My invention relates to electric regal and has special relation to the vibiatoi tors type of regulator.
Tt is the object of the present invention to extend the working range 01" the regulator over wider limits than heretofore attained and to accomplish this result with greatly simplified apparatus.
It has heretofore been proposed to extend the operating range of the control relays .ot a so-called Tirrill regulator by including 0 in series relation with the relays a resistor which .is cut into the circuit by the action of an auxiliary electromagnet whenever the exciter voltage falls below predetermined point. Such a regulator is shown in the gap plication of A. A. Tit-rill, Serial No. 2(5736??? filed Dec. 20, 1918. Such an arrangement will permit an operating range oi one to tour for the regulator or, for example, the regulator will respond over a range or": 35 M volts when used in conjunction with a lEZS-volt exciter.
The present invention also contemplates connecting a resistor or other currentconsuming or impedance device in series rela tion with the operating relays. However, this resistoris controlled by means otan electromagnet connected in parallel relation with the operating relays. Thus this electroniagnet will vibrate at the same rate as the operating relays and will control the energization thereof in accordance with the ....ations in supply-circuit voltage.
Likewise, the electromagnet controls its own energization by reason of the parallel connection with the operating relayso't the regulator. It will thus be apparent that the range of operation of the regulator is er;- tended over wider limits by reason of the varying energization or the controllin-gelectromagnet for, theresistor in circuit with the operating relaysrof the regulator.
Referring to the drawing, the single figure is a diagrammatic illustration .of circuits and apparatus embodying my invention.
Thesystein to which the present inyention is illustrated as applied, comprises a main 5"" ierator 1 having an armature 2 and a field-magnet winding 3 connected to a suitable polyphase supply circuit comprising conductors 5 and 6. The field-magnet winding 3 has connected thereto an .exciter generator 7 having an armature 8 and a tieldanagnet winding Connected in circuit with the field-magnet winding-9 is an adjustable rheostat 11. The rheostat 11 is controlled through the operation of a regulator 12 which includes a main control vmagnet 13, a vibratory control magnet 14. and relays 15 and 16. The main control magnet 13 is connected across supply conductors l and 5 by means of a transformer 17.
The core armature 18 of the electromagnet 13 is connected to a floating lever 19 which, in turn, is connected to a bell-crank lever 21, pivoted at22. The core or armature 23 of the vibratingmagnet 14,: is connected to the bell-crank lever by means of a spring 24.. A. counterweight 25 is connected to the outer end of the bell-cranlt lever 21 to assist the pull of the main control magnet. Connected to the floating lever '19 is the vibratory contact member 26.
Contact member 26 co-operates with a stationary contact member 27 which is connected to one terminal of the armature 8 of the eXciter machine 7. The circuit which includes the vibratory contact member 26 em tends through the coils 2S and 29 of relays 15 and 16, respectively, and through a resistor 31, to the opposite terminal oi? the exciter armature 8.
Thus, any variations in the electrical condition of the supply conductors will vary the energization or" the main control magnets l3 and ll to produce a vibratory action of the main contact members '26 and 2". This action will intermittently energize the coils 28 and 29 of the operating relays 15 and 16 in accordance with the excitation of the main generator field magnet winding 8. The {la-ttmf actiom-in turn, vary the err ergization of the GIiCllJGl field-magnet winding to vary the excitation of the main generator field-magnet winding 3.
The foregoing apparatus and operation are similar in all respects to the structure and operation of the wcll-l-tnown Tirrill regulators.
It will be apparent that the energization ot the coils and of the operating rel ys 15 and 16 may be varied it the resistor 31, which is in circuit therewith, is var-let. la the present invention, this variation accomplished by the electromagnet 3'? which is an inverted elcctromagnet and, hence. operates in inversely proportional relation to the variations in the excitcr voltage.
It will be noted that the rfsistor 31 is in circuit with the energizing coil. oi the electromagnet 37 as well. in the circuit of the windings 2S and 29 of relays 15 and 16. Accordingly, the electromagnet 37, in addition to varying the energization of the windings of the operating relays, also varies the energization of its own winding. Hence, the range of operation of the rcgulator is extended practically indefinitely by reason of the varying energization of the energizing winding of the electromagnet controlling the extension of the operating range.
Modifications in the system and arrangement and location of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of my invention, and such modifications are intended to be covered by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. In a regulator of the field excitation of a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a device for controlling the variations of said field excitation having a wind ing energized in accordance with such variations, of a vibratory device also actuated in accordance with the variations of the tield excitation and controlling the degree of can ergization of said winding.
2. In a regulator for maintaining av constant voltage upon a supply circuit, the coinbination comprising contact members, a lever system CODDIOtQtl to said contact members, control magnets therefor, a plurality of relays controlled by said contact members, a resistor in circuit with said relays, and vibratory means for controlling said resistor.
3. In a regulator for maintaining a constant voltage upon a supply circuit, the combination (JOlllPl'lSlIlg contact members, control magnets therefor, a plurality of relays controlled thereby, a resistor in circuit with said relays and vibratory means for controlling said resistor.

5. In a system for maintaining a constant voltage upon a supply circuit, the combination with a dynamo-electric machine connected to said circuit, and an excitcr there for, of a regulator comprising a relay energized in accordance with the exciter voltage and vibratory means for extending the rang-: of operation of said relay actuated in accordance with the exciter voltage.
6. In a regulator, the combination comprising contact members, a lever system connected to said contact members, control magnets therefor, relays governed by said contact members having a resistor in circuit therewith, and a vibratory elcctromagnet for controlling a shunt circuit for said resistor.
7. In a regulator for governing the field excitation of a dynamo-clectric machine, the combination comprising elretrores-:ponsivo means govrrncd in accordance with said tield excitation having a resistor in circuittherewith and a vibratory electromaguet adapted to control a shunt circuit for said resistor.
8. In a regulator for maintaining a constant voltage upon a supply circuit, the combination comprising contact. members, a lever system connected to said contact members, control magnets therefor, a plurality of relays controlled by said contact members, a resistor in circuit with said relays, and an electromagnet connected in parallel relation with said relays and adapted to control the effective value of said resistor.
9. In a regulator, the combination comprising vibratory contact members, control means therefor, and a plurality of eleetroresponsive devices controlled by said contact members having a resistor in circuit therewith, one of said devices being adapted to control the effective value of said resistor in said circuit.
10. In a regulator, the combination comprising contact members, control means therefor, and a plurality of parallel-coniected lectroresponsive devices controlled by said contact members and having a resistor in circuit therewith, one of said deiocs being adapted to control a shunt circuit for said resistor.
11. The combination with a dynamo-electricmachine, an eXciter therefor having an armature and a field-magnet winding and a rhcostat in circuit with said winding, of a regulator comprising a vibratory relay energized in accordance with the eXciter voltage and adapted to control a shunt circuit for said rheostat, the periodicity of said relay being proportional. to the voltage of said machine, a resistor in circuitwith said relay, and an electromagnet adapted to vary the efiective value of said resistor in said circuit in inverse proportion to the periodicity of the first-mentioned relay.
12. The combination with a regulator, of means for extending the range of operation thereof comprising a resistor in circuit with said regulator and vibratory electroresponsive means for controlling said resistor.
13. In a regulator for maintaining a substantially constant voltage upon a supply circuit, the combination comprising electroresponsive means energized from a variable voltage source having an impedance device in circuit therewith and vibratory electroresponsive means also energized from said source for automatically varying the effective value of said impedance device.

In a regulator, the combination comprising electroresponsive means energized from a variable voltage source having a current-consuming device in circuit therewith and vibratory electroresponsive means for automatically controlling said device to determine the range of operation of said regulator.
15. In a regulator, the combination comprising electroresponsive means energized from a variable voltage source having a variable resistor in circuit therewith and automatic means for controlling the mean effective value of said resistor to determine the range of operation of said regulator.
16. In a regulator, the combination com prising electroresponsive means energized from a variable voltage source having a variable resistor in circuit therewith and vibratory means for controlling said resistor to determine the range of operation of said regulator.
17. In a regulator, the combination comprising contact members, electroresponsive means controlled thereby and vibratory means cooperatingtherewith for varying the energization of said first-mentioned mea s to determine the range of operation of said regulator.
18. In a regulator, the combination comprising switch mechanisu'i, electroresponsive means controlled thereby, and associated vibratory means for determining the oper ting range of said electroresponsive means.

The combination with a supply circuit, a dynamo-electric machine connected thereto having an exciter generator co-opera ing therewith, a regulator for maintainconstant voltage upon said supply circuit having an impedance device in circuit therewith, and vibratory means actuated in accordance with the eXciter voltage for controlling said device.
20. In a regulator for governing the field excitation of a dynamo-electric machine having a curren -consuming device in circuitwith said regulator, vibratory means adapted to control said device in accordance with said field-excitation.
21. The combination with a regulator, of means for extending the range of operation thereoi comprising a current-consuming device associated with said regulator, and vibratory means for controlling said device.
22. In a regulator for maintaining a substantially constant voltage upon a supply circuit connected to a variable voltage source, the combination comprising an electromagnet energized from said source having a resistor in circuit therewith, and vibratory means connected in parallel-circuit relation to said electromagnet for automatically varying the effective value of said resistor.
23. In a regulator for maintaining a substantially constant voltage upon a supply circuit connected to a variable voltage source, the combination comprising electroresponsive means energized from said source having a resistor in circuit therewith, and co-operating vibratory electroresponsive means connected in parallel-circuit relation to said first-mentioned electroresponsive means for automatically regulating the effective value of said resistor.
24. The combination with a regulator, of means for extending the range of operation thereof comprising a resistor in circuit with said regulator, and vibratory electroresponsive means connected in parallel-circuit relation to said regulator for controlling said resistor.
25. In a regulator for maintaining a substantially constant voltage upon a supply circuit, the combination comprising electroresponsive means energized from a variable voltage source having an impedance device in circuit therewith, and vibratory electroresponsive means connected in parallel-circuit relation to said first-mentioned electroresponsive means for automatically varying the ellective value of said impedance device.
26. In a regulator, the combination comprising electroresponsive means energized from a variable voltage source having a current-consuming device in circuit therewith, and vibratory electroresponsive means con nected in parallel-circuit relation to said first-mentioned means for automatically controlling said device to determine the range of operation of said regulator.
27. In a regulator, the combination comprising contact members, electroresponsive means controlled thereby, and vibratory means connected in parallel-circuit relation to said first-mentioned means or varying the energization thereof to determine the range of operation of said regulator.
28. In a regulator for maintaining a substantially constant voltage upon a supply circuit, the combination comprising electroresponsive means energized from a variable voltage source having an impedance device in circuit therewith, and electroresponsii-e means also energized from said source for automatically varying the etl'ective value of said impedance device at a ratio inversely proportional to the variations of said variable voltage source.
