AUTOMOBILE ARMREST.

Be it known that EDWARD' K. CORNELL and FRANK F. Lnwrs, citizens of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Armrests, of which the following is a specification.

l`his invention relates to arm rests for automobiles and the primary'object thereof is to provide an arm rest which is of simple and economical construction, and which can be easily folded, when not in use, so as to occupy ninimum space.

A further object of the invention is to provide an arm rest structure wherein the restproper is firmly held in operative position and in a manner to relieve the hinges of strain from the weight of the arm of the occupant.

In proceeding in accordance with 'the present invention a fixed or stationary mem-' ber l is employed which is of substantially rectangular form and which may be se cured to any point or part of the automobile body by means of screws 2 or equivalent fast-enings. The arm rest proper embodies a substantially rectangular member 3 of approximately the same length as member l which is hinged to the lower edge of the latter. The hin res have flat leaves 4 which are secured to the normally upper face of the member 3 to lie flush therewith and right-angular leaves 5 which latter as se'- cured to the rear face and bottom edge of the member 1 to lie flush with said rear face and bottom eda'e.

Asdepicted in Fig. 1 of the drawings, when member 3 is in unfolded or operative position, the rear side of the upper face thereof will underlap and hear against the bottom edges of the member 1 so that the weight of the arm of the user will be imposed on the member l and the hinges consequently will be relieved of considerable strain. Due to the right-angular formation of the leaves 5 of the hinges, the Vertical member thereof ill ;also distribute strain imposed on the leaves 5 to the rear face of the member 1.,

In order to hold the member 3 in folded or vertical position, as shown in F ig. 3, a slidable spring pressed catch or.latch 6 is secured to the member l and engages in a soclret or keeper 7 provided therefor in the outer side edge of the member 3. The member 3 is formed of such width so that the catch 6 may be secured to the front face of iember 1 below or flush with the top edge thereof while the keeper 7 is in the nature of a soelet mortised in the side edge of member 3, thus climinating projections when the parts are in either folded or unfolded position. As depicted in Fig. 3, when the parts occupy folded position, the members are in face to face engaqement, the catch 6 lying substantially flush with the adjacent face of the member 3, thus oocupying aminimum of space.

In an arm rest for automobiles, a vertical member formed for fixed see-urement to an auto-mobile body, a movable member underlapping the bottom edge of the Vertical member and engageable therewith to hold the movable member in horizontal position, hinges having` fiat leaves secured to the upper face of the movable member at points spaced from the rear side edge thereof and har-*mg right angular leaves secured to the rear face and bottom edge of the vertical member, a slidable catch on the front face of the vertical member and a mortised soclet in the outcr side edge of the movable member to receive the catch. r

In an. arm rest for automobiles,-a vertical member formed for fixed securement to van automobile body, a movable member underlapping` the bottom edgre of the vertical member and cngageable therewith to hold the movable member in horizontal position, hinges having* fiat leaves secured to the upper face of the movable member at points spaced from the rear side edge thereof and having right angular leaves secured to the rear face and bottom edge of the vertical member, and means to latch the movable member in vertical position.
