UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SPEROS' D. APOSTOL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CONDEN$ER Application filed March 10, 1925. Serial No. 14,533.
1 Improvements in Condensers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to condensers especially adapted for use in connection with radio.
Brieflystated, an important object of this invention is to provide a condenser wherein the rotor or movable element is in the nature of a substantially solid body having a transversely curved metallic element or plate which may be conveniently shifted in its position by the turning of the rotor from the exterior of the condenser.
A further aim of the invention is to provide a condenser which is dust-proof, simple to adjust, and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent during the course of the following description In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved condenser;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the same, the view being taken on line 8-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4: is a group perspective view of the invention.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 generally designates a base which is by preference more or less U-shaped and is provided with end Walls 6 through which the metallic shaft 7 of the rotor 8 is extended. It will be seen that the rotor is in the nature of a cylinder or roller and is provided about a portion of its periphery with a shallow recess for the reception of a transversely curved plate 9 of aluminum or other suitable material. Figure 2 plainly illustrates that a second plate 10 of insulating material is received in the recess in the peripheral portion of the rotor 8 and extends over the metallic plate 9 so as to space the same from longitudinal contact with what might be said to be the stator 12. The insulating plate 10 is flush with the periphery of the rotor 8 and may'have light frictional contact with the inner wall of the stator 12 whereby to hold the rotor in an adjusted position. That is to say, either the plate 10 or a portion of the rotor 8 will at all times have contact with the inner wall of the stator so that the rotor will remain in an adjusted position. At this point it might be stated that the rotor is preferably of wood and may, therefore, be manufacturedat an extremely low cost and in an expeditious manner.
The stator 12 is in the nature of a transversely curved or arched body of aluminum or the like and has one end permanently secured to the base by fastening devices 14, while the other end is detachably held against the base by one or more fastening devices 16. The fastening devices 16 are detachable so that the stator may be swung to open position for frequent inspection of the rotor and associated elements. The stator 12 extends to a point close to the end walls 6 so that dust is prevented from entering the condenser in large quantities and possibly interfering with the eficient operation of the same.
Figure 3 illustrates that a radial wire 29 is connected to the plate 9 and the shaft 7. In carrying out the invention one of the wires 18 may be connected to the shaft 7 in any suitable manner, while the other wire 19 is connected to the stator as indicated at 20. If desired, a dial may be mounted on one of the end walls so as to correctly indicate the position of the rotor and thereby aid in tuning the radio set'in connection with which the condenser is employed.
The improved condenser may be easily incorporated in a radio set and harmonized with the other elements employed, and as the device will remain in adjustment and be comparatively free from dust, highly efficient results may be obtained.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1. A condenser comprising a substantially solid cylindrical rotor of nonconducting material having the peripheral portion thereof formed with a shallow recess, a transversely curved plate received in said recess, a dielectric insulating plate covering said first named plate and having the outer surface thereof flush with the periphcry of said stator, a shaft supporting said rotor, and a stator of substantially U- shaped formation receiving said rotor and having light frictional contact With said second named plate andsai-d rotor; 2. A condenser comprising a substantially solid cylindrical rotor of nonconducting material having the peripheral portion thereof formed With a shallow recess,- a transversely curved plate received in said recess, a dielectric insulating plate covering said first named plate and havlng the outer surface thereof flush with the periphery of said stator, a shaft supporting said rotor, and a stator of substantially U-shaped formation receiving said rotor and having light frictional contact with said second named plate and said rotor, and a base having permanentconnectioli With one end of said stator and having detachable connection with the other end of the stator ivhereby the stator may be swung to open position. A condenser comprising a U-shaped base havingupstanding end Walls, a cylindrical rotor of non-conducting material arranged between said end Walls and having a shaft extending through said end Walls, said rotor being provided With a shallow recess extending for the major portion of its length, a plate received in said recess, a dielectric insulating plate received in said recess and extending over said first named plate, a stator permanently connected at one; end to said base and detachably connected at the other end to the base, said stator being of U-shaped formation and receiving said rotor, the outer surface of said second named plate and the surface of said rotor having light frictional contact With said stator to hold the rotor in an adjusted position, and an electrical conductor between said first named plate and said shaft.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
