Be it known that I, RICHARD Lie-sane WiL- COX, a citizen 'of the United States, residing at Waterbury in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Die- Separating Meana of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompai'iying drawings.
My invention relates to die separating means, its principal object being to provide simple mechanism for separating the dies of an open dieheader or upsetting machine.
Among other aims and objects of my invention may be recited the 'provision of a Clevice of the character `mentioned with a view to compactness and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and efficiency of operation high.
The improvements in 'the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the description hereinafter contained, and wherein an embodiment of the invention is disclosed for'the purpose of im? `artin'g a full understanding of 'the same. 4laving more particular reference fto the drawings and in connection with which like reference characters lrefer "to corresponding parts in theseveralffgures;

All of the mechanism above described is of a well known form and operates in an equally well known manner and. therefore needs no 'further description herein.
The means for actuating the dies is not shown herein for the above reason, but the same travel between the wire feed line and the upsetting line, which latter line is designated x-m in Figure 1. From the wire feed line to the upsetting line the dies are positively actuated by relatively powerful mechanism to cut olf a piece of the wire rod but are usually returned from the upsetting line by spring mechanism. i As shown the dies are held against endwise movement in the supporting means by the plates 16 and 17, this being only one of thevmany ways by which the same result may be accomplished.
vPivotally mounted within the cover 15 upon the stud 18 are one or more levers 19 upon each of which is a lug 2O which rests within the V groove of the dies when the same are near or at vthe wire feed line.
The necessary grooves are formed in the'underside of the cover 15 to permit free movement of the levers 19.
Movable within the cover' 15 are plungers 21, corresponding in number with the levers 19, and each of which is surrounded by a coil spring 22 within the bore 23. These plungers are` limited in their downward movement by the nuts 24 threaded in the shank thereof, thus providing means to vary the relative position of the plungers and the tension of the springs 22.
Then the dies are at or near the wire feed line, the lug 2O on the lever 19 is-in the V groove formed by two of the faces ofthe dies and held therein by the spring plunger 21. As the dies travel from the wire feed line tothe upsetting line, the lever 19 is moved upon its pivot mounting against the tensionl of the springs 22 by the die 11, thus permitting the latter to pass thereunder.
During the return movement, as the dies approach the wire feed line, the lug 2O is moved downwardly into the V groove formed between the dies by the spring plunger 22, which action separates the dies, sufficiently to permit the wire topass therebetween.
Thusmy improved die separating mechanism requires only a minimum amount lof space, is composed of few parts, and in these and other ways objections tothe mechanism heretofore commonly utilized for this pur-- pose are eliminated and many obvious advantages secured.
`I have shown in Figures 1 and 2 my improved mechanism as applied to the top side of the die, but obviously it `will operate equally as Well if applied to the yunderside thereof, asshown in Figures 3 and 4, the numerical designations 19", 20, 21, 23a and 25a therein corresponding with the above mentioned parts and structures designated 19, 20, 21, 23 and 25, or if desired, it may be used upon both top and bottom.
There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention, aside from thoseherein suggested, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of the ap'- pended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by -Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with dies of a heading machine or the like; of means for opening the dies wherein each of the dies has a face thereon that co-operates with a similar face upon another die to form a groove when the dies are in operative relation to each other, comprising in part a lever, and means for applying pressure to said dies through said lever to separate the dies when substantially in register with the wire feed line.
2. In combination with the dies of a hea-ding machine or the like; of means for opening the dies wherein each of the dies has a face thereon that co-operates with a similar face upon another die to form a groove and comprising in part a yi-eldingly actuated lever and means for applying pressure to the dies through the lever to separate the dies when substantially in register with the wire feed line. f

In combination with thedie-s of a heading machine or the like; of means for opening the dies wherein each of the dies has a face thereon that co-operates with a similar face upon another die to form a groove when the dies are inoperative relation to each other, comprising a .lever having a part thereon that projects into said groove when the dies are approximately at the wire feed line; and yielding means engaging said lever, the mounting of said lever being upon one side of the wire feed line.
5. In combination with the dies of a heading machine or the like; of means for opening the dies wherein each of the dies has a face thereon that co-operates with asimilar face -upon yanother die to form a groove when the dies are in operative relation to each other, comprising a lever having a part thereon that projects into said groove when the dies are approximately at the wire feed line; and yielding means engaging said lever, the yielding means being upon one side of the wire feed line.
6. In combination with the dies of a heading machine or the like; of means for opening the dies wherein each of the dies has a face thereon that co-operates with a similar face upon another die to form a groove when th-e dies are in operative relation to each other, comprising a lever having a part thereon that projects into said groove when the dies are approximately at the wire feed line; and yielding means engaging said lever, the mounting of said lever being upon one side of the wire feed line and the yield ing means upon the other side thereof.
7. In combination with the dies of a heading machine or the like, wherein each die has a face thereon that cowoperates with a similar face upon another die to form a groove when the dies are in operative relation to each other; of means for supporting the dies; a recessed cap or cover therefor; means for separating the dies, comprising a lever mounted in a recess in the cap or cover and having a part thereon that projects into said groove when the dies are at the wire feed line.
8. In combination with the dies of a heading machine or the like, wherein each die has a face thereon that co-operates with a similar face upon another die to form a groove when the dies are in operative relation to each other; of means for supporting the same; a recessed cap or cover therefor; means for separating the dies, comprising a lever mounted in a recess in the cap or cov-er and, having a part thereon that projects into said groove when the dies are at the wire feed line; and yielding means connected with the cap or cover having contact with the lever.
9. In combination with the dies of a heading machine or the like, wherein each die has a face thereon that co-operates with a similar face upon another die to form a groove when the dies are in operative relation to each other; of means for supporting the same; a recessed cap or cover therefor; means for separating the dies, comprising a lever mounted in a recess in the cap or cover and having a part thereon that projects into said groove when the dies are at the wire feed line; yielding means connected with the cap or cover having contact with the lever; and a stop member for limiting the position of the yielding means.
10. In combination with the dies of a heading machine or the like, having corners which co-operate to form a groove when in operative relation to each other; of means for supporting the same; a recessed cap or cover therefor; means for separating said dies, comprising a lever mounted in a recess in the cap or cover applying pressure to a part within said groove,
