To .all whom t'mag/ concern.' v l"Be it known that I, BERNARD J.2GARN\nR-, aicitizen of the EUnited States, residing iat Cross fPlains, in the county. of LCallahan.:and State of Texas, `have invented certaindnew and uiseful Improvements in a Glamp,'of whichf the following lis la specification.
:The present invention relates to `an -im-l provement in clamps and is intended vfor use inholdingthe line `or cable to fwhich is attached the tools linfdrilling deep wells of every1 description. The: clamp Sis-` adapted to be suspended below the itemper `screw by linksya-nd is adapted-tolhold the line or cable so firmly thatthe Aweight-ofthe tools cannot slip the ilinefthrough it so that the Atool can only'des'cend as set out 'by the temperscrew.
An important objectofi the invention is "to provide-a clampx of this nature which isy eX- ceedingly simple Kin its yconstructiom satisfactory `in itsoperation", efiicient, reliable, strong, fdurable, -easy -to manipu'late, not likely to become easily outof orden-compact, `and `otherwise well yadapted tokthe purpose for'which'itis designed.
ithfthe'above and `numerous other fobjectsiin view as will appear Las the description proceeds, the inventionresides in'cer'- tain novel features of construction, land in thecombination and arrangement ofparts as -will fbe .hereinafter y'more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing -Figure j1 .is atop plan View of they clamp embodying the'features ofimy invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof showing one of the slips in section.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section through the clamp, and K Figure 4 is anotherl side elevation of the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numerals 5 designate a pair of jaws. The outer side edges of these jaws 5 are provided with notches 6. Transversely disposed slip receiving portions 7 are provided on adjacent ends of the jaws 5 andthe notches 6 are disposed closer to these ends of the jaws than to the other ends. The transversely extending slip receiving portions 7 are provided with outwardly extending curved hooks 8 at adjacent ends. The inner edges of the portions 7 are grooved longitudinally as at 9, eX- tending from the end provided with the hooks and terminating a slight distance from .the otherends-as is lclearly vshown in Figure a2. These groovesitaper from their bottom endsfupwardlysand receive similarly tapered slips 10 having =tlieir .upper vends 60, provided with transversely .extending aperturedv kears ll l.which are j positioned y over :the upper fends `of the portions -7 and held 1in place by screws 12,itheiline1or1cable 13 'is adapted lto be received `yin the grooves lof thel slips lOiintheusualfmanner. 2 .Thehooks Stof coufrse,.are adapted to'lbe :engaged :inthe links :suspended from 5.the temper isere-w,
.-'A' :yoke or substantially 'rectangu'larly shaped frame "134 is provided onits=end}por 70 tions with inwardly disposed 'fulcrums T15 adapted to be received inthefnotclies'aslis clearly shown in F igure3. .A pin .16='eX tends cent-rally and .transversely :across y'the yoke or frame 14 and has disposed thereon 75 a sleeve :or .roller :17 ifor engaging ztheiinner sides `:of 'the jaws .5 thereby fholding the notchesw in engagement awith ithe fulcrums and preventing f tlrevdisassembling of Ethe jaws .from '.the L-zyoke iuntil this ipin 16 isvso removed. v:The apin 16 is :preferably r held fin placeby Cotter fpins 18 :extending ,through the ends fthereofto 5the .outside of the longitudinal portions .of v.the rectangular @frame 154.1as will be 'evident froman .-inspectionof 85 Figures -1 and 4." .The fends 19 fofthe ijaws .5 are provided' with notches*20,;tl1e`entrances to which are= disposedl toward each other as may be '.seenin v'Figure l. Ascrewfblock 21 vis `xprovided "with voppositel'y Ldisposed 9o trunnionsz22.- receivable iin the notches: 201 on one end 19 while a seat block 23 has its oppositelyr disposed trunnions 24 receivable in the other notch 20. The trunnions 22 and 24 are held against displacement from the 95 notches 20 by cotter pins 25. The screw block 21 is provided with a longitudinally extending screw threaded bore for receiving a T-screw 26. The seat block 23 is provided with a seat 27 for receiving the end of the 100 T-screw 26 which is preferably pointed for seating in the recess 28. A spring 29 is attached to the outer end of the screw block 2ly and as at 30 and to an intermediate portion of the adjacent jaw 5 as at 31 and tends 105 to swing the inner end of the block 21 outwardly so that the end of the screw 26 will be properly seated in the lock 23.
By turning the screw 26 so that it will clamp the lineor cable 13 between the slips 10. If for any reason it should be desirable, the screw 26 can be slightly loosened so as to let the clamp slip. This is desir-.
- merely by way of example and attains all the features of advantage enumerated as desirable inthe sta'tement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that numerous changes in the details of construction, in the sizes, and the materials, in the combination and arrangement of parts as may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l.v In a clamp of 'the class described, a rectangularly shaped yoke having its ends provided with inwardly extending fulcrunis, a pair of jaws having their outer edges provided with notches vfor receiving the fulcrums, a pin extending transversely of the yoke and engaging the inner edges of the jaws for holding the notches 'thereof in engagement withthe fulcrums, a screw block pivoted in one end of onejaw, a seat block pivoted in the same end of the other jaw, a screw threaded through the screw block and engageable in the seat block, and slips provided 1n the other ends of the jaws.
2. In a clamp of the class described, a rectangularly shaped yoke having its ends provided with inwardly extending fulcrums, a pair of jaws having their outer edges provided with notches for receiving thefulcrums, a pin extending transversely of the' yoke and engaging the inner edges of the jaws for holding the notches thereof in engagement with 'the fulcrums, a screw block pivoted in one end of one jaw, a seat block pivoted in the same end of the other jaw, a screw threaded through the screw block and engageable in the seat block, the other ends of said jaws being provided with transversely extending slip receiving portions having their upper ends provided with outwardly and downwardly curved hooks and their inner edges provided with tapered grooves, tapered slips receivable in said grooves.
` 3. In a clamp of the class described, a rectangularly shaped yoke having its ends provided with inwardly extending fulcrums, a pair of jaws having their outer edges provided with notches for receiving the fulcrums, a pin extending transversely of the yoke and engaging the inner edges of the jaws for holding the notches thereof in engagement with the fulcrums, a screw block pivoted in one end of one jaw, a seat block pivoted in the same endof the other jaw, a screw threaded through the screw block and engageable in the seat block, the other ends of said jaws being provided with transversely extending slip receiving portions having their upper ends'provided with out wardly and downwardly curved hooks and their inner edges provided with tapered grooves, tapered slips receivable in said grooves, said slips provided with lateral extensions at their upper ends provided with openings, and screws extending through said openings into the upper ends of the portions.
In testimony where f I aliix my signature.
BERNARD J GAR-NER.
