Description

llll
T'" 'il im ltletentett Sept,
it i Wt tra lill SCREEN FRAME,
Application tiled May 10, 1922.
To all 107mm it may concern.'
Be it known that l, linu'rs A. Konin a citizen ot the llnit'ed ltates. resid' 113; at l?hiladelphia in the county ot Philadelphia and State oi lennsylrania, have invented new and usetul improvements in tier-een Frames: of which the following is a specification.
This invention relaties to metal screens and frames theretor and it has more particular reterenee to that type ot trame for containing a screen of the usual diamond shape mesh to be applied to doors, Windows, or other similar openings. The primary object ot my invention is to provide a trame of the foregoing type composed oit separate parts or members which when the screen is inserted in proper relation thereto may be inseparably brought together and to the screen thereby forming` a complet@ strong', and unitary screen and trame structure that cannot be readily diszssemloled.
"With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention'oonsists essentially in the novel features ot Construction7 combination and arrangement oit parts hereinatter 'Fully described and more specifically detined by the appended claims.
ln the Jfurther disclosure et the invention reference is to be had to the aecompauyine; sheet of explanatory drawings eonstitutii a part ot this specilioation and. in which like characters ot reierenee designate the same or eorresmondinp` parts in all the views.
1Figure l is a 'liront elevation ol my deviee with the sereen and .'l'ralne assembleth a portion of the 'trame being-inkoken away and showing' the relation of the iframe to the screen.
Figure 2 is a perspective view ot a portion o'f the auxiliary flange or locking' member which co-operates with the main member.
Figure 3 is a perspective vieiv ot a portion ol the case or main trame member and illustrating its peculiar formation; and,
Figure l is a cross sectional view taken approximately on the line 2 2 in Figure l and showing' the relation of the parts as assembled with the clip stra-p or clamp member 'tor binding' the parts together.
lieten-ing .more particularly to the views the main trame member is'designated by the numeral l and it is 'formed troni a blank of sheet metal or other suitable material and it is bent when viewed in cross section of appropriately the shape of the letter C with Serial No. 559,850.
a flattened barok and an exaggerated extended base.
The secondary 'traine member is also termed troni a blank ol. sheet metal or other suitable material and it is bent When viewed in eross seetion to appropriately the shape ot the letter l.. Y i
A third member 53 is also iliorinedftrom a blank ot Vsheet metal or other suitable inaterial-and it is bent when viewed in cross section to appropriately the shape or the letter ll. '.lhis member 3 is substantially a clip strap or clamp member which is provided to bridge over the extended adjacent edges ot the annular members l and 2 at spaced intervals or whenthe trame is assembled and lined thereto to hold the parts `rigidly together and liorm a unitary strueture ot the tran'ie and screen.
The screen' 4 as shown in the drawing is a Wire screen o'l the diamond shape mesh or any other suitable soreen may be employed vwhich is of such construction that .it may be held iin clamped relation With the `two trame portions l and 2 when the screen and'lramo are assembled.
The main trame member l, is n'iore particularly tornied with a substantially vtlat side or Wall portion 5 and a lateii'ally extended anggrularly disposed r'lann'e or lip G `which proieets'ti'oin one side ot said side or Wall' portion with said lip portion 6 in a plane substantialli7 at rie-bt angles to the said Wall portion 5 From the opposite edge ot they base portion 5 there is 'formed another laterally extended angrularly disposed longitudinal 'flange portion 7, the upper portion ot which extends toward the opposite tlange portions 6 and it lies in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the side or Wall portion 5, thus making; the frame member l a more or less Channel-like Configuration.
The secondary frame member 2 is more particularly `formed with a substantially tlat -base portion 8 and a, laterally extended an- ,Qularly disposed longitudinal flange portion 9 projecting lrom one side thereoiC substantially at right anggles to the aforesaid portion i rllhe secondary trame, member 2 is oil such dimensions and the base and flange portions are so disposed in relation to each other that when the parts oi the trame are assembled in operative relation the upper face of the base 8 of the frame member 2 will lie adjacent to and abut against the inner face of the flange portion 7 vof the main frame meinber l; and it will be held firmly against said flange portion 7 while at the same time the flange portion 9 of' the member 2 will entend laterally adj aeent to the flange or li member 6 of the main Jframe member l in a plane substantially parallel to :the plane of the flange member 6 by being spaced slightly apa-rt from said flange member 6. rhe flange members 9 and 6 are spaced apart to permit the insertion between them of the screen el and as can be readily seen they are easj.' adjustable` toward or from each other so that screens of dillerent thickness can be accommodated by my style of rame i' irinly held therebetween with equal rac 'lhe members l and 2 are made or cut in any suitable lengths to conform to the opening to be screened and the abutting ends of the outer main frame member l where they are needed to ybe joined as in the case of the corner join-ts in the screen shown in Figure l they may be rigidly connected by brazing or spot-welding or in any other manner that will ensure unitary structure o'l the main portion .of the screen frame. The main lframe members which having been assembled and rigidly joined together as described yto malte the main portion of t-he frame a suitable screen l is inserted into said frame with a margin adjacent its edges resting on and supported by a lip portion (i of the main frame body l. The secondary frame members 2 are then inserted into the frame body 1 taking a position above and engaging the marginal portions of the screen and also engaging the main frame body l. The upper face of the base 8 of Vthe secondary frame member 2 when in position will engage and draw against the inner tace of the flange member 7 of the main frame member l, while the flange member 9 of the secondary frame member 2 will engage and rest against the marginal portions ot the screen l which is of course of such di inensions in reference to the main frame body as to substantially lill said frame body and provide suitable marginal portions for the secondary member to grip.
k'ilhe secondary trame member '2 being placed as described, I then bind the sti-ruc- .ture of frame members l and 2 and screen l carried thereby into fixed rigid relation making a practically unitary structure by means of theU-shaped clip straps or clamp members 8. These clip straps or clamp inembers 3 bridge over the extended adjacent edges o'f` the flange members 6 and 9 of the main frame member 1 and secondary member 2 and engage the opposite outer faces of these flange members `6 and 9, `the spaced points around `the length of said frame members thereby drawing the frame members l and r2 into firm gripping engagement with the screen l in order to hold the parts in rigid relation. The clip straps or clamp members 8 after being placed as d-eseribece are held in their desired position to clamp the whole assembled device in one uni ary `structure by being brazed7 spot-welded oi otherwise suitably secured to the main and secondary frames.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent to those acquainted with the art that the main advantages of injidericc a .e its durability and strength due to its l t construction, also the ease et as' L the parts together, while it will screen any size or shape ot openings by adapting the frame member lengths to the dimensions of the opening to be screened. Still further it is to be noted that while l have t escribed and shown the best form of my invention at present known to me the same is susceptible of' minor detail changes and the right is hereby accordingly reserved to make such changes and variations as fairly lie vwithin the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. 4ln a` screen 'frame the combination of a main frame member having a cross sectional base substantially corresponding to the letter C with an extended lower lip portion, a secondary substantially L-shaped frame member engaging inside the fla-nge at the inner portion of the main frame, and binding or clamping means engaging the lip portion of said main frame member and main'body of the secondary frame member to bind said members in rigid operative relation as a unitary structure.
2. In a screen frame the combination of a main frame member having a cross sectional base substantially correspondingto the letter C with an extended lower lip portion, a seconda-ry substantially Lshaped frame member engaging` and interlocking portion of the main frame, and a screen mounted on said main frame member and clamped in rigid relation thereto by and between said lip portion of said main frame member and the main body of the interlocking secondary frame member.
3. In ascreen the combination of a main frame member having across sectional base substantially corresponding to the` letter =C with an extended lower lip portion, a secondary substantially L-shaped frame meinber engaging and interlocking with a flange portion of said main frame, a screen mounted on said main frame lmember' between said :lip portion of said member and the interlocking secondary L-shaped frame member', and substantially U-shaped clamping means engaging the lip portion of said main iframe member and the main body of said secondary frame member for ylocking said members and screen in rigid operative relation es zi unitary structure.
4L. In a screen, n mziin frame oi? substantially C-shepe in cross section and provided with in outer iip disposed substantially zit right :ingles to the body of the freine, n securing` member of substantially L-shape in cross section and having its base portion engag-ing inside of the flange at the inner portion or' the main frame and co-operating therewith to provide n ruler-um for the securing` member, av piece of 'abrie having its edge portions secured between the iip or the mein frame and the mein body of the securing member, and means for securing said main body and the seid lip together.
