Be it known that LHARLEY O. MoUL'roN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Maplewood, county of St. Louis, tate of Missouri, have invented an Improvement in Blindstitch-Sewing Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts. This invention relates to improvements in blind stitchsewing machines for sewing the edge portion. of a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material by a series of blind stitches in both the base and superimposed layers and the general object thereof is to provide means for insuring accuracy and uniformity of the stitches in the superimposed layer.
Av further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism which will enable uniformity of stitching in a superimposed layer of very fine or sheer material.

More particularly the invention relates to improvements in blind stitch sewingmachines for felling a superimposed layer of material upon a base layer comprising aneedle reciproca-ble in the general direction of the line of feedwith guiding means, preferably carried by the presser foot, for directling the upturned edge portion of the superimposed layer into the path of the needle, with 'a gauge also preferably carried by the presser foot located in proximity to the needie path and preferably embracing the edge 'Y of the superimposed layerat-the stitching point and yieldable to thepassageof the needle and the material of thesuperimposed layer which is caught bythe needle upon its penetrating stroke. f v

The adjustable presser foot desirably also provided With an adjustable and dA tachable guide for directing the superin posed laver towardv the stitching point, tlA detachability of the guide permitting sul stitution of suchl guidelv as may be suitable for the workwhich is operated upon.
Inithe preferredembodiment ofthe invent-ion illustrated in the accompanying drawings the presser foot 6- is provided with a pair of ears 17 and' 18 which are secured respectively by suitable screws 19 and 20 to the hook-bracket 5, the'heel of the presser foot extending beneath the hook bracket as illustrated in Fig. 1. The presser foot comprises a forwardly extending toe 21 which pro-jects from the outside of the presser foot and the under side ofthe toe 21 is provided with a channel 22 (see Fig. 4) forming a guideway for one feed dog. A shoe 23.7ex* tending rearwardly from the presser foot, engages the outer side of the other feed dog and acts in conjunction with the under Jface 24 of the heel of the presser foot and with the wall of the guideway 22 to strip the goods from the ieed dog when they are raised before being advance-d to work engaging position.
The usual needle plate 25, which is securedv te or formed'integral with the under 'side of the presser foot, extends laterally across the line of stitching and has a curved upper surface 26 extending to the needle 'throat 27 and corresponding to the are` of reciprocation of the needle. rlhe heel portion oi" the presser foot has a curved surface 28 also corresponding substantially to the curvature of the needle which serves to support the needle after its passage through the work and thereby p-revent its deflection. The inner edge of the needle plate is provided with an upwardly extending flange 29 which serves as a. guide for the side of the needle in the stroke in which it penetrates the superiumosed layer as is usual in blind stitch sewing machines of this type. A member 3() is secured to the upper face of the toe oft the presser foot and is provided with an upwardly extending arcuate guiding i'lauge 31 which merges into the plane of the inner edge ot the guide 29 and forms :in abutment against which the operato!` 'may guide the edge of the superimposed layer and cause the same to be turned upwardly as it approaches thestitching point.
The edge ot the superimposed layer which is thus turned up is engaged by the guide and byy the guiding audgauging means comfprising the embodiment of the present invention which direct the edge of said superimposed layer into the path Iof the needle as heretofore described.
lIn the preferred embodiment lof the inventioul disclosed herein the guide and vgauge are mounted upon t-he minor toe of the presser foot.. In the present .embodiiuentof the invention the minor toe ofthe 'presser 'foot is adjustably mounted upon a `toe-supporting member which issecured to one of the .ears of .the presserfoot, As
illustrated the toe-supporting member is in: the tormI of a substantially rectangular' block 32 which is secured to theV ear ofthe presser foot and to the'hook ybracket by the screw 19. It has a laterally projecting arm 33 provided with la rearwardly offset end portion having a slot 34 whichfis engaged by adog 35pivotallysecuredbyascrew 36 to the top of the body of the presser foot. rI'his dog so positioned as to lock. the presser foot supporting member in such pos-ition that the Work engaging face of the presser foot will be properly'located with respect to the surface of the superimposed layer.
The minor toe of the presser foot is inthe form of a shoe 37 having anupwardly curved front end 38 and a convexedly curved rearwardly' extending surfacel B9 com'erging toward the line of: stitching. T he shoe has a laterally extending arm40 provided with slots 41 which receive screws 42 which are seated in the presser foot supporting member or bloclr32. Byreason of this connection the minor toe ofthepresser toot may be adjusted towardand from the line of stitching. Ther curved converging under face of the presser foot engages the upper surface. of' the edge portion of .the
superimposed layer and acts to crowd the upturned edge of the superimposed layer toward the stitching point. f
'A guide 43, for the edge of the superimposed layer, is provided, this guide preferably being in the form of a plate having a doivnwardly curved endl portion 44 which embraces the edge portion'of the superimposed layer with the flat portion-'of the guide resting upon the top of the edge of the layer thereby limiting the height to which the edge is turned upwardly. The curved end portion 44 ot the guide serves to guide. the edge of the superimposed layer toward the path of the needle. 1 I
The guide plate 43A is provided withr a slot to receive a clamping screw 45by means of which itis adjuster-bly secured to the minor toe of the presser foot and is adapted to be adjusted relatively'to said minorv'toe and to the' needleA path. The other lend 4b of the guide 43 desirahly is of a reduced width and extends into a slot in the laterally extending arm 40 of the minor toe.
This guide can be detached by remov- 'ing the screw45 and other guides substituted ltherefor according to the character of the material of' which the superimposed layer is formed7 or for producing Wider stitches in the superimposed layer, that is to say stitches which lare located at a greater distance from the edge of the superimposed layer.v An illustrative substitute guide-47, adapted'to produce a wider seam of this character, is illustrated in Fig. 8.
This guide obviously may alone be used to the gauge -toward direct the edge of the superimposed layer into the path of the needle and the adjustabi-lity of this guide together with the adjustability of lthe minor toe of the presser toot, which serves to crowd the edge of the superimposed layer toward the needle path, provides means for properly guiding various different thicknesses and characters of the material of the superimposed layer into thepath of the needle. y
Vhile the presser' feet of blind stitch sewing machines have heretofore been provided with guides somewhat similarly located, so far as I am aware no presser foot has heretofore been provided with a minor toe portion which is adjustable toward and from the .line ot' stitching, or with an adjustable and detachable .guide mounted upon an adjustable minor toe po-rtion of the presser foot. rlhe present construction enables a lgreater variety ot superimposed layer material to be properly presented to the stitch forming mechanism than in other constructions heretofore produced.
ln addition to the novel guiding means for the superimposed layer the present invention .comprehends the additional means for insuring runiformity and accuracy of stitching in the superimposed layer above generally described.
In the particular embodiment of the invention herein this mechanism is in the form of a gauge comprising a resilient plate 48 'ot general L-shape form having a shank 4:9 provided with a slot 50 which receives a clamping screw 51 which is seated in the under surface of the presser foot supporting block 32 (see Fig. 'l). The gauge is provided with a central upwardly curved portion 52 which increases its resilience and a downwardly curved end portion 53 positioned to embrace the edge of the superimposed layer at the stitching point. The end portion of the gauge 49 desirably lies in such close proximity to the needle path that the point of a centrally pointed needle may pass through the gauge adjacent its downwardly curved end, but the resilient gauge will be raised by the body portion ot the needle and the 'material which is caught by the needle during its penetrating Stroke.
By Areason ot' this construction exceeding accuracy and uniformity of penetration ot the needle in the superimposed layer and the length of the stitch therein is attained and skipping of stitches by the needle is obviously avoided.
The gauge may be adjusted for dierent thicknesses or character of material by loosening the screw 51 and sliding the shank of or from the path of the axis of the needle as may be required.
n order to insure accuracy of the penetration. of the needle in the base layer an abutment is Iprovided for limiting the upward movement of the bender 11 in such a manner that a predetermined depth of stitching will be made in the base la-yer irrespective of the goods of rsaid base layer. As 'illustrated herein a stop or abutment is provided which is of L-shaped form,the vertical arm 54e having a tlat under surface to engage the base layerimmediately -above the axis of the benderlfwhilethe laterally extending arm 55 is provided `with an enlarged end 56 which is pivotally mounted upon the screw 20 by which the ear 18 of the presser foot is secured to the hookbracket 5. An adjusting screw 57 having a slotted top passes through thearm 55 of the L-shaped stop member and is seated in the major toe portion 2l ot the presser toot. -A'suitable spring acts normallygto raise the, abutmentor stop 5a. As illustrated'herein the spring is of L-shaped form comprising a hor-iZontalportion-S having a down-turned end which rests upon the top ot the major toe portion of the presser foot and a verticalportionv 59 which is secured by a screw .60 tothe horizontal arm 55 of the abutment member. The vertical portion 59 of the spring is provided with laterally extending wings l'which engage the knurled periphery of the adjusting screw 57. The spring 58, therefore, holds the arm 55 of the abutment pressed upwardly against the under tace of the set screw and by adjusting the setscrew the position of the lower end Aof the stop or abutment can be accurately positioned to limit the upward movement of the lower bender.
l lt will be understood that the embodiment of the. invention disclosed herein is illustrative in character land is not restrictivo and that various modifications in form, construction and arrangement of parts may be lmade within the scope of the invention.
It will also be understood that the invention .may be applied to other types ot presser foot-'0r embodied in other blind stitch sewing machine constructions within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
Having .thus described the invention, what isclaimed as new, and desired to be secured by :Letters Patent, is:

A blind stitch sewing machine for sewing the edge portion of a superimposed .layer upon a base layer of material comprising a needle reciprocable in the general direction of the line o f feed and a resilient gauge having mean's'to embracethe edge portion of the superimposed layer at the stitching point and yieldable vto theI passage'of the needle superimposed layer at the stitching point and yieldableitolthepassage of the needle and the material'of'the superimposed layer caught' by the lneedle :during its penetrating stroke and means for adjust-ing said guage transversely relatively to the needle path.
5. A blind stitchfsewing machine for sewing the edge portion of a superimposed layer upon a base layero'f material comprisinga needle reciprocable in the general direction of the line of feed, a presser foot having a major toe portionto engage the base layer and a minor toe portion rigidly secured to said presser foot and provided with a convexedlyl curved i ksurface converging rear- Wardly toward the needle path to engage the upturned edge vof the superimposed layer and a resilient gauge mounted upon said minor toe portion having means to embrace the edgevoffhe superimposed layer at the stitching point.

A blind stitch sewing machine for sewingthe edge portion of a superimposed layer upon a base layerl of material comprising a needle i'eeiprocable in the general direction of the line of feed, Vpresser foot having a major toe portion to engage the base layer and a lminor toe portion rigidly 'secured to saidv resser footand provided with a cony curved surface converging rearwardly toivard theeneedle path to engage the tupturned edge of the superimposed layer, a resilient gauge mounted upon said minor toe portion having means to embrace the edge of the superimposed layer at the stitching point and means for adjusting the minor toe transversely relatively to the needle path.
7. A blind stitch sewing machine for sewing the edge portion of a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a needle reeiprocable in the general direction of the line of feed, a presser foot having a major toe portion to engage the base layer and a minor 'toe portion rigidly secured to said presser-'foot and provided with a convexedly curved surface converging rearwardly toward the needle path to engage the upturned edge of the superimposed layer, a resilient gauge mounted upon said minor toe poit-ion having means to embrace the edge of the superimposed layer at the stitching point7 means y minor toe transversely relatively to the needle path and means for adjusting said resilient gauge upon said minor toe relatively to the needle path,

A. blind stitch sewing machine for sewing the edge portion of a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a needle reciprocable in the general direction of the line of feed, a presser foot having a major toe to ei'igage. the base layer and a minor toe rigidly secured to said presser foot and provided with a convexedly curved surface converging rearwardly toward the needle path to engage the upturned edge of the superimposed layer7 means adjustably securing said minor toe to said presser foot to permit said minor toe to be adjusted transversely relatively to the needle path, an. edge guide for the superimposed layer comprising a resilient. plate adjustably securedto said minor toe and having a curved end to embrace the upturned edge of the superimposed layer.
