OTIS W. WOOD, `0F SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORN'IILA.V
v AUTOMOBILE JACK.
Application led October 29, 1923. Serial No. 671,413.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OTIsW. VVooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county-ofSan Francisco 'and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile IJacks, of which the following is a specifica- `tion. y r
This invention relates to improvements in automobile jacks ofthe type such as comprise avwheeled frame supporting liftingk and loweringk mechanism and are used in 4garages and automobile repair shops for the purpose of quickly lifting and moving kinto various positions automobiles andy like vehicles. Y 'T v One of the objects of the invention is vto provide ajack of the lcharacter described Another object isto provide a novel op Vf eratingy mechanism fork the` jack, rkwhich mechanism includes a handlel that serves not` only as almeans for moving the jack bodily into. different positions but as `a means for operating the lifting andlowering mechanism,i'it being possible withthis arrangement, by grasping fa single element as a handle for moving the jack bodily to ,op"
erate the lifting and lowering :mechanism without removing thehand from said, element. Y
Another object of vide an automobile jack of the character described` Which'is constructed so that while the jack isbeing movedk into the desired o! With the above and .otheriobjects view,
the'inventionfurther consists in the combif nation of the elements of the' parts .thereof as illustrated in -the accompanying drawings, described in the accompanying speci-4 fication, yit being that minor changes in size, detail and proportion of the parts may be resorted to as required with-KA out departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the claims hereto appended. i
Referring to the drawings: l A
Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of a jackL constructed in accordance with my invention, said vehicle being broken for the sake of clearness 'of illustration.
Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary vertical sectional 'view mechanism. f
Fig. `3 represents a bottom plan view of a part ofthe housing for the lifting and of the lifting and lowering lowering mechanism.
Fig. 4 represents a front elevation of the handle and operating member u combined, belng shown'm part 1n section.
l Referring tothe embodiment of the in-v vention shown in the accompanyingfdrawings, there 1s provided a frame generally designated 1s which frame comprises a housing 2, supported by rollers fmounted on an axle 4 which is carried by the rear portion of the housing. Extending from` the `fore part of the housing is a tubular tongue 5,
`theforward portion of which tube supports an upwardlyy and outwardly curved bracket.
6. An upright bearing 7 is provided at the outer end of this bracket and receives the upright swivel pin 8 of a caster 9. On the upper portion of the bracket, 6 a short horizontal shaft 10 is journaled and at the outer end of this shaft is attached a sleeve 11 hav- Y ing pivot pins 12 projecting outwardly from opposite `sides thereof. Mounted on these pins and held in place by nuts 13 are the forked ends 14 of a combined operating lever and handle 15. On the other end of 1 this member 15l there is provided a short the invention' is to pro- Y crank 16. This crank 16 serves as a grip y when the member 15 is employed as a handle in moving the jack upwardly into different positions. It also serves as a means member is tubular and extends downwardly its upper end to a pointf spacedf above its" lower end and receives an auxiliary screw 27 which, 'suppoitsyanff elevator plate "28, this platel being adapted-to 4engage;l a portion ofk an automobile: ini` the lifting and lowering thereo.=V-The gear 19 is driveir-'by'a bevel pinion 29 which is fixed to one end ofa" shaft 30, which shaftextends out through a f. bearing Slvormed iirthei` upper part of the 'I housing and has auniversal joint connection i tends upwardlyiiand forwardly'to-the rear f end of the shaftl 10 :at-whichV point itis yconnectedwith ysaid shaft by universaljoint 34.'4 Thus it .will be seen that on,rotationfofthel slia'tY-lO,A the shafts 33 andlwill-befturiied so that tlie'pinionQS) Vw'ill'rotateftlie gear=20 and operate the liftingI and lowering mechanismw'i- As a fmeans for4 controlling fthefoperation" of the screw membersyhere isffprovidedfa* slidingdetent orkey 36 mounted ina sleeve 37 disposed in a bore 38'formed infthef--lower casting-1.7 This detentiiis*` inclined `and adapted! atvitsfoiwardfendwhich is pointed:y as at 39, .toengage inria verticalgroove 40 formed-in-thefmain screw124.` r,lieV keyrSG is normally lurgedin positionto engageriir said groove by anAeXpansionispring'4l mounted' within the; sleeve, one end of lwhich spring engages fai' shoulder-42orr'the key and the otherend l'ofwvhich efngagesgthe inner/end: of
