member being provided with a. receptacle forthe ready insertion of an operating member.
5. In a railway dump car in combination, a car body and swinging door means for selectively directing lading from, said car body either between the tracks upon which the car is mounted or outside of said tracks, said door means comprising a main door, an intermediate door in said main door, said main door being provided with a pivoted member biased to underlie the swinging edge of said til) intermediate door when said intermediate door is in closed position, said main door and said pivoted member being provided with cooperating abutment means for limiting movement of said pivoted member to a position in which the swinging edge of said intermediate door will engage said pivoted means in the closing movement of said intermediate door.
6. A railway dump car, comprising a body portion, a swinging door adapted to direct lading from said body portion to aregion intermediate the tracks upon which the said car is mounted, said first mentioned door bong provided with an intermediate door for directing lading to a region outside of tracks on which said car is mounted, means rigidly connected to said first mentioned door providing a bearing for swinging movement of said door, and a pivoted latch member carried by said rigidly connected means for latching said intermediate door.
7. A railway dump car, comprising abody portion, a swinging door adapted to direct lading from said body portion to a region intermediate the tracks upon, which the said car mounted, said first mentioned door being provided with an intermediate door for directing lading to a region outside of tracks on which said car is mounted, means rigidly connected to said first mentioned door providing a bearing for swinging movement of said door, and a pivoted latch member earried by said rigidly connected means for latching said intermediate door, said latch member and said rigidly connected means having cooperating abutting portions for limiting movement of said latch member relative to said rigidly connected member to a position in which said intermediate door will engage said latch member in the closing movement of said intermediate door.
8. A railway dump car, comprising a body portion, a swinging door adapted to direct lading from said body portion .to a region intermediate the tracks upon Which the said car is mounted, said first mentioned door being provided with an intermediate door for directing lading to a region outside of tracks on Which said car is inounted means rigidly connected to said first mentioned door providing a bearing for swinging movement of said door, and a pivoted latch member carried by said rigidly connected means for latching said intermediate door, said latch member and said rigidly connected means having cooperating abut-ting portions for limiting movement of said latch member relative to said rigidly connected member to a .position in Which said intermediate door will engage said latch member in the closing movement of said intermediate door, said body, aswinging door mechanism comprising a maindoor, an angular hinge member for said main door having an arm rigidly connected to the door, an intermediate door hinged Within said main door, a latch member pivoted to an arm of the angular hinge member, said latch member underlying the swlnging edge of said intermediate door when-the door is in closed position.
