UNITED STATES JOEL FRANK BARNETT, OF ALVA, KENTUCKY.
RAIL SPLICE AND CLAMP.
Application filed May 7, 1925. Serial No. 28,647.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOEL F. BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alva, in the county of Harlan and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Splices and Clamps; and I do hereby declare the fol-' means for forming the splice and clamping the ends of the rails together, the device being of a character that dispenses with the use of nuts and bolts in making'the joint.
A further object of the invention is the be quickly and securely joined and one in which the means for making the joint may be quickly removed when it is desired to replace a rail or for any other purpose.
To this end the invention consists of two members hingedly secured together and adapted to engage the meeting ends-0f the rails, the hinge member having a slidable pintle carrying a feather that engages a spline in the hinge knuckles of the two members that will lock the two members in engagement with the rails, one of said members having studs to engage bolt openings in the rails and the other member provided with sockets to receive the extremities of the studs.
The construction and operation and advantages of the invention will be described,
in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of meeting ends of two rails with the improved rail splice and clamp in position,
Figure 2 a bottom plan view of the rail splice and clamp,
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views on the planes indicated by the lines 33 and 44, respectively, of Figure 1,
Figure 5 a horizontal longitudinal sectional view,
Figure 6 a longitudinal sectional view of the hinge member,
provision of means by which the rails may Figure 7 a view in the members, and 5 m Figure 8 a similar view of member.
perspective of one of the j other In the drawings similarreference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. 1
The improved rail sphce andolampcomprises two members designated generally A;
and B, respectively, said ,members being .hingedly connected together by means, of
hinge knuckles 1 on member Aandhinge knuckle 2 on member B.- Member A hasa base plate 3 that seats underthe base of the rails C and C and a splice bar 4 adapted to engage one side of the webs of said rails and integrally connected with the outer edge of base plate 3 by means of an inclined-web 5. The member B has asplicebar 6'that engageson the opposite side of the, rails from the splice bar 4 and an inclined supporting member 7 carrying the knuckle 2 heretofore described.
Splice bar 4: is provided with a plurality of studs 8 that are adapted to engage the usual bolt openings in railroad rails G and C, and splice bar 6 is provided with sockets 9 alined with the studs 8 and adapted to receive their extremities when in engagement with the rail joint.
The pintle of the hinge, provided with a feather engages a spline 12 in one of the end knuckles 1 and the adjacent knuckle 2, and it will be understood that when the feather is in engagement with both of the splines the two members will be locked in engaging position with the rails. The pintle 10 is extended beyond the hinge knuckle as shown at 13 and has mounted thereon an expansible coil spring 14 with its extremities engaging a washer 15 and a suitable nut or other member 16 engaging the outer end of the pintle. It will be understood that with this construction when the device is in the position shown in the drawings the two members A and B will be securely locked together and by means of the studs 8 engaging the bolt openings in the ends of the rails, the meeting ends of the rails will be held joined. lVhen it is desired to release the device from the rails, the pintle 6 will be moved to compress the coil spring 14 so as to remove the designated 10 is splines to engage said feather, and resilient feather 11 from the spline 12 in knuckle 2 and the two members may then be swung apart and removed from the rails, and when placed on the rails, the members being in open position, the device will automatically look through the instrumentality of the spring 14 when the two members are properly positioned and the splines 12 in knuckles 1 and 2 are alined.
\Vhat is claimed is:
1. In a rail splice and clamp, two members adapted to engage the meeting ends of railroad rails, a hinge including a pintle pivotally connecting the members, and means coop rative with the pintle of the hinge to lock the members in engagement with the rails.
2. In-a rail splice and clamp, two members adapted to engage the meeting ends of railroad rails, said members being provided with alined hinge knuckles, a pintle engaging said knuckles, a feather on said pintle, and the knuckles formed wtih a spline to engage said feather.
bers adapted to engage the me ting ends of railroad rails, said members being provided with alined hinge knuckles, a pintle slidably engaging said knuckles, a feather on said pintle, the knuckles formed with sockets to receive the ends of said studs,
and means to lock said members in engagement with the rails.
5. A rail splice and clamp comprising complemental members'hingedly secur d together and adapted to engage the meeting ends of railroad rails, studs on one of said members adapted to engage openings in the rails, the other member provided with sockets to receive the ends of said studs, said members being hinged together by means of ali ned hinge knuckles and a pintle slidably engaging said -knuckl s, two adjacent knuckles being splined, afeather on the pins tle engaging said splines, the end of the 3. In a rail splice and clamp, two mem-- pintle remote from the feather extended beyond the knuckles, and an expansible coil spring carried by said extended end of the pintle and normally urging the feather into engagement with splines.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
