Description
lHELEN M.' MACDNALD. Dress-Prbtectnrs.
N0 155,534 A Patented sept.29,v1a'74.
n Juden/iwi 'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HELEN MARIE MACDONALD, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRESS-PROTECTORS.
Specification'forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,534, dated September 29, 1874; application tiled May 10, 1873.
To all-whom it may concern:
VBe it known that I, HELEN M. MACDONALD, of Lowell, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dress-Protectors, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication.
My invention relates to protectors for the lower edge of dresses and other garments; and consists of a band or strip of iiuted or plated fabric, either waterproof itself or covered or bound with any waterproof material.
In the drawing,Figure l represents a view of a detached portion of the dress-protector, and Fig. 2 represents the protector as applied to the bottom of the dress-skirt.
A is the plated or uted band, which is waterproofed or bound with waterproof material, and a is aheading to which it may be secured for better attachment to the garment.
Heretofore skirt-protectors have been made of a plated or fiuted strip of wiggan or other fabric sti'ened with starch, whichfupon becoming wet, gets'limp, loses its shape, and
absorbs the dirt, besides being objectionable on account of the harsh scraping noise it makes upon the pavement.
By my improvement these objections are overcome. The waterproof protector preserves the lower edge of the dress from all moisture 0n the ground, retains its rigidity and proper shape, giving a graceful hang to the skirt, and can easily be cleaned.
Having thus described my invention, what IClaim, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a skirt facing or protector, having a Iiuted or plated border bound with or composed of enameled cloth or other waterproof material, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HELEN MARIE MACDONALD.
