To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josmn A. Dnwnr, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Oakland, vcountyof Alameda, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Davenport, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a davenport, that is, ,a structure combined with a bed frame thatemay be folded to form with said structure a settee or unfoldedto form the equivalent .of a regular bedstead.

Davenports as usually constructed, in- .clude large-and substantial side framesat the opposite ends of the structure. These side members or frames, although adding to the appearance and comfort of the davenport while the latter is used asa seat, form-.1111- vdesirable side obstructions when the davenport .is..in use as aibed. It .is .one ofthe objects of my invention, therefore, to provide a davenport which will have largeside .members when the davenport is used as a seat, but when formed into a bed the obstructing portions .ofsaid members will be automatically removed and besides serve a useful function.

Another object of the invention is to provide a davenport which. affords the use of a full-sized double bed, :but which'uevertheless may .be .moved through aniordinary sized doorway without requiring the davenport to be taken apart inany way.

A furtherobject isto provide a .davenport in. which the entire -front portion of the supporting frame or box is made of solid material.

The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, someiof which,with .the foregoing, will be set forth in the ,fol-

lowing description of then preferred form of my invention which ,is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that I do not limit .myself to .the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations .of the preferred form within thescopeflof my'invention as set forth in the claims.

The davenport of my invention as illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings comprises a supporting frame 4 having a back 5, front plate 6, and side members 7. Arranged in the supporting frame is a foldable bed frame 8 formed of a plurality of sections 9, 10, 11 and 12 WlllCllal'G pivotally connected together. Sections 10, 11 and 12 will be referred to as'head, intermediate, and foot sections, respectively. The sections are preferably provided with-side rails 13 across which is stretched a fabric spring 14. One of the sections which shall hereafter be referred to as the head section 10 is secured to the sides 7 by means of parallel links 16 which serve to .hold the section horizontally disposed in its variousfpositions. When the 'davenport is in use as a seat, the section 10 is'in a lowered position and rests on a support'ili, whereas when the davenport is in use as a bed, the section 10 is in an elevated position and aligned with the other sections. The adjacent ends of the rails of adjoining sections are preferably so constructed that when the bed frame is folded the adjoining sections will be disposed at right angles, while in the extended position of the bed frame, the sections will be held in .horizontalalignment. As shown in Figure 2 when the bed frame is folded the sections 9 and '11, which are of the same length, are opposite and parallel to each other, and the section 12, which I term the foot section, is parallel to and overlies the head section 10, a stop 15, being preferably provided on the sides 7 to support the sec- .tion adjacent itsouter end when so disposed.

It will be noted that the bed frame when folded, lies considerably elevated from the floor, thus insuring sanitary conditions.

Means are provided for causing the head section to move upwardly and forwardly when the bed frame is extended. Fixed to the intermediate section 11 which connects the head and foot sections is an arm 21 which extends longitudinally of section 11 and is provided on its outer end with a roller 22 which is arranged to tlt vel in a vertical guideway 23 provided on the inner side of member 7. With the roller thus 'disposed in the guideway, the unfolding movement of the bed frame, particularly the section 11, will serve to elevate the head section and place it in horizontal alignment with the others. By means of a link 24 connected'to the side members 7 and section 9 the latter is caused to automatically move from vertical to horizontal position or vice Versa when the head section 10 is respectively moved from elevated to depressed position or from depressed to elevated position.

It will be noted by referring to Figure 2, that the bed frame when folded lies rearwardly of the vertically disposed front plate 6 and below the top 26 thereof. However, it will also be noted by referring to Figure 1, that the bed frame is arranged when extended to lie over said plate but in a horizontal plane below the top of the plate as positioned when the frame is folded. Means are therefore provided for causing the plate to be automatically moved to such position as will prevent its interference with the proper positioning of the bed frame when'the latter is moved to extended position. In the present embodiment of the invention the foregoing is effected by hinging the plate adjacent its lower edge for movement about a horizontal axis, and by connecting the plate to the section 10, the latter connection being preferably of fected by means of a link 28. It will thus be evident that as the bed frame is extended and the head frame is moved accordingly, the plate will be swung outwardly and downwardly and will not interfere with the movement and positioning of the latter, and on the other hand when the bed frame is returned to its folded position the plate will be returned to'its vertical position.

As hereinbefore stated, the present invention provides means whereby the davenport will have complete and substantial appearing side members when the davenport 1s 1n position as a seat, but when the davenport is 1n position as a bed such portions of the said members as would obstruct the sides of the bed frame are removed therefrom. The said obstructing portions of the side members usually include the arms 29 and the portion 30 adjacent and below the arms. In accordance with my invention said obstructing portions are formed separate of the side members and are attached to the foot section 12 of the bed frame. In this manner when the bed frame is folded said portions will appear as a part of the side members, whereas when said frame-is extended, said portions will be en tirely removed from the side members and will be positioned under the foot frame, said portions incidentally forming legs for the frame when so positioned. It will now be clear that when the mattress and bed clothes (not shown) are on the extended bed frame, the sides of the bed will befor the most part unobstructed, and that the foregoing advantage is accomplished without sacrificing the appearance of the daven-' port when used as a seat.

Also fixed to the foot section 12 is the seat frame 31 which is hinged to the outer extremity thereof. By being thus mounted the seat frame will swing downwardly below the fabric spring when the bed frame is extended, thereby preventing the seat frame from interfering with the functioning of the spring. Extending across the top of the davenport at the back, is a top plate 30 which is hinged at the rear end so that it may be swung backward over the back 5 if desired.

In order that the weight of the foldable bed frame will not impair the case of of operation thereof, a counter-balancing spring 33 is preferably secured at its opposite ends to the side members 7 and an arm 34L fixed to the section 10. The sections 10 and 11 are provided withpivotally mounted cross bars 35 and 36 which serve to resist inward displacement of the side rails.

In Figure 4 is shown a slightly modified form of the invention. In this embodiment the back member 40 and side members 41 extend upwardly to about the height of the seat. In this manner when the bed frame is extended and the mattress arranged thereon, no obstruction whatever will appear at the sides.

I claim:

1. In a davenport, a supporting frame, a foldable bed frame comprising a head section pivotally attached to said supporting frame for simultaneous movement vertically and horizontally, a second section pivoted to the first, a substantially vertical guideway arranged on said supporting frame, and an arm extending longitudinally from said second member and provided with a roller at its outer end arranged to travel in said guideway from one" end to the other when said bed frame is changed from folded to extended position and vice versa.
