TANK HEATER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tank Heaters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tank heaters and is particularly adapted to be used for heat ing water tanks for poultry cars, and the like.

The invention is fully described in the following specification, and is shown in the accompanying; drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a partial transverse section through the stateroom of a poultry car, embodying the invention;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the tank and heater on the line 2 of Figure 1; and,

Figure 3 is an isometric projection of the water tank.

The invention is illustrated in connection with a poultry car having a floor 10, sides 11, and a roof 12, the car having a water tank 13 carried by supports 14 near the roof of the car. Tanks of thiskind which can be filled through the pipe 15 by removing the cap 16, are commonly used for supplying feed water for poultry carried in other parts of the car (not shown).

In cold weather, these tanks frequently freeze, and the present invention is intended to overcome this difiiculty.

The stateroom shown in Figure 1 is occupied by the tender and is commonly equipped with a stove 17, whereby it is heated. The tank 13 is provided with a pipe 18 which extends therethrough, as shown in Figure 2, and preferably has a cross-arm 19. with a bathe-plate 20 secured Serial No. 658,820.

The pipe 21, extending upwardly from the stove, carries the hot burned gases from the stove. These pass up and around the baffle-plate 20 so that the gases come intimately into contact with the

18 and 19, thereby warming the water in the tank which surrounds these pipes. Cooled gases then pass on outthrough the smoke pipe 22, which extends through the roof of the car.

While I have shown and described but a single embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made which do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claim in which it is my intention to cover all novelty inherent in the invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.

I claim:

In combination with a water tank adapted to be located in a car adjacent the top thereof, a pipe in said tank having end portions projecting through and secured to the top and bottom of said tank, whereby said pipe may be connected in and form a portion of the discharge fine of a stove, said pipe between said end portions having a laterally elongated portion, a battle within said elongated portion extending in the direction of the length thereof, and interposed between said end portions, whereby to interrupt direct communication between said end portions and cause the products of combustion to travel through the length of said elongated portion.
