REFRIGERATION.

To all rv-l1 am it may concern:
Be it known that I, HADLEY F. FREEMAN, a itizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Lakewood, in the county of (Iuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigeration, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;
My invention relates to refrigeration and lhe principal object of my invention is to provide means adapted to indicate exteriorly of a refrigerator the tem erat-ure existing within the refrigerator an to perform this result accurately and without interfering with or decreasin the eificiency of the refrigeration. In t e drawings accompanying this specification and forming a art thereof I have shown, for purposes of i1 ustration, one form which my invention may assume. In these drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a section of a refrigerator wall showin the application of this illustrative embo iment of my invention, while Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
The device herein shown includes a thermometer 11 comprising a stem 12 terminating at its upper end in an overflow chamber 13 and connected at its lower end to a bulb 14 filled with an .expansible fluid 15. present in such quantity that the expansion chamber 13 I will not be completely filled b thefiuid 15 at the highest temperature to w ich the refrigerator may be submitted even when not functioning, and that during normal operation of the refrigerator the top of the fluid column will stand at some point alon the central portion of the stem 12 and be visible through the lens 16 inserted in and closing an aperture 17 through both the outer plate 18. inner plate 19, and heat insulating material 20, o the refrigerator wall 21.
The thermometer 11 is secured in position upon the. wall 21 by means of brackets 22 and 23 surrounding the stem 11 and a bracket 24 underlying the bulb 14, and is protected from injury by a sheet metal shield 25 disposed about the thermometer 11, secured to the wall 21 by means of screws 26. and provided with a multiplicity of apertures 27 to provide free communication between the space about the thermometer 11 and the space within the refrigerator.
I! will be apparent from the above description that during functioning of the refrigerator the height of the fluid column in the stem 12, in coo eration with the usual graduations, will in icate the temperature existing within the refrigerator, and that this indication will be visible from the exterior of the refrigerator through the lens 16, that visibility of these indications exteriorly of the refrigerator is affected without interference with the operation of the refrigerator of decrease in the efficiency of this operation particularly because of the low heat conductivity of the lens 16 and tight engagement of this lens with the refrigerator wall 21, and that breaking of the thermometer at the greatly increased temperatures likely to be resent during non-functioning of the refrigerator is entirely prevented by the presence of the expansion chamber 13.
It will therefore be apparent to those skilled in the art that the device herein disclosed accomplishes the principal purpose of my invention. At the same time, it will also be obvious to those skilled in the art thatthe particular embodiment of my invention herein shown and described may be variously changed and mod fied without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing the advantages thereof. It will therefore be understood that the disclosure herein is illustrative only and that my invention is not limited thereto.
I claim: I
1. In combination, a. refrigerator wall provided with an aperture therethrough, a transparent'plug extending throughout sub-- stantially the entire thickness of said wall and closing said aperture, and a thermometer disposed adjacent the inner face of said wall with its bulb in communication with the space interiorly of said wall and its indicating portion disposed opposite said plug and visible through said plug from the space extcriorly of said wall.
