DEVICE FOR COVERING FINISHING MOLDING.
Application filed January 26, 1925. Serial No. 4,946.
To all who-m it may concern:
Be it known that l, Hon Ann D. Remnant, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati. in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Device for Covering Finishing Molding, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention :is to provide a device for applying a covering material to finishing molding such as is used in the trimming of vehicles and the like.
Another object is to provide a device. this kind which will perform the various steps in mounting and securing a cover upon molding of the type referred to. 7
Another object is to. provide means where by a core carrying mounting means for the molding may be fed through such machines and have a cover positioned and secured thereto without destroying the mounting means.
Another object is to provide a device of this kind which is simple and rapid of operation.
These and other objects are attained bythc means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which:

The device comprises a base carrying a pair of uprights 13 which revolubly support the main shaft 14 in suitable bearing bores 15. The shaft may be restrained from lateral displacement by means of collars 16 carrying suitable set screws 17 for engaging the shaft 14. A wheel 18 is pri'ivided with a peripheral shouldered groove 19 adapted to carry a rim 20 which is provided with an annular groove 21 the walls of which are complementary to the outside of the core of the finishing molding to be covered, As shown herein the groove 21. is semi-circular to accommodate a finishing molding having a half round outer face. The walls of the groove 21 may be suitably die cut if desired in order to emboss the surface of a covering material such as leather while said covering material is being applied. The wheel 18 is fixedly mounted on the shaft 14 forrotation therewith, by any suitable means such as a set screw 22 passing through the hub of the wheel 18 and engaging the shaft 1 1. The wheel 18 and .shaft 14 are manually actuated by any suitable means such as a hand crank 23 as shown or the shaft 14.- may be power driven by any suitable power means such as belt or chain drive. A guide support yoke 24 is substantially H-shaped in elevation and has its upright sides 25 mounted upon one side of the uprights 13 adjacent the top thereof. The horizontal portion of the yoke 24 is developed into an outwardly extending flange or table 26 and is adapted to carry the guide member 27 tangential with the wheel 18 and in alignment with the groove 21 therein. The guide member 27 may be fixedly secured to a thin plate 28 provided with slots through which screws 29 may pass for adjustably securing the plate and guide member upon the flange portion 26 of the yoke. The upper portion of the uprights 13 on the side opposite the yoke 24 are developed into outwardly extending projections 30. The projections 30 (see Figs. 1 and 3) each carry substantially U-shaped flat spring plates 31 secured thereto by means of bolts 82 upon one of the arms 33. The other arm 34 of the plate 31 is adapted to extend adjacent the periphery of the wheel 18 and carries upon its lower side a freely revolubly beveled disc 35. The beveled peripheral edges 36 of the discs project over the groove 21 in the wheel 18 and are slightly spaced one from the other for permitting an upstanding nail in a core passing through the machine to pass between said edges of the discs. The purpose of this structure will be explained later. The upper outer sides 37 of the uprights 13 are each provided with a substantially rectangular way or slot which is adapted to receive a complementary key or shoulder portion 39 of a block 40. Each block 40 is provided with a pair of enlarged bores or perforations 41 through which relatively smaller screws 42 may pass. The screws 42 engage in threaded bores in the uprights 13 and suitable washers 43 are employed therewith for mounting the blocks 40 on the uprights 37 with a limited vertical adjustment. The upper ends of the blocks 40 are provided with projections 44 which over-hang the top of the uprights 13. The blocks 44 are provided with diagonally disposed bores 45 in which are mounted studshafts 46 carrying diagonally disposed wheels 47 The wheels 47 are freely revoluble upon the shafts 46 and carry V-shaped peripheral grooves 48. A pair of brackets 49 are pivotally mounted at 50 on the up rights 13 and carry a freely revoluble peripherally slotted wheel 51 between them. The wheel 51 is held in yielding engagement with the wheel 18 by means of a suitable spring 52. A stud 53 extends between the brackets 49 and has its opposite threaded ends secured thereto by any suitable means .such as nuts 54. The central portion of the stud 53 is cut away to form a Hat face 55 upon which a guide 56 is mounted by means of suitable screws 57. The guide 56 is thus rigidly supported on the brackets 49 and is suitably curved to extend about the slotted periphery of the wheel 51. The free end 58 of the guide 56 has a flange portion 59 carrying a narrow slot 60 and a tapered opening 61 leading thereto, the opening and the slot 60 being in alignment with the peripheral slot 62 in the wheel 51.
The guide member 27 is provided with a longitudinal opening or way 63 of a pe i:'u liar contour. At the end indicated by line 5'5 on Fig. 4, the walls 64 of the guide form a substantially flat way having an upper opening 65. As shown in Fig. 6 the central portion of the guide shows the walls 64 on the upper portion thereof spaced farther apart and turned to form downward 1y extending flanges 66 while the remaining end as shown in Fig. 7 shows the walls 64 developed into a substantially circular way provided at its top with the downwardly extending flanges 66 which in this portion are but narrowly spaced. The purpose of the guide member 27 is to receive a strip of covering material 67 of leather orthe like at its flattened end see Fig. and at its central portion a core 68 of the finishing molding to be covered and to position or wrap the covering material 67 about the core 68 in a manner shown in Figs. 7 and 10.-
The core 67 is provided with a metallic cover clamping member 69 having sharp spaced and bendable prongs 70 disposed on opposite sides of the said line of the flat bottom of the core. The member 69 also is provided at intervals with plates 71 which carry upwardly extending nails 72 secured thereto by spot welding or any other suitable nieans. As the spring and core pass through the guide 27 the strip of covering material 68 following he guide walls passes from the fiat portion as shown in Fig. 5 and has its edges bent upwardlv as shown in Fig. 6 at which time it receives the core 68 and as it passes through the end shown in Fig. 7, the outer edges of the cover portion are positioned substantially above the prongs 70. The core and covering in this position now enter the groove 21 in the wheel 18 where the edges 73 of the cover 67 are engaged by the diagonally disposed wheels 47 whereupon the cover and core are frictionally retained in the groove 21. The wheel 18 is now rotated and the frictional contact of the core and cover between the wheel 18 and diagonally disposed wheels 47 presses the edges 73 tightly upon the top of the core 68 so that the prongs 70 pierce the covering material, the prongs 70 being bent from their outwardly inclined position to a substantially Vertical position by reason of their engagement with the outermost wall. of the groove 48. This operation having been performed upon a given portion of the core and cover. that portion now is moved forwardly by reason of the frictional engagement inst explained so that the upstanding prongs 70 come into engagement with the beveled. faces 36 of the discs 35 which turn the upstanding prongs 7O inwardly upon the said portions 73 of the cover. thus clinch inc: the cover upon the core. The nails 72 which have passed between the flanges 66 of the guide member and between the odors of the discs now enga e the walls of the tapered openings 61 in the member56 and are guided through the slot 60 so that thev may pass therefrom into the slot 62 in the wheel 51. The wheel 51 and slot 21 in the groove now receive the core with the clinched cover thereon between them and the p es sure exerted by said wheels serves to further clinch the prongs 70 and to deep y embed them into the leather or covering so that no iniury to the person will occur in handlint the now finished product. It should he noted that power is applied only to the shaft 14 he means of the crank 23 or any other suitable means and. that the diagonally disposed wheels 47. the beveled discs 35 and the he ripheral slotted wheel 51 are all frictional v actuated when the core and cover are passed through the groove 21 in the wheel 18.
By the means iust described a core may be rapidly and efficiently covered with a Ill) minimum of effort and attention, and in practice the core material of semi hard rub ber carrying the member 69 and nails 72 is supplied upon reels and the covering material also supplied on reels in a continuous strip. A reel of the covering material and the core material are positioned adjacent the guide member 27 and the parts placed in position and inserted between the wheel 18 and the discs 47 after which there is required no further attention or operation out side of actuating the shaft 14. Th finished product after leaving the wheels 18 and 51 may have a suitable protecting means such as rope brought into contact with the upstanding nails 72 whereupon the cover, thus protected from damage by the nails, may be wound on to the reels for economical handling and shipping.

1., In a device for securing covering material upon a molding core carrying prongs on one face thereof, the combination with a guide means for receiving a strip of covering material and a core and for positioning said covering material about said core as the core and cover are passed through the guide, of a wheel having a peripheral groove for receiving the core and cover from the guide angularly disposed wheels mounted above the first mentioned wheel for receiving the co ered core between them and said first mentioned wheel, the angularly mount-- ed wheels having grooves therein permitting the prongs on the core to pierce the cover, and means for turning the prongs upon the cover whereby to secure the cover on the core.
2. In a device for securing covering ma terial upon a molding core carrying prongs on one face thereof, the combination with a guide means for receiving a strip of covering material and a core and for position ing said covering material about said core as the core and cover are passed through the guide, ot a wheel having a peripheral groove tor receiving the core and cover from the guide, angularly disposed wheels mounted above the first mentioned wheel for receiving the covered core betweenthem and said first mentioned wheel, the angularly mounted wheels having grooves therein permitting the prongs on the core to pierce the cover, means for turning the prongs upon he cover, and means to embed the turned prongs in the cover.

In a device tor securing covering material to a molding core carrying prongs and .iuountin nails on one face thereof, the comhiuation with a guide means for receiving a cover strip and a core and for positioning said cover strip about the core as the core and cover are passed through said guide, of a wheel having a peripheral groove for re oeiving the cover and core from the guide,
angularly disposed wheels mounted above the first mentioned wheel and Spaced from one another for permitting unobstructed i ot the nails between said angularly "deposed ii'heels, the angularly mounted wheels having grooves therein permitting the prongs on the core to pierce the cover, and spaced means co-operating with the firs mentioned means for turning the pron upon the cover.

In. a device for securing covering material to a molding core carrying prongs and mounting nails on one face thereof, the combination with a guide means for receiving a cover strip and a core and tor positioning said cover strip about the core as the core and cover are passed through said guide, 01' a wheel having a peripheral groove for receiving the cover and core from the guide, angularly disposed wheels mounted above the first mentioned wheel and spaced from one another for permitting unobstructed passage of the nails between said angularly disposed wheels, the angularly mounted wheels having grooves therein permitting the prongs on the core to pierce the cover, spaced means co-operating with the first mentioned means for turning the prongs upon the cover, and a peripherally slotted wheel adapted to co-operate with the first mentioned grooved wheel to embed the turned prongs in the cover.

In a device of the class described the combination with a grooved wheel for receiving a molding core having prongs and a cover for the core, 01 a pair of angularly disposed wheels mounted adjacent the grooved wheel and adapted to engage the covered core on the grooved wheel for torcing the prongs through the cover, beveled edged discs freely revolubly adjacent the pe riphery ot' the grooved wheel for turning the prongs upon the cover, and a clamping wheel mounted in radial alignment with the grooved wheel for receiving the curved core between itself and said grooved wheel whereby to embed the turned prongs in the cover.

In a device of the class described the combination with a guide means for receiving a cover strip and a core having prongs and for positioning the cover strip about the core, of a wheel having a peripheral groove for receiving the covered core, means mounted adjacent the groove in the wheel for causing the prongs to pass through the cover, revolub-le means mounted adjacent the periphery of the grooved wheel for ear gaging the prongs and bending said prongs upon the cover, and means co-operating with the grooved wheel for clinching the turned prongs upon the cover.

In a device of the class described the combination with a guide means for receiving a cover strip and a core carrying upturned prongs and upstanding mounting nails and for positioning the cover strip about the core of a Wheel carrying a peripheral groove in alignment with the guide means for receiving; the covered core there- :iroin means mounted adjacentthe groove in the wheel adapted to force the prongs through the cover, said means being; spaced to provide an unobstrneted passage for the mounting nails, sin'iilarly spaced means for turning; the prongs upon the cover a peripherally siotted Wheel adapted to clamp and turn n'ong's upon the cover, a nail guide for directing the upstanding: nails into the slot in the slotted Wheel, and means for actuating; the grooved Wheel whereby the cover strip and core may have performed upon them the operations in the order named.
8. In a device of the class described the combination with guide means for positioning a cover strip about a core having; prongs, of means engaging the cover and permitting the prongs to pierce the cover and means tor turning the prongs for securing the eover upon the core.
9. In a device of the class described the combination with a guide for receiving; a strip of cover material and a core having prongs, and for positioning the cover strip about the core, '5 anvil means having a :5 core therein for receiving the covered core, grooved means for engaging the covered core and pern'iitting the prongs to pierce the cover, and means for turning the prongs for se'iu-ing the cover to the core.
