ERNEST DUCHESNE, OF SGHENECTADY, NEW YORK.
LOCOMOTIVE DRIVING BOX.
Original application filed July 27, 1922, Serial No. 577,788. Divided and this application filed January To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST DUCI-IESNE, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locomotive Driving Boxes, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for lubricating the journal of an axle, which rotates in a locomotive driving; box, by efl'ecting the automatic supply of lubricating material thereto, during the operation of the locomotive on which such driving box is applied.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a locomotive driving box and the adjoining wheel hub, illustrating an embodiment of my invention, the section of the upper portion of the box being taken in its middle longitudinal plane, and that of the lower portion on the plane of the line a a: of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a view, the right hand half of which is a rear elevation of the driving box, and the left hand half a transverse section through the same, on the line b b of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a view, half in plan and half in longitudinal horizontal section, of the journal brasses; Fig. 4, a rear end view, in elevation, of the same; and, Fig. 5, a side view, partly in section.
In the practice of my invention, referring descriptively to the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified, the body, 5, of the driving box, is substantially in U form, closed at top by a. saddle block, 6, and has atapered bore for the reception of two counterpart journal brass sections, 7, 7, which abutl in the middle longitudinal plane of the driving box, and when in position therein, entirely surround the journal, 2, of the driving axle, 2, which rotates therein. The complete detailed construction of the journal brasses and their relation to the body of the driving box, are fully set forth in my co-pending application, filed July 27, 1922, Serial No. 577,788, of which this application is a division, and they are not therefore claimed herein.
section journal bearing,
Serial- No. 5,760.
In order to enable automatic lubrication of the journal brasses, while in service, to be conveniently and effectively performed, one or more lubricant cellars, 5, is or are formed upon, or fixed to, the bottom of the body, 5, of the driving box, said cellars being downwardly inclined therefrom, and projecting from the inner side thereof. In the preferred construction shown in the drawing, two lubricant cellars, located in opposite sides of. the middle longitudinal plane of the driving box, are applied, thereby ensuring free access of the lubricant to each of the journal brass sections. Each of the lubricant cellars is in open communication with a chamber or cavity, 5, in the body of the driving box, said chambers registering with orifices, 7 in the journal brasses, through which the lubricant passes to the inner sides thereof.
The lubricant is forced from the cellars, 5, to the journal brasses, by springs, 11, bearing on pistons, 10, fitting in the cellars, the outer ends of which] are closed by removable heads or covers, 13, by the removal of which the cellars may be supplied with lubricant, as from time to time required. The quantity of lubricant remaining in the cellars, and the requirement of replenishment thereof, are determined by the position of indicating rods, 12, fixed to the pistons, 10, and projecting outwardly from the cellars, through the heads, 13, thereof.
My invention provides means for automatically lubricating the journal bearings of alocomotive driving axle, which are simple, effective, readily accessible, and which do not involve any substantial increase of weight or cost, or interference with adjacent members of the structure of the locomotive.
I- claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a locomotive driving box, the combination of a body, having. lubricant receiving chambers on opposite sides of its middle longitudinal plane, adjoining its bottom; a two fitted in the body, each section having its inner side open to one of the chambers; two lubricant cellars,
each projecting downwardly and towards bers; and spring actuated pistons, fitted in said lubricant. cellars.
2. A locomotive driving box having two lubricant chambers in its lower portion, one
5 on each side of the median vertical plane,
bearingbrasses in said box, each provided with an orifice adjoining the correspondin'g,
chamber, two lubricant cellars extending downwardly from the box, each communicating with: one of said chambers, and means to 10 force lubricant; from said cellars into said chambers.
ERNEST DUCHESNE.
