LOCK MECHANISM.

To all whom t may concern:
Bc it known that I, S'rnvn MIKE, a citizen of Hungary, residing at Velch, in the county of McDowell and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lock mechanisms and has for its primary object to provide an improved type of lock mechanism for a door. of any type for use in various connections.
Another object of the invention is to provide aV lock mechanism for doors embodying disk tumblers adapted to be operated from the outer side of the door for shifting a` restraining member for a sliding` latch bolt that in turn is key operated.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a lock mechanism of the type above set forth, means positioned upon the inner side of a door for `manually shifting the restraining member' for the sliding latch bolt while a. knob disk upon the inner side of the door permits shifting movement of the latch bolt after the bolt restraining member has been properly shifted. A still further object of the invention is to provide a manually operable device associated with the manually' shift-able mechanism for moving the restraining device to a position to permit operation of the slidinglatch bolt for holding the restraining device so positioned with the sliding latch bolt freely operable either by the key upon the outer side of the door or the knob disk upon thev inner side thereof. f Further objects of the invention include the designing of the lock mechanism to permit limited sliding movement of the latch bolt when the latter is normally restrained against sliding movement for the breaking and' making of electrical circuits, the circuit being broken having therein a lamp that is constantly illuminated and to be con vcniently located such as in a headquarters oiiice or a police station, the breaking of the circuit cutting out the light and the making of another circuit sounding an alarm to indicate unauthorized tampering with the lock mechanism. y
A still further object of the invention is to provide contact devices associated with Serial No. 679,679.
the keeper member for the sliding latch bolt wh-ich will operate to extinguish a light and sound analarm when the bolt keeper is being tampered with by an unauthorized person.
Viith the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

rlhe lock mechanism and signal apparatus is associated with a door 1 and frame 2,
it being understood that the door hereinafter re 'erred to may be provided in buildings, safes or in any other construction desii-cd, the lock casing generally designated 3 being carried by the door 1 while the keeper l for the sliding latch bolt of the lock mechanism is carried by the frame 2. The lock casing includes a bottom wall 5, end walls 6 and 7, side walls 8 that carry lateral flanges 9 to be fastened as at 10 to the inner face of the door 1 and a removable cover wall 11 suitably fastened in position as by scre\ or the like passing through the cover wall and entering the bottom wall 5.
'The cover plate 11 for the lock casing carries a key cylinder 12 extending through the door 1 as shown in Fig. t by dotted lines and the door 1 is further provided with a transverse opening `13 tor accommodate an operating shaft for tumbler disks foi-mine' a part of the lock mechanism.
As shown more clearly in Figs. 5 to 7 and lil, the bottom wall 5 of the lock casing carries a perpendicular forked bracket l-l between which the shank 15 of the sliding latch bolt is slidably mounted, the latch bolt 15 carrying the usual type of latch head 16 at its outer end and being surrounded between the forked bracket and latch head 1G by the coil spring 17 engaging the latch head at its outer end and in engagement with the plate 18 at its inner end that is slidably mounted upon the latch bolt shank, the plate 18 being moved into engagement with the forked bracket with the spring 17 tending to normally force the latch bolt in the projected positions'illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. The inner end of the'bolt shank 15 carries a cross arm-19 having an opening 2O therein laterally of the bolt shank with one end of the arm 19 bent at a forward inclination as at 21 with thev terminal end outwardly directed as at 22 to provide an abutment and .extending in parallelism with the arm 19. The abutment 22 carries a forwardly directed rod 23 bent downwardly at its forward end as at 24.,
the rod 23 being parallel 'with the bolt shank 15.
Tolimit the forwardly projecting movement of the latch bolt against the spring tension 17 thereon, and for manually retracting the latch bolt, there is provided a disk 25 positioned exteriorily of the bottom wall 5, being carried by a shank journaled in the bottom wall 5 and having fixed to the inner end thereof a double cam 2G both portions of which engage the inner face of the cross arm 19 carried by the latch bolt shank, one of the cams carrying a lug 27 directed toward the operating disk 25 for purposes presently to appear. The retracting movement of the sliding latch bolt is limited by a pair of bracket plates 28 shown more clearly in Fig. 5, the same being arranged parallel to each other and anchored at their forward ends as at 29 to the bottom wall of the lock casing, the brackets 28 being set up from the bottom wall 5 and carrying upwardly directed lugs 30 and 31 at their rear ends that are engaged by the cross arm 19 as shown in Fig. 7.
To retain the sliding latch bolt against retracting movement at its limit of projection, there is provided a member as shown in detail in Fig. 14 that includes a base plate 32 having upwardly bent ends 33 forming a member of substantially U-formation as illustrated and having an opening 34 in the bottom wall adjacent the rear end to accommodatea pivot pin 35 carried by the insulation plate 3G mounted upon the bottom wall A pin 37 is slidable through the end walls 33 and carries a relatively long projecting end 38, the rear end of the pin 37 positioned outwardly of the adjacent end wall 33 and being provided with an insulation head 39, a c oil spring 40 surrounding the pin 37 between the rear end wall 33 and a cross key 41 carried by the pin as; clearly illustrated,` the spring 440' projecting the pin end 88 to a position in proximity of thek cross arm 19 carried by the latch bolt.. The
l pin end 38 is normally positioned laterally of the opening 20 the cross arm 19jand in line with one end of said cross arm, the same being so positioned by the fiat spring 42 anchored at its rear end to the insulation plate 36. slightly in, rear of the pivot pin with the free forward endl thereof engaged in the bifurcated lug 43 depending from the base plate 3Q as shown in Figs. 5 to 7 and 14, the spring 42? normally shifting the member that restrains sliding movement ofy the latch bolt tothe position shown in Fig 5 with the forward end 3.81 of the pin positioned laterally of the arm opening 20, the arm engaging the pin end 38 and being pre vented from sliding movement.
One of the devices for shifting the plate member 32 and pin 38. to aline the latter with the opening 20? in the arm 19 for permitting sliding movement of the latch bolt shank 15 includes the two' members shown in detail in Figs., 15 and 16, the member illustrated in Fig. 15 embodying' a bottom plate 44 carrying perpendicular end walls 45 and 46 forming a member of substantially Ueformation, the end walls 45 and 46v being slotted to slidably receive the blade 47. The blade 47 is normally projected beyond the forward end wall by means of" Vthe rod 48 secured in the end walls 45 and 4G.- at one side of the blade 47 and being enclosed for a portion of its length by the coil spring 49V engaging at one end7 the end wall 46. and at its other end, the leg 50 of an angle bracket that is slidable upon the rod 48 with the. other leg' 51 of the angle bracket secured to the blade 47 between the walls 45 and 46. The bottom plate 44 of the member shown Fig. 15 is pivotally mounted as at 52y upon the bottom wall 5 of the lock casing laterally oi the cross arm 19 of the latch bolt and is normally influenced in adirection in its swinging movement toward said cross by the spring 58 anchored upon the post 54 within the lock casing with one end of the spring engaging the forward end wall 45 to; place the pivoted plate member 44 under tension in one direction. An angle. bracket including a mounting leg 55 is secured tothe blade 47 at the side thereof opposite the bracket mounting 51 and carries a leg extension 56 projecting rearwardly of' the abutment 22' carried by the` cross arm 19 as shown in Fig.` 5. Another angle arm 57 is secured toI the end wall 46 of the plate member 44 and carries a leg extension 58I projecting into the tensionedpath of movement of the. forward end wall 33 of the pivoted plate meinber- 32 for limiting swinging moves` ment oii the plate4 member 32? w-hentlie pin supporting the pivoted plate member 44` within the lock casing. i
To limit the spring pressed movements of the plate member 44 as influenced by the spring 53 and also for shifting the plate member 44 against the spring tension thereon to cause the leg',V 58 to engage the wall 33. of the pivoted plate member' 32 for shifting; the latter to ali-ne the pin 38 with the arm opening 20,l therey is provided a rectangular post or shank;` 66 projecting through a slotted opening 61 in the bottom wall 5 of the lock casing as clearly` shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 16", the post 60 carrying an operating disk head 62 upon the outer end thereof outwardly of the bottom wall 5 of the casing, the post 60 being positioned intermediate the sliding latch bolt 15 and they pivoted plate memberY 44. rlhe end of the post 60 within thelock casing carries an arm 63 projecting at right angles therefrom and the outergend of the arm 63 carries a right angularly projecting pin 64 extending in a direction toward the double cam plate 26 and in the path of movement of the depending lugV 27 carried by the cam, this relation of elements being illustrated in Fig. 5.. The side of the post 602 adjacent the pivoted platemember 44 isl notched as at 65 to receive the adjacent edge of said platea member that is slightly spaced from the bote tom wall 5 of the lock casing forming a cooperative guide between the two engaged members while a pin 66 projects from the` post; 66 ina direction opposite to; the-pin 64, `the pin 66 being disposed adjacent the bottom wall 5L ofthe lock casing. lt will therefore be seen that when the disk 62: is employed for shifting the post 60 through the slot 61,A the post 60 engaging the adjacent edge of the basey plate 44 wil-l move the latterupon its` pivotal mounting 52; against the tension of the spring 53 to the position shown in Fig.` 6, the movement of the post 60 disposing the pin 64 laterally of the lug 27 to permit operation of the double cam 26' through the medium of the disk 25:, the cam being shiftedto the position illustrated in Fig. 7 with one of the camsengaging the cross arm 19' of the latch bolt' for retracting the latch bolt against the tension of `the springV 17. lhen the base plate 44 is shifted' by the post 60, the leg 58 carried by the end wall 46 of the plate member 44 engages the forward end wall', 33 olf the plate member 32 for shifting; the latter upon its pivotal mounting 34 and` against tension of thel spring 42 for disposing the pin end 38 in alinement with the arm opening 2O to permit sliding retraction of the latch bolt.
The pivoted plate members 32 and 44 may be temporarily held in the positions illus*- trated in Fig.` 6 with the pin end 38 alined with the arm opening 2O by means of the arm 67 pivotally mounted at one end upon the post 68 carried by the bottom wall 5 of the casing, the pivoted arm 67 being under tension by the spring 69 engaging the outer side edge thereof as shown in Figs. 5 to 7 with the inner edge of the outer end of the free swinging end of the arm notched as at 7 0 to receive the outer terminal end of the blade 47 when the plate members 32 and 44 are shifted as described. The tension on the pivoted arm 67 and the plate 47 causes a constant wiping engagement between the two relatively movable engageable parts to insure proper reception of the outer end of the blade in the arm notch 70 and with the arm and blade so engaged, the bent end 24 of the rod 23 carried by the latch bolt arm 19 are substantially juxtaposed to effect a release of the holding means for the pivoted plate members 32 and 44 and their restoration to positions for retaining the sliding latch bolt against movement. With the parts positioned as illustrated in Fig. 6, the disk 25 is rotated to cause one of the cams 26 to engage the cross arm 19 to retract the latch bolt shank 15, the pin 64 being positioned laterally of the cam lug 27 while the abutment 22 is spaced from the bracket leg 56. The bolt may then be retracted against the tension of the spring 17 and the pin end 38 being alined with the arm ope-ning 20, the latch bolt is readily re` tracted to the position shown in Fig. 7 and limited by the abutments 30 and 31`on the bracket plates 28. Vhen the disk 25 is released, spring tension on the bolt 15 automatically projects the same and causes the hook end 24 upon the rod 23 carried by the abutment 22 of the latch bolt rod to forcefully contact the pivoted lever 67 and shift the same slightly against the tension of the spring 69 to free theouter end of the blade 47 from the arm notch 70, it being understood that the double cam carried'by the disk 25 has returned to the position shown in Figs. 5 and 6 so that the springs 42 and shift the plate members 32 and 44 to their set positions shown in Fig. 5 and again disposing the pin 64 in the path of movement of the cam lug 27 and the pin end 38 out of alinement with the arm opening 20.
The mechanism above described is employed for releasing the lock at the inner side of the door and the devices to effect the 'release of the. lock mechanism from the outer side of the door includes a shaft 71 journaled through the opening 13 in the door 1 and projecting through the face plate 72 secured to the outer face of the door, the
outer end of the shaft 71 carrying an in dicator arm 73 rotating over the graduated dial 74. A plurality of disk tumblers 75 are associated with that end of the shaft 71 that extends intok the lock casing, the lower disk tumbler carrying an outwardly projecting lug 76 that is adapted to be moved into engagement with the spring 42 associated with the plate member 32 to shift said plate member and pin 38 independently of the plate member 44 and mechanism associated therewith, the disk tumblers'moving the pin 38 into alinement with the arm opening 20. The removable cover 11 for the lock casing carrying the key barrel 12, has said barrel embedded in the door 1 with the outer end of the key barrel 12 projecting through the face plate 72 at the outer side of the door. The inner face of the removable cover 11 has a pivoted cam member 77 mounted thereon, the pivot point being' concentric with the key opening` 78 in the key barrel with the outer end 77a of the cam set up or away from the cover plate and in a position to engage the inner face of the upper edge of the latch bolt arm 19, a stop lug or pin 78b carried by the cover plate 11 limiting movement of the rotary cam 77 in one direction. The cam is provided with a pair of openings 79 that receive the end wards 8O of the key 81 illustrated in Fig. 12 so that when the tumbler disks 75 are operated to move the lug 76 int-o engagement with the plate spring 42 for shifting the plate 32 and pin carried thereby, the key 81 may be inserted in the lock barrel 12 for rotating the cam 77 .to cause the end 77 n thereof to engage and shift the latch bolt arm 19. In this position, it will be noted that the abutment 22 of the cross arm 19 and the leg 56 associated with the blade 47 are engaged and said blade is shifted against the tension of the spring 49 with the inner end of the blade 47 projecting rearwardly through the slotted end wall 46 received in the registering slots 75a in the disk tumblers, substantially as positioned in Fig. 5.
The lock mechanism further includes a device for rendering the plate member' 44 and shiftable post inoperative in the event that someone would cut an opening in the door 1 and attempt to operate the post from the inner side of the door to release the lock mechanism and includes a rod 82 journaled at its outer end in the end wall 6 ofthe casing and further journaled at its inner end within the casing in the bearing plate 83, the outer end of the rod 82 having kerf openings 84 as shown in Fig. 5a while the inner end of the rod beyond the bearing 83 carries a laterallyk projecting pin 85 for purposes presently to appear, and a second pin 86 for limiting rotary movement of the rod in one direction. The ringend of the key 8l carries a pair of spaced spanner lugs 87 engaging the spanner openings 84 in the outer end oi the rod 82 for rotating said rod to position the pin 85 in the path ot' movement ont the pin 66 carried by the post 60 as shown in Fig. 8 and with the operating end of the rod 82 being positioned in the end wall 6 of the lock casing, access thereto is prevented when the door 1 is in a closed position abutting the casing frame 2. lith the plate member 44 and post 60 restrained against movement by the finger carried by the rod 82, it is necessary that the combination of the disk tumblers be known before the lock mechanism may be released. In employingthe rod 82 to lock the plate member 44 and bar 60 against movement, the bar member is iirst shifted to laterally displace the plate member 44 with the outer end thereof engaged in the notch of the pivoted arm 67 and the post 00 is then returned through the slot 'G1 by means of the disk 62 at which time the plate member 32 is shifted to aline the pin 38 with the arm opening 20. Then the door is closed, the bolt is automatically retracted and is then projected by the spring 17 when received in the keeper with the bent end 24 contacting the lever arm 67 to free the blade 47 and displace the pin 38, making it necessary for the disk tumblers 75 to be employed tor again shitting the pin 38 into a position for projection through the arm opening 20 to permit operation ot the latch bolt. Then the door has been opened, the rod 82 may be reversely rotated to displace the pin 85 from the path of movement of the pin 66 on the post 60 at which time the pin 38 may be shifted by sliding the post 60 through the slot 61.
The keeper for the head 16 ot the latch bolt includes a casing having a bottom Wall 88 and an edge iange 89 respectively engaging the inner face of the door frame and the edge oli the door frame opening as shown in Fig. 4, the front wall 90 of the keeper casing having an opening 91 therein for the entrance of the latch head 16, the keeper construction being more clearly shown in Figs. 18 to 2l.
The signalling devices associated with the lock casing includes a terminal 92 to which the wire 93 is attached, .the terminal 92 carrying a` contact arm 94 shown more clearly in Figs. 5 to 7 and normally engaging the contact carried by the terminal 96 having the lead-in wire 97, the electric Wires 93 and 97 being on the usual light cir cuit in communication with a suitably placed signal box that contains a lamp that is constantly illuminated. A terminal 98 having a lead-in wire 99 carries a contact arm 100 that is normally spaced Yfrom the contact 101 carried by the terminal 102 hav- Ving the lead-in wire 103, the electric wires 99 and 103 being connected to a suitable battery such as 104 illustrated in Fig. 3 to be presently described in connection with the circuit. An insulated plate 105 is carried by the outer face of the contact 95 and is positioned between the two contacts 95 and 100. `With the abutment 22 engaging the angle bracket leg 56 as shown in Fig. 5 and the pin 38 positioned laterally of the arm opening 20, tampering with the lock mechanism such as turning the disk 25 in an attempt to retract the latch bolt 15 will permit a slight movement ot' the latch bolt, the blade 47 and the latch bolt cross arm 19 with the latter engaging the forward end 38 of t-he pin 37 for shitting the pin 37 against the tension of the spring 34 to cause the insulated rear end edge 39 of the pin 37 to engage the contact 95 and shift the same to break the electrical connection between the contacts 94 and 95 with the insulation plate 105 engaging the contact 100 to move the same into engagement with the contact 101 thereby breaking the light circuit and shutting oli' the signal lamp and closing the circuit wires 99 and 103 for sounding the audible signal 106 shown in Fig. 3, the cutting out of the lamp and the sounding ot' the alarm giving the signal that the lock is being tampered with by unauthorized persons. When it is desired to eiiect operation of the lock without the sounding ot signals, the switch 104"L shownin Fig. `3 may be employed for breaking the circuit.
The battery circuit is illustrated in Fig. 3 and similar apparatus may be employed for the light circuit, sections of metallic tubing 107 carried by the door 1 and frame 2 being connected to the lock casing 3 and keeper casing 4 and through the medium of hinged connections 107a terminating in a single pipe extension 107b having `the circuit wires A and B extending therefrom the circuit wires A and B including the battery 104 and audible signal 106. The battery circuit wires for the contact contained within the lock casing pass through the pipe sections 107 carried by the door for communication with the battery 104 and signal 106, controlled by the hand switch 104, the circuit wires associated with the keeper casing 4 including a terminal 108 to which the lead-in wire 109 is attached, a wire 110 extend-ing from the terminal 108 to the terminal 111 carried by the bottom wall 88 of the keeper casing, the terminal 111 being insulated from the casing as at 112 and being in electrical connection with the pin 113 extending through a hollow screw stud 114 mounted kin the bottom-wall of the keeper casing with the outer end of the pin 113 normally spaced 'l'rom the walls of an opening formed in the bracket 115 carried by the edge ange 89. The other lead-in wirell is attached to the gli terminal 117 that is grounded to the keeper casing and Acarries an arm extension 118 as shown in Figs. 18 and 21. The terminal 108 carries an arm 119 to which a spring Contact 120 is attached and is normally spaced from the arm 118.
As shown in Figs. 3b and 3c the tubing sections 107 house a coil spring 121 that is stretched and anchored at its ends in said tubing, the spring 121 being spaced from the tubing by insulation blocks 122 and further spaced at the elbow 123 of the pipe sections by the insulation block 122n adjusted by the screw 124, one of the Wires 109 and 116 being attached to the tubing 107 while the other is attached to the stretched coil spring 121. If a person attempts to 'force the lock mechanism by inserting an implement into the keeper casing, movement of the contact arm 120 into engagement with the arm 118 Will complete a circuit to sound the signal 106 and if the terminal 111 is distorted, the pin 113 moves into contact With the bracket 113 for also completing the circuitthrough the grounding of the Wires. Should a person attempt to cut the tubing sections 107, the coil spring 21 would be moved into engagement with the tubing 107 for completing the circuit and sounding the alarm.
From the above detail description of the apparatus, it is believed that the construction and operation of the lock mechanism and signal apparatus Will at once be Linderstood. vand While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein Without departing from the spirit and scope ot the invention as claimed.
llVhat is claimed as new is 1. In a lock of the type described, a casing. a tensioned sliding latch bolt therein, an abutment carried by the inner end of the latch bolt and having an opening therein, a tensioned sliding pin pivota-lly supported in the casing With the end of the pin normally out of alinelnent With the abutment opening, and means for shitting the pin into alinement with the abutment opening to permit sliding movement of the latch bolt.
2. In a lock of the type described, a casing, a tensioned sliding latch bolt therein, an abutment carried by the inner end of the latch bolt and having an opening therein` a tensioned sliding lpin pivotally supported in the casing With the end of the pin normally out of alinement with the abutment opening, and cooperating sliding and pivoted members associated With the pin for shitting the same into alinement with the abutment opening to permit sliding movement of the latch bolt.
8. In a lock of the type described, a casing, a. tensioned sliding latch bolt therein,
an abutment carried by the inner end of the latch bolt and having an opening therein. a tensioned sliding pin p-ivotallv supported in the casing with the end of the pin normally out of alinement With the abutment open- "i ing, and disk tumblers for shifting the pin into ahnement With the abutment opening.
4. In a lock of the type described. a casing, a tensioned sliding latch bolt therein,

means for restraining the latch bolt against movement, cooperating sliding and pivoted members associated with the restraining member for shifting the latter to a position to permit sliding movement of the latch bolt. and means coopera-ting With the pivoted member for holding the same and restraining member in shifted position.
6. In a lock of the type described, a casing, a tensioned sliding latch bolt therein, means for restraining the latch bolt against movement, cooperating sliding and pivoted members associated with the restraining member for shifting the latter to a position to permit sliding movement of the latch bolt, means cooperating With the pivoted meinber for holding` the same and restraining member in shifted position, and means carried by the latch bolt adapted to engage the last named means when the latch bolt approaches its limit of projection for releasing the pivoted member and permitting the restraining means being returned to operative position for preventing sliding movement of the latch bolt.
7. In a lock of the type described. a casing, a tensioned sliding latch bolt therein. means for restraining the. latch bolt against movement, cooperating sliding and pivoted members associated with the restraining member for shifting the latter to a position to permit sliding movement of the latch bolt, and a tensioned device automatically engagingthe pivoted member for holding the same and restraining member in shifted position.
8. In a lock of the type described. a casing, a tensioned sliding latch bolt therein, means for restraining the latch bolt against movement, cooperating sliding and pivoted members associated With the restraining member for shitting the latter to a position to permit sliding movement of the latch bolt, a tensioned device automatically engaging the pivoted member for holding the same and restraining member in shifting position, and means carried by the latch bolt adap-ted to engage the last named means when the 'latch bolt approaches its limit of projection for releasing the pivoted member and permitting the restraining means being returned to operative position for preventing slidingl movement of the latch bolt.
9. In a lock of the type described, a casing, a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having an opening therein and an abutment at one end, a. tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carried by the plate having its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and normally out of alinement with the arm opening, and cooperating sliding and pivoted members associated with Y the pivoted plate for shifting the pin into alinement with the arm opening.

In a lock of the type described, a casing, a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having an opening therein and an abutment at one end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carried by the plate having its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and normally out of alinement with the arm opening, and disk tumb'lers associated with the pivoted plate for shifting the plate and pin into alinemen-t with the arm opening to permit sliding movement of the latch bolt. i

Iii a lock of the type described, a casing, a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having an opening therein and an abutment at one end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carried by the plate having its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and normally out of alinement with the arm' opening, disk tumblers associated with the pivoted plate for shifting the plate and pin into alinement with the arm opening to permit sliding movement of the latch bolt, and a key-operated device for sliding the latch bolt.

In ailocli of the type described, a casing a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having an opening therein and an abutment at one end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carried by the plate having its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and norm-ally out of alinement with the arm opening, cooperating sliding and pivoted member-s associated with the pivoted plate for shifting the pin into alinement with the arm opening, and a knob-disk operated cam member' for sliding the latch bolt.

In a lock of the type described, a casing, a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having an opening therein and an abutment at one end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carried by the plate having its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and normally out of alinement with the arm opening, another tensioned plate pivoted in the casing, an arm carried by one end of the second plate engaging the first plate, a member slidable in the casing engaging the second plate for pivotally moving the two plates to aline the pin with the arm opening, and means for retracting the latch bolt.

In a lock of the type described, a casing, a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having anopening therein and an abutment at one end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carried by the pla-te having its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and normally ont of alinement with the arm opening, another tensioned plate pivoted in the casing, an arm carried by one end of the second plate engaging the iirst plate, a member slidable in the casing engaging the second plate for pivotally moving the two plates to aline .the pin with the arm opening, meansfor retracting the latch bolt, said second named pivoted plate including' a forwardly tensioned sliding blade, an` angle arm carried by the blade normally in the path of movement of the abut-ment and displaced laterally thereof when the plate is shifted.
15;'In a lock of the type described, a casing, a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm' carried by` the latch bolt having an opening therein and an abutment atone end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carried by the plate having its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and normally out of alinement with the arm opening, another tensioned plate pivoted in the casing, an arm carried by one end of the second plate engaging the first plate, a member slidable in the casing engaging the second plate for pivotally moving the -two plates to aline the pin with the arm opening, means for retracting the latch bolt, said second named pivoted plate including a forwardly tensioned sliding blade, an angle arm carried by the blade normally in the path o-f movement of the abutment and displaced laterally thereof when the plate is shifted, a tensioned lever arm adapted to engage the forward end of the blade for momentarily holding the two pivoted plates in shifted positions against the spring tension thereon and a forwardly extending rod carried yby the abutment adapted for striking the lever' arm upon projection of the bolt to release the same from the blade t0 permit shifting movements of the two plates.

In a lock of the type described, a casing, a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having yan opening therein and an abutment at one end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carried by the plate having its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and normally out of alinement with the arm opening, cooperating sliding and pivoted members associated with the pivoted plate for shifting the pin into alinement with the arm opening, disk tumblers operating independently of the sliding and pivoted members for shifting the plate carrying pin into alinement with the arm opening, and a key-operated device for shifting the bolt.

In a lock of the type described, a casing, a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having an opening therein and an abutment at one end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carried by the plate having its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and normally out of alinement with the arm opening, cooperating -sliding and pivoted members associated with the pivoted plate for shifting the pin into alinement with the arm opening, disk tumble-rs operating independently of the sliding and pivoted members for shifting the plate carrying pin into alinement with the arm opening, a key-operated device for shifting the bolt, the sliding member for shifting the second named plate embodying a. post, a. pin projecting laterally therefrom, and means engaging the pin for arresting movement thereof and rendering the lock mechanism releasable only upon operation of the disk tumblers.
18. In a lock of the type described, a casing, a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having an opening therein and an abutment at one end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carried by the platehaving its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and normally ont of alinement with the arm opening, cooperating sliding and pivoted members associated with the pivoted plate for shifting the pin into alinement with the arm opening, disk tumblers operating independently of the sliding and pivoted members for shifting the plate carrying pin into alinement with the arm opening, a keyoperated device for shifting the bolt, the sliding member for shifting the second named plate embodying a post, a pin projecting laterally therefrom, means engaging the pin for arresting movement thereof and rendering the lock mechanism releasable only upon operation of the disk tumblers, and a knob-disk carrying a cam engaging the cross arm for retracting the bolt.

In a. lock of the type described, a casing, a sliding latch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having an opening therein and an abutment at one end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pin carriedV by the plate having its forward end terminating adjacent I the arm and normally out of alinement with the arm opening, cooperating sliding and pivoted members associated with the pivoted plate for shifting the pin into alinement with the arm opening, disk tumblers operating independently of the sliding and pivoted members for shifting the plate carrying pin into alinement with the armyopening, a keyoperated device for shifting the bolt, the sliding member for shifting the second named plate embodying a post, a pin projecting laterally therefrom, means engaging the pin for arresting movement thereof and rendering the lock mechanism releasable only upon operation of the disk tnmblers, i
a` knob-disk carrying a cam engaging the cross arm for retracting the bolt, a depending lug carried by the cam and a second pin carried by the post normally engaging the lug to prevent movement of the knob-disk and cam.

In a lock of the type described, a casing, a slidinglatch bolt therein, a cross arm carried by the latch bolt having an opening therein and an abutment at one end, a tensioned plate pivoted in the casing rearwardly of the arm, a pinfcarried by the plate having its forward end terminating adjacent the arm and normally out of alinement with the arm opening, cooperating sliding and pivoted members associated with the pivoted plate for shifting the pin into alinement with the arm opening, disk tumblers operating independently of the sliding and pivoted members for shifting the plate carrying pin j ture.
