Description
H; a; THOMPSON. Machines. fqr'l'acking Boots and Shoes Patented Sept. 29,1874.
F5 6 RA!" I C CO. PHOTIFUTH. 39 8m PM VK PLACE, N-Y- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY Cr. THOMPSON, OF MILFORD, CONNECTICUT.
I IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR TACKING BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,554, dated September 29, 1874; application filed August 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY G. THOMPSON, of Milford, county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Tacking Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of tackdriving machines in which the tacks are lifted and held by a reciprocating hammer while being driven; and the nature of my invention consists in providing the hammer with a central hole or perforation for the purpose of exhausting the atmospheric air, and cause suction by which the tacks may be lifted and held in position during the process of driving, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tack-driving hammer embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
The machines for which I have specially designed my invention are those in which a magnetic hammer has been used to lift and hold the tacks while being driven, the hammer operating intermittently up and down, as fully described in previous patents for tack-driving machines.
A represents such hammer, constructed substantially in the same manner, and operated the hammer while being driven by it into their places.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In the process of driving tacks, the method of lifting and holding them by suction for the action of the driver, substantially as described.
2. A tack-driving hammer, provided with a central hole or passage, and connected with an exhaust-tube for the purpose of lifting and holding the tacks to be driven, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto affix my signature this 27th day of August, 1874.
HENRY e. TnoMPsoN.
