  • This invention relates to direction indi- .cators particularly designed ror use on motor vehicles, and an object of, the invention is to provide a direction indicator which is simple in construction, easily operated and which co-operates with the spot-light or cowl lights of a motor vehicle, utilizing the background of the light or lamp in the day time to render the signal visible and the light rays from the lamp 'at night to render the signal readily visible.

Be it known that I, FRANK Smoius'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coopersburg, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Direction Indicators, of which the following is a specifica tion.
'- lights This invention relates to direction indi- .cators particularly designed ror use on motor vehicles, and an object of, the invention is to provide a direction indicator which is simple in construction, easily operated and which co-operates with the spot-light or cowl lights of a motor vehicle, utilizing the background of the light or lamp in the day time to render the signal visible and the light rays from the lamp 'at night to render the signal readily visible.
Another object of this invention is to provide a direction indicator as specified which may be readily and quickly attached to spotof existing construction without requiring alterations to the spot-light, and one which may be quickly and easily operated to clearly set forth the direction about to be taken by the vehicle equipped with the device and thereby acquainting approaching motorlsts of the intentions of the driverof the vehicle equipped with the indicator and consequently avolding serious accidents or collision, and also permitting the acquainting of pedestrians or trafiic policemen of the 'ldirpction'to be taken by the equipped vetion.

Referring more particularlyto the drawings, the improved direction indicator com-- prises an attaching structure 1 which. includes a circle attaching band or ring 2. The band orring 2 has suitable angled clips 3 attached thereto or formed thereon at Other objects of the invention will appear 7 over the rear; portion l of a spot-light 5 of any approved construction. One of the clips has aset-screw Gadjustably carried thereby for clamping engagement with the back 4 of the spot-light to securely"- hold the taehing structure in place. Abraclret is attached to the attaching ring 2 and a hearing structure 8 is carried by the bracket i and forms a support 4 for the shaft 9. The shaft 9 has a head 10 on its inner end which is transversely drilled to receive'the end of the rod 11 therethrough and asetscrew 13 is provided for-adjustably connecting the red to the head 10. The rod 11 is substantially U-shaped in plan and it extends across the back and side of the spot-light 5 as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. The front end 14 of the rod 11. is flattened and a direction indicating arrow 15 is riveted or otherwise suitably attached thereto. As

the arrow 15 extends across the front of the light orlump 5 so that in the day time the lens and the reflector of the light will serve as a background to increase the visibility of the arrow and at night the light rays from the lamp will serve as a background for increasing the visibility of the arrow. The 35 shaft 9 has a thumb-button 1'7 thereon by means of which the shaft may be rotated for moving the rod. 11 and consequently moving the arrow either into a vertical position or into a horizontal position with the head 18 of thearrow pointing either to the right or to the left to indicate the direction to be taken by the vehicle equipped with the spot-light.
Owing to the fact that the travel of the vehicle and the construction therewith which cause the rod 11to fall into a horizontal position when it is moved into a vertical osition to indicate that the vehicle is gomg straight ahead and to prevent such acci dental falling movement, a spring plate 18 is supported from the bracket 7 and it has a transversely extending notched upper end 19 which notch receives the rod 11 and holds it in its upright position and holds the arrow 15 in its upright or vertical position. The bracket 7 is positioned so as to form a support or abutment against which the rod 11 engages for holding the arrow 15 in horizontal position.
\Vhile in the drawings and in the for going description the direction indicator has been illustrated and described as applied to a spot-light of any approved type, such as used on motor vehicles, it is to be understood that the indicator may be arranged for use in connection with cowl tail or even headlights, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do notdesire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. The combination with a spot-light for a vehicle, of a direction indicator comprising an attaching structure for detachable'engagementwith the spot-light, an arrow carrying rod supported from said bracket and extending partially about the spot-light, and an arrow carried by said rod and movable in frontof the lens of the light, and a thumbbutton connected to said rod for moving the rod and arrow.
2. The combination with a spot-light for a vehicle, of ,a direction indicator comprising an attaching structure for detachable engagen'ient with the spot-light, an arrow carrying rod supported'from said bracket and extending partially about the spot-light, an
arrow carried by said rod and movable in front of the lens of the light, a tlnnnb-butlon connected to said .rod tor moving the rod and-arrow, and means for holding said arrow in certain adjusted positions.
3. The combination with a spot-light for a vehicle, of a direction indicator comprising an attaching structure for detachable en'- gagement with the spot-light, an arrow carrying rod supported from said bracket and extending partially about the spot-light, an arrow carried by said rod and movable in front of the lens of the light, a shaftbracket carried by said attaching structure, a shaft iockably carried by said bracket and connected to said rod for moving the rod in an are about the center of the shaft as an axis.
4. The combination with a spot-light for a vehicle, ofi fa direction indicator comprising an attaching structure for detachable engagement with the spot-ligl 1t,'an arrow carrying nod supported from said bracket and extending partially about the spot-light, an arrow carried by said rod and movable in front of the lens of the light, a shaft bracket carried by said attaching structure, a shaft rockably carried by said bracket and connected to said rod for moving the rod in an are about the center of the shaft as an axis, said bracket adapted to engage said rod to limit the movement of the rod, and means carried by said bracket for holding the rod and arrow in vertical positions.
