R. P. COSTELLO HOT AIR FuRNAcE .Fea'Jyme so, 192; :Sheets-sheet s 24'. The coal chute 21 is also kept cool or comparatively cool by means of an air inlet 29, adapted to permit cold air to enter the front of the furnace and to permit it to contact with the bottom and side of the chute and to flow into the combustion chamber by a passage 16, thereby assisting combustion as well as providing an auxiliary air supply. l
30 is a sliding asli plate at the bottom of the fire place, and is adapted to be pulled out by means of a hooked poker or rod. A
shut-off for the hopper may also be used.
From the foregoing, it'will be seen that the essential features of my improved furnace are the inclined grate suitably mounted between side walls, adapted to receive coal from a hopper swingingly mounted on the -outside of the furnace, thereby providing ready access to the fire for purposes of poking ashes or clinkers downwards into the ash pit, after which the sliding ash plate is pulled out by any suitable means, and the clinkers or otherwise removed. The hopper is then swung back into place and securely locked with a suitable looking device.
The joints' between the hopper and the furnace casing are preferably made airtight in any well-known manner. The feeding -of the coal from the hopper is gradual and downwards as the fire burns, the swinging hopper also enables the fire to be kindled very easily. The swinging hopper, in combination with the inclined grate, are, as will be noted from the foregoing, features of my invention.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
iVhat I claim as niy invention is:
1. In a hot air furnace of the character described, a furnace casing and, in combination, a hopper swingingly mounted on the outside of the casing and communicating therethrough, a feed door for the hopper, a fireplace provided with sloping grate bars, wall plates for the fireplace adapted, in combination with suitable upper and lower plates, to form a chute between the hopper and the fireplace, an air intake for the combustion chamber, an adjustable hinged plate in the chute, a slidably operable ash plate for the fire place, and means for adjusting the hinged plate to regulate the supply of coal for the fireplace.
2. A furnace of the character described, in combination with a Vfirep'lace having sloping grate bars, and a slidable ash plate, a feed hopper hingedly mounted on the outside of the furnace casing and communicating therethrough, a supply chute between the fireplace and the hopper, a hinged plate adjustably mounted on the chute, means for raising and lowering the hinged plate to regulate the supply of fuel, a vertical'baflle mounted adjacent the chute to deflect the heat therefrom, air intake means acting in combination with said baflie for cooling said chute.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with the furnace proper having a fireplace provided with a suitably arranged grate, of a swinging hopper on the furnace casing and communicating with the furnace therethrough, a fuel feed chute between the hopper and the fire place, a plate operatively mounted on the chute, alever for raising and lowering said plate, a vertical baflie deflecting heat from the chute, and air intake means adapted, in combination with said bafile for cooling said chute and completing combustion.
4. A hot air furnace of the character described having a casing, a substantally centrally located fireplace having an Vinclined grate on one side thereof, an inclined coal chute inside the casng and at substantially the same inclination as vthe .grate, a coal hopper von the outside of the casing leading into the chute, part of said chute being movable to restrict its outlet and lessen the thiclness of coal on the grate in the fireplace.
5. A hot air furnace as claimed in claim 4 having ash plates at the bottom of the grate.
6. A hot air furnace as claimed in claim 4, having the fireplace constructed with its ends and sides formed of the inner shell, an ash plate in the. bottom of the grate, and a baffie plate in the combustion chamber to protect the chute from direct action of the heated combustion.
7 A hot air furnace as claimed in claim 4, having the fire pot constructed with its ends and sides formed of the inner shell, an ash plate in the bottom of the grate, a baffle plate in the combustion chamber to protect the chute from direct action of the heated combustion, a pivoted plate on the upper side of the chute, and means to adjust the plate to control the thickness of fuel on the grate and in the fire pot.
8. A hot air furnace as claimed in claim 4, having the fire pot constructed with its ends and sides formed of the inner shell, an ash plate in the bottom of the grate, a
baflle plate in the combustion Chamber to protect the chute froin direct action of the heated comloustion, a pivoted plate on the upper side of the chute, means to adjust 5 the plate to control the thickness of fuel on the grate and in the fire pot, an auxiliary draught danper With a duct leading around ROBERT PATRICK COSTELLO.
