R. HERVIG DRILL STRAIGHTENING DEVICE Filed Ja. n. 11, 1921 I a Q mama AUDRIEYS Patented Get. 6, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD I'IERVIG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN' CAR AND FOUN- DRY COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
DRILL-STRAIGHTENING DEVICE.
Application filed January 11, 1921. Serial No. 436,506.
T all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, RICHARD Hnnvlo, residing at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Drill-Straightening Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to ,the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof within the scope of the claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device,
Fig. 2 is an end elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
It is the object of my invention to provide an improved device for straightening drills and similar objects and my improved device comprises a base member 1 having, integral therewith, a portion 2 projecting upwardly from one edge of the base and terminating in the cylindrical sleeve portion 3. A reenforcing rib 4 is joined to the upwardly projecting portion 2 and the cylindrical sleeve 3 and aids in securing the sleeve 3 to the base and lugs 5 projecting from the base are provided with bolt openings 6 for use in attaching the device to a suitable support. Integral with the base and on the side of the base opposite to the member 2 is a cylindrical sleeve portion 7, the sleeve 7 being arranged so that the axis of its opening is perpendicular to the axis of the opening of sleeve 3. The base 1 is also provided with a finished surface 8 upon which are placed V-blocks 9 adapted to receive the drills and a finished face 10 to which the bracket shelf 11 is attached by the bolts 12, the surface 8 and the shelf 11 lying in planes that are parallel to each other and to the axis of the opening in the sleeve 7.
Mounted in the sleeve 3 so as to slide therein but keyed thereto so as to be incapable of rotation is a cylindrical stem 13 having a rectangular head 14 provided with a screw threaded opening in which is mounted the screw 15 having a head 16 carrying the handle 17 and a hardened flat end 18, the stem 13 and screw 15 being positioned so that the axis of the screw 15 is perpendicular to the plane of the finished surface 8. Secured to the end of the stem 13 by the screw 19 is a stop plate 20 Which has mounted therein an adjustable set screw 21 which engages the outer face of the sleeve 3 and is held in adjusted position by the lock nut 22.
Rotatably mounted in the sleeve 7 is a sleeve bushing 23, the rotation of the bushing 23 in the sleeve 7 being limited by a stop screw 24 mounted in the bushing 23 and having its headtravel in a slot 25 in the sleeve 7. Fitted into openings 26 in the sleeve bushing 23 are the pins 27 which have reduced ends projecting into the central opening of the bushing 23 so as to engage in the keyway 28 of a pivot shaft 29 that is fitted to slide in the bushing 23. At one end of the shaft 29 there is mounted a center bracket 30 carrying the center 31. The center bracket 30 is fitted to slide on the shaft 29 but is kept from rotating thereon by the key 32 and is held in adjusted position on the shaft by the hand screw 33. At the other end of the shaft 29 a pin 34 secures a center bracket 35 having an opening 36 in which the spindle 37 which carries the center 38 is mounted to reciprocate. 'A spring 39 surrounding the reduced end 40 and confined between the spindle 37 and the bottom of the opening 36 serves to urge the spindle 37 and center 38 forward so as to hold the work 41 (shown in dotted lines) on the centers 31 and 38. The reduced end 40 of the spindle 37 projects through an opening in the bracket 35 and its outer end has pinned thereto a collar 42 engaged by the forked end 43 of the bell-crank shift lever 44 pivotally mounted on the pin 45 passed through openings in the lugs 46 formedon the bracket 35. A screw 47 engaging in a slot in the spindle 37 limits the retraction of the spindle and the compres sion of the spring 39.
' Operation of the shift lever 44 retracts the spindle 37 and center 38 permitting the work 41 to be readily inserted between the centers 31 and 38. With the work carried on the centers, the shaft 29 may be moved in the bushing 23 so as to bring the different parts of the work 41 in position to be rotated before the indicator 48 placed upon the bracket shelf 11. When the indicator shows that straightening is needed, the shaft 29 and bushing 23 are rotated in the sleeve 7 to bring the work 41 into position on the V- blocks 9. To permit of this, the stem 13 is moved backward in the sleeve 3 so that the screw 15 will not be engaged as the work is moved to the V-blocks. After the work is positioned on the f-blocks, the stem 13 is moved in the sleeve 3 to bring the screw 15 forward until it is over the work, screw 21 being adjusted to stop the screw 15 in the desired position. Screw 15 is then rotated by the handle 17 to bring pressure to bear upon the work 41, after which the screw 15 and stem 13 are moved backward and the shaft 29 and bushing 23 are rotated in the sleeve 7 to bring the work into position before the indicator 48, the engagement of the screw 24 with the end of the slot 25 serving to position the workwith respect to the indicator 48.
What I claim is:
1. In a work straightening device, a work holding device adapted to support the work for rotation about the axis of the work and to rotate the work about an axis offset from the axis of the work, and means adapted to exert pressure on the work, said pressure means being bodily movable to permit rot'ation of said work holding device and work.
2. In a work straightening device, a rotatable work holding device and indicator, means for supporting said indicator, and means for exerting pressure upon the work, said Work holding device being adapted to be rotated from the position in which it presents the Work to the indicator to the position in which it presents the work to the pressure means.
In a work straightening device, a base, a support slidably mounted in said base, an adjustable stop for positioning said support, a pressure means carried by said support, and a pivoted work holding device adapted to position the work on said base for said pressure means, said work holding device being movable to present diiferent parts of the work to said pressuremeans.
4. In a Work straightening device, a base, a sleeve carried by said base, a work support rotatably mounted in said sleeve, and a pressure means adapted'to operate on said work said pressure means being bodily movable to permit the placing of said work by said work support.

S). In a work straightening device, pressure means, an indicator,'means for support ing said indicator, and work supporting means adapted to present the work to the indicator in one position and to be r-ot ated to present the Work to the pressure means in another position.
10. In a work straightening device, abase, pressure means carried by said base, and a work supporting device pivotally mounted on said base, said pressure means being bodily movable to permit of the work supporting means positioning the work on said base.
