IMPROVEMENT IN VENTlLATlNG-FANS FOR RAILROAD-CARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,416, dated September 29, 1874; application filed August 25, 1874,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRVING B. BROWER, of Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fan-Ventilators for (Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are representations of sectional views of my fan-ventilator.

This invention has relation to means for agitating and cooling the air in railway passenger-cars. r

The novelty consists in a fan having its bearings upon each side of a car, to which a horizontally vibrating motion is given by means of a connectingrod applied to the crank arm upon a vertical shaft, which is caused to rotate through the medium of cogwheels keyed thereon, and upon the shaft of the said car, when the traction of the engine causes the said shaft to rotate, as will be hereinafter morefully explained.

In the annexed drawings, A designates the body of a railway-car, mounted in the usual well-known manner upon the axles a of transporting-Wheels B. (J designates a fan-frame, preferably of wire, consisting of a rectangular rim, 0,-and a flat intermediate bar, 0. D indicates a rod, which is rcmovably applied to bar 0 of fan-frame O, and is then hooked into an eye, 6, of a rigid connecting-rod, E. This rod is connected by means of a crank-arm, f, to a vertical shaft, F, having its bearings upon the top and bottom of the said car, and preferably at one side thereof, where it will be comparatively out of the way. Upon the lower end of this shaft a downwardly-beveled cog-wheel, G, is suitably keyed, which engages with the teeth upon a second cog-wheel, H. This cog-wheel is keyed upon the upper end of a second vertical shaft, F, having its bearing upon the under side of the bottom of car A in a hanger, 9, both ends of which are rigidly secured to the said bottom, and it bears upon its lower end a second beveled cog-wheel, I, which engages with the cogwheel J, rigidly keyed upon the car-axle a;

When the car is carried over the rails of a road by the traction of the engine, or, in streetrailroads, of a horse, the shaft a will rotate, causing the cog-wheel J to actuate the shaft F through the medium of the cog wheel I upon its lower end. The rotation of this shaft will actuate the cog-wheel Gr through the action of cog -Wheel H upon the upper end thereof, whereby a rotatory motion will be imparted to the shaft F, giving a horizontally-reciprocating motion to the connecting-rods E e. The fan-frame, upon which may be stretched any suitable fanning-membrane, is thus caused to move to and fro, violently agitating and cooling the air, and greatly adding to the comfort of travelers.

With a view to preventing a casual disengagement of the cog-wheel G from the cogwheel H, I have used a helical spring, S, applied between the bottom of the car and the hanger 9, upon the lower end of the shaft F.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of the rods D E, crank f of shaft F, cog-wheels G H, shaft F, and cog-wheels I and J, the latter upon the axle a of a railroad-car, for the purpose of moving a fan, 0, to and fro, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the cog-wheels G H, of the coiled spring S, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination of the horizontally-vibrating fan 0, connecting-rods D E, and the vertical crank-shaft F, actuated through the medium of cog-wheel, as described.
