1 UNITED STATES PATENTOF PIVOT BOLT.
Application filed June 25, 1925. Serial No. 39,593.
To all whom it may concern:
Bait-known that I. Gizonon T. OvniuNo,
i J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pivot Bolts, of which the followingis a specificaing rod yoke with the spindle arm of an automobile, such as a Ford automobile.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is adjustable to compensate for wear, and when properly adjusted will hold the parts against rattling.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the elements constituting the pivot bolt, the same being separated, and,
Figure 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the device, parts in elevation.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a spindle arm, carrying the usual tubular head 6, which may be equipped with a liner or bushing 7. The numeral 8 designates the yoke carried by the spindle connecting rod 9. The yoke embodies upper and lower arms 10, having openings 11 and 12. This is the usual construction found in automobiles, such as the Ford automobile.
The pivot bolt embodying my invention includes a cylindrical body portion 13, provided at its lower end with a reduced screw threaded portion 14. The body portion 13 is provided at its upper end with a cylindrically curved head 15, having fiat faces 16, whereby the head may be held or turned by a wrench or the like. Formed integral with the body portion 13 and projecting above the head 15 is a reduced screwthreaded portion 17, having a longitudinal slot 18, of a substantial length. The tubular body portion is provided with a longitudinal lubricant supplying port or bore 19, which leads at its lower end into a radial port 20, dis:
charging to the bushing 7. The port or bore 19 extends upwardly through the reduced portion 17, and leads into and through the slot 18,. to the top of the reduced screwthreaded portion 17. i 2 J The body portion 13 of the pivot bolt is passed through the opening. 11, and its reduced portion 14 is passed through the openingc12. This reduced screw-threaded portion receives a nut 21,,held against accidental rotation by a cotter pin 22, passed through a transverse-opening 23, in the reduced screw-threaded portion 14;.

The numeral-23 designates an adjustable wear compensating nut, having a screwthreaded bore 24, for the reception of the reduced screw-threaded portion or extension 17. This compensating nut has a polygonal face 25, for the reception ofga wrench or the like,-and these faces have radial openings 26, for receiving acotter pin 27 which is adapted to pass through the elongated slot 18. The compensating nut 23' is provided with a depending annular flange or skirt 28, which rotatably receives the head 15, and contacts with the top of the knuckle arm 10.
When the openings 11 and 12 wear, which would result in rattling, the cotter pin 27 is removed. and the compensating nut 23 is rotated, bringing the flange or skirt 28 into firm engagement with the upper arm 10 of the yoke, which serves to raise the pivot bolt, and clamping the same to the yoke thus positively preventing rattling. The cotter pin is then inverted in the selected opening 25 and will pass through the vertical slot 18, by virtue of its length. As the opening 2 1 of the compensating nut passes through the top thereof, oil or like lubricant can be supplied to the port or bore 19, and if desired, a grease cup can be screwed into the upper end of the bore 24.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim ing the screw-threaded extension and hav ing a depending annular flange to receive the: cylindrically curved head and to contact with the top arm of the yoke, said compression nut having radial openings for the reception of a cotter pin which is adapted" to pass through the elongated slot ot the screw-threaded extension.
2. The combination with a tubular head of a spindle arm and the yoke of the spindle connecting rod, of a bolt to pivotally connect the same,a,-nut carriedby the lower end of the bolt, a head carried by the top of the bolt, a screw-threaded extension c'arried by the 'top of the bolt and having a longitudinal slot, and a compression nut engaging the screw-threaded extension and having a depending skirtto receive the head of the bolt andto contact with the top arm of theyoke, said skirt being adapted to turn about said head, said compression nut havin g radial openings for the reception of a pin adapted to enter the longitudinal slot of the screw-threaded extensionb 8. The combination with a spindle arm and the yoke of the spindle connecting rod, of a bolt pivotally connecting the same, a nut carried by one end of the bolt, a head carried by the other end of the bolt, a screw-threaded extension carried by the end of the bolt having the head and provided with a longitudinal slot and a C0111- pensating nut engaging the screw-threaded extension and having a skirt to surround said 'head and turn about the same and to contact with one arm of the yoke, said compensating nut having a plurality of open; ings, for receiving a locking pin to enter the longitudinal slot.
4. The combination of a bolt-of the character described, a nut having screw-threaded engagement with one end of the bolt, a head formed upon the opposite end of the bolt, a screw-threaded extension carried by' the end of the bolt having the head and-provided with a longitudinal slot, and a compensating nut engaging the screw-threaded extension and having skirt to receive the head and to rotate about the same, said compensating nut having a plurality of spaced transverse openings forthe 'reception of a locking pin.
