Description

Oct. 6, 1925- c. c. HARRIS CHOKE VALVE Filed July 1921 cut out Patented Oct. 6, 1925.
UNITED STATES CHRISTOPHER G. HARRIS, OI
CHOKE Application filed Jul 5,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER C. HAR- are, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowling Green, in the county of Warren and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Choke Valve, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oil well drilling apparatus, and more particularly to novel means for trapping the initial flow of oil and gas when the well is being drilled.
The primary objectof the invention is to provide a device of this character which will surround the drill cable, and close the pipe in which the same moves, to cause the oil and gas to be directed laterally therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily brought into operation to accomplish the shutting off of the oil and g With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of What is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:-
Figure 1 is a side elevational view disclosing a device constructed in accordancewith the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2. i
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the casing or well tubing which is used in the drilling of a well, the drill cable 6 being shown as operating therethrough.
The casing 5 is provided with an enlarged portion 7 in which operate the sliding valve members 8, that have offset end portions 9 adapted to cooperate to provide a fluid-tight connection between the sections of the valve.
Each of these sections if provided with a ortion 10 to provide a clearance for the drilFcable 6, and as shown, an operating rod 11 has connection with each section, by means of which rods the valve sections may be moved to close the opening or casing through which the cable operates.

VALVE.
1921. sci-m1 1%. 482,407.
A support 12 is provided in connection with the apparatus and to this support is secured a bracket 13 that provides a pivotal support for the arm 14 that has one end thereof connected to one of the operating rods of one of the valve sections, the opposite end of the arm 14 extending upwardly above the bracket 13 where the same has pivotal connection with the rod 15, which rod also has connection with the lever 16. This lever 16 also has connection with one of the valve sections as through the operating rod which connects thereto. From the foregoing it will be seen that as the lever 16 is moved to a position as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1 of the drawing, the valve sections are brought together to close the casing 5 and prevent fluid and gas from passing upwardly therethrough, and when the valve sections are moved in the opposite directions, the sections are moved to open the valve casing to permit of the drilling operation.
A discharge pipe indicated at 17 is in communication with the casing 5, the passage of fluid and gas through the pipe 17 being controlled by the valve member 18. The pipe 17 discharges into a suitable tank not shown, which may be positioned under the discharge end of the pipe.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when oil is encountered during the drilling of a well the lever 16 is immediately operated to close the casing 5, to cut oil the passage of fluid through the casing, thereby directing the fluid through the discharge pipe 17 where the same is trapped in a suittable receiving tank or reservoir.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A well drilling apparatus comprising a casing embodying separable solid sections, said sections having threaded openings to receive the ends of pipes, said sections being cut away throughout portions of their lengths and throughout portions of their adjacent faces, sliding valve members movable within the cut out portions of the sections, said valve members having ofiset end portions adapted to overlap to provide a tight connection, and the ad'acent ed es of the offset end portions being ormed o semicircular openings adapted to-register to accommodate a well cable.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixedi'in'y-si ature.
