COMBINATION LOCK OR PADLOOK.
Application filed August 14, 1923. Serial No. 657,398.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILHRLM OFFELDER, a citizen of Austria, residing at Linz. Austria, have invented a new and useful. Combination Lock or Padlock, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a com bination lock or padlock particularly for use on the doors of railway cars or the like of the kind in which a headed locking bolt. adapted to be passed through the eyes provided on the railway cars and to be locked therein is secured to a casing engaging its non-headed end by means of freely rotat able discs each carrying a projection, said casing being furnished with adjustable numeralor dial ring separated by partitions or intermediate walls.
The look if out of use may be easily taken to pieces in order to clean and grease its parts or if necessary to exchange any part or parts thereof, so that the life of the lock can be increased considerably.
According to the present invention the casing is open at both ends and provided with a screw-thread at one of the said ends and a cover or lid furnished with an outer screw-thread is adapted'to be screwed into the screw-threaded end of the said casing, thesaid cover being also provided with an inner screw-thread threaded in an opposite direction to said outer screwthread so that the locking bolt furnished with a screw-thread is adapted to co-operate with the said second screw-thread of the cover. Therefore, if the cover is screwed into the casing and the bolt is inserted into the latter and screwed into the cover, it is impossible to unscrew or remove the cover from the casing, as the two screw-threads of the cover wind in opposite directions. Thus it is impossible to take the lock to pieces as is the case if the lock is open. Also the locking bolt, which if removed may be taken to pieces by means of removing a split-pin, cannot be taken to pieces if the lock is inthe locked condition, as the said split-pin rests within the casing.
One mode of carrying out the present invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying'sheet of drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front view, and
Fi'. 2 a sectional view of the lock in the poked condition.
the partition or inter- The lock according to the present invention comprises two mainparts, viz, a casing and a locking bolt. The casing consists of an angular member 1 which is open at the ends and provided with a screw-thread at one of these ends. A lid 2, furnished with a screw-thread 3, is adapted to be screwed into the screw-threaded end of the casing member, in order to close up the latter at that end. Further the member 1 is pro vided with an elongated slot 4, which renders possible the rotation of the numeralor dial rings 8 and at'the inside with a longitudinally extending groove 5, which serves for securing the partitions or intermediate walls to be described later on. At the other end, e. g. opposite the lid, the member 1 is provided with an opening 6, furnished with a small recess 7 and serving for the insertion of a bolt 18 into the casing The combination arrangement is disposed in the casing in the following manner The numeralor dial rings 8 are arranged in the annular casing 1, the said rings cor responding in diameter to the inside dianr eter of the annular casing, in order to pro vide a guiding surface during the rotation of the rings. -The latter are furnished with ten recesses 9 and the bits, provided on the locking bolt, are adapted to be pushed into one of the said recesses and to be adjusted together with the numeral-rings The latter are separated from one another by partitions or intermediate walls 10 provided with a small projection 11 which engages the groove 5 of the casing 1. In consequence thereof the partitions 10 are not adjustable and every partition is provided with a recess 9 corresponding in shape to the recesses 9 of the numeral-rings 8. In the illustrated embodiment four such rings, separated from one another by three partitions, are disposed within the casing and closed up at the side by the lid 2. The lid is provided with a groove 12 for the reception of a circular and partly outwardly bent spring 13, in order to subject the numeral-rings to a lateral pressure; Besides the screwthread 3 the lid 2 is furnished with two holes 14 for the insertion of a suitable key, in order to screw the lid into or out of the casing 1. Further the lid is provided with an internal screw-thread 15 -tor the recention of the screw-threaded end oi the locking bolt. At the outside o't the casing 1 is provided with a cylindrical sleeve 16, in order to protect it against the influence ofthe weather, soiling and the like. The sleeve 16 is "furnished with a slot, which in size corresponds to the slot 1 in the casing 1 and is secured against lateral movement by the rim 17 ofthe casing and the head of the lid.
The locking bolt constitutes the second main-part of the lock according to the present invention and consists of two parts, viz: the head 18 with the shank .19 and the bolt-shaped extension 21 whose screwthreaded end 20 is screwed into the shank 19 and which is provided with alternating discs 22 and 23 of which only the discs 22' are furnished with bits. In the illustrated embodiment are provided tour discs 22 and three discs 23. The shank 19 is furnished with a reduced part 24, through which a split-pin 25 is passed, the latter serving for securing the extension 21 screwed into the shank 19. The other end of the extension 21 is screw-threaded as indicated by 27 and provided with a slot 28 for the insertion ofa screw-driver. However the screw-thread 27 passes in opposite direction to the screw thread 3 of the lid, e. g. one screw-thread being right-handed and the other left-handed.
A disc provided with an elongated projection 30 and adapted to fill up the small recess 7 of the opening 6 of the casing 1 if the locking bolt has been inserted into the latter, is movably disposed on the said bolt at the side of the first disc 22.
In operation. in order to lock the locking bolt in position in the casing the discs 22 of the former are rotated until the projections thereon are in the same straight line and, the numeral rings 8 of the casing having been 'set at some predetermined lnu'mber thus bring one of the slots of each ring 8 into alignment with the slots 9 of the fixed rings 10, the locking bolt is pushed into the casing, the projections of the discs 22 passing through the aligned slots of the numeral rings 8 and the fixed rings it), until the threaded end of said locking bolt engages the commencement ot the inner thread of the cover 2 of the casing. when each of said pro ections just enters a slot 9 of a fixed ring 10. The locking bolt is then rotated so that its inner threaded end is screwed into the inner thread of the cover 2', rotation of the discs 22 being prevented by the engagement of their projections in the slots 9 oi the fixed rings 10, When the locking bolt is screwed fully home, the discs 22 have passed the fixed rings 10 and the projection of each new engages in one of the slots of a numeral ring 8 and the rings 8 may now be rotated as desired so as to move the projections of the discs 22 outof alignment with the slots 9 of the fixed rings 10.
It now an attempt be made to unscrew the locking bolt theprojeetions ot thediscs 22 thereon will engage the sides of the fixed discs 10 and will thus prevent axial movement of the locking bolt.
In order to remove the locking bolt, the numeral rings 8 must be rotated so as to present the predetermined number and bring the proiections of the discs 22 again into alignment with the slots 9 of the fixed rings 10 thus permitting axial movement of the locking belt.
