Be it known that I, THOMAS P. SHEEHAN, a citizen of theUnitedfStates of America, and a resident of N'o-rwichtown, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trumpet-Drive .Means for Carding Machines, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to trumpet drive means for carding machines, and more par# ticularly to that class of cards )wherein the side draw is preferably used. Y
An object of the invention is to establish a constant speed relation between the doifer comb and the trumpet, whereby a uniformity of delivery of the stock from the doffer roll to the trumpet is ensured, and a uniformity y of twist may be given to the stock as it passes through the trumpet. n
It is a further object of the invention to eliminate the well known and unsatisfactory trumpet drive belt, and. operate the trumpet by or through the same means that actuates the doffer comb. Y
It is a further object of the invention to accomplish the above results in such a simple and efficient manner that it may be applied A3.

Heretofore inside draw Vdevices of this class the doer comb'has beendriven through devices operated by a belt from the fancy shaft while the trumpet has been driven directly by a belt from the `main cylinder shaft. p
This arrangement is very unsatisfactory because of the fact that a constant uniform speed ratio cannot be maintained between the comb and the trumpet, dueto the use of two belts driven from separate sources.
It is a well known fact that it is ypractically iinpossible toy maintain `constant and uniform tension on the two belts and consequently slippage is apt to occur in one and not in the other, and the reverse is apt to occur at unexpected times.
So, too, if speed ratio between the. comb and trumpet Vhad to be change-dit necessitated a change of pulley andbeltifor one or the other, and in the caseof the trumpet i l drive the operation is laborious as the pulley therefor on `the main cylinder shaft is eX- tremely diiiicult of access.
Furthermore the breakage of belts is anotherbad feature to contend with, which the present invention reduces one half.
The improved trumpet drive requires the use of but one belt which is at present used to drive the doifer comb and which in turn is generally driven from the fancy. The invention further [consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood from a description of the drawings and the claims hereinafter given. v

Referring to the drawings: The drawings herewith show a sufficient portion of lone form of card to illustrate the application of the invention, but it will be yunderstood that itis not the intention to limit the invention to the exact construction and arrangementrherein shown as the same might be changed VwithoutV departing from its spirit and scope. e 'l As far as is known, in side draw mecha- `nism of thisclass, vmean'srto drive the trumpet by or through the comb drive devices, whereby a uniformity of speed ratio is maintained there between, has never been used, and therefore it is the intention to claim broadly, means to drive a trumpet at the desired spe-ed ratio, uniformly with the dofffer comb.
In the present instance it is desirab-le to use existing devices as far as possible so that the invention might be applied tocards at present in use at the leastk expense.
The drawings show a frame 1() which in practice suitably supports the several cylinders and rolls among them being a main cylinder 11 a doffer cylinder 12 and a fancy 13. These are or may be driven in any usual or suitable manner not deemed necessary to show.
The doffer comb 'shaft 14, which supports the comb 15, is mounted in lbearings in a casing 16, and a bracket 17, entering said casing, which encloses the bifurcated lever 18 fast to said shaft and the actuating crank 19 therefor. Said crank 19 has loose thereon the block 20 which engages said lever 18 and imparts vibratory movement thereto when the crank revolves. The shaft 21 of which the crank 19 is preferably a part, has fast at one end thereof the pulley 22 driven from the fancy 13 by the belt 23.
The structure above described is such as is used in certain side draw devices.
In the present instance the sha-ft 21 is eX- tended across the machine and finds a bearing in the bracket 17, adjacent which it has fast thereon a worm 24 in mesh with a worm gear 25 fast on a short -shaft 26 suitably supported in bearings 27. f
The trumpet 35 through which the stock is drawn by the rolls 30 and 31 is suitably revolubly mounted in a bearing 36 and held from longitudinal .movement therein by the collars 37 and 38.
Fast with the trumpet 35 is a worm gear 39 meshing with a worm 4() on the shaft 26.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the doifer comb 15 and trumpet 35 are -driven from the same source and consequently the speed relation between the two must be constant.
It will also be observed that but very slight change or addition has to be made to existing devices to obtain the advantages of the present invention.
The above described device is the preferred form but it is obvious that the drive there 'for may be derived from any convenient vsource other than the fancy if desired.
a ring 49, fast with the trumpet 35, which is surrounded by the member 48, between which spring pressed pins 50 are mounted in cam shaped notches of said member 48.
Movement of arm 45 in direction of arrow a will impart movement to clutch member 48 causing the pins 50 to wedge between the cam notches and ring 49 and turn the trumpet 35. Movement of the arm 45 in the 0pposite direction-causes release of said pins and no movement to the trumpet.
kThe vibratory movement of the comb shaft 14X4 is extremely rapid .while the rotary movement necessary for the triunpet is very much less, the diiference in some instances being as much as 11 to 1.
In o-rder to vary the relative movement between the comb and the trumpet the arm 45 is slotted so that the link 46 may be adjusted thereon to give greater or less throw tothe clutch member 48.
LIn the Vform just described the relative movement between the comb and trumpet may be regulated byv a change in one of the worms 24 or 39 or both if so desired.
Having described the invention I claim:
1. In a carding machine ofthe class described, a dofferv cylinder; a doii'er comb; means operated by said machin-e to actuate said comb; a trumpet; and means including said comb actuating means arranged to drive said trumpet.
2. In 'a carding machine of the class described, a doffer cylinder; a doifer comb; means operated by said machine to actuate said comb; a trumpet;.and means including Ysaid comb; a trumpet; and means including Said comb actuating means intermediate said comb and said trumpett0 drive said trumpet.
4. In a carding machine of the class described, a doer cylinder; a doffer comb;
means operated by said machine to actuate said comb; a trumpet; and means including said comb actuating means to drive said trumpet at diferent speeds in timed relation to said comb.
5. In a device of the class described, a. doffer cylinder; a doifer comb; means includinga shaft to impart vibratory movement to said comb; a trumpet; and means to impart rotary movement to said trumpet in fixed 'timed relation to said comb, said means receiving its motion from 'said vibratory movementl means.
6. In a device of the class described, a dolfer cylinder; ay doffer comb; a second shaft; means to drive said second shaft; means coacting with said second shaft to impart vibratory movement to said comb; a trumpet; means carried by said trumpet p and adapted to impart rotary motion thereto; and means moving in unison with said comb and adapted to actuate said last mentioned means to drive said trumpet.
7. In a carding machine of the class described, a doffer cylinder; a doffer comb adapted to be vibrated at high speed; a shaft; means operated by said machine to drive said shaft; means including a vibrating shaft coacting` with said shaft to impart vibratory movement to said comb; a trumpet adapted to be rotated at a relatively low speed; and means intermediat-e said vibrating shaft and said trumpet adapted to impart rotary movement to said trumpet7 said means including a friction clutch.
8. In a device of the class described, 'a doffer cylinder; a doffer comb; a rotary shaft provided With means to impart vibratory movement to said comb; means to drive said shaft; a trumpet; and link and lever connections between said comb and said trumpet and adapted to utilize the vibratory movement of said trumpet.
9. In a device of the class described, a dofer cylinder; a doffer comb; means to cause a vibratory movement to said comb; a trumpet; a clutch adapted to cause rotation of said trumpet in one direction; and means whereby the vibratory movement of said comb Will cause actuation of said clutch and trumpet.
10. In a device of the cla-ss described, a doffer cylinder; a doffer comb; means to cause vibratory movement to said comb including a rock shaft; a trumpet; a friction clutch lever carried by 'said trumpet; a lever fast' With .said rock shaft; a link connecting said levers and adapted to transmit motion from said rock shaft to said clutch lever; and means to adjust 'said link whereby the speed of said clutch lever may be regulated.
