Description
Patented Sept. l5, 1925.
ENA JAMES DION AND FRED C. DION, 0F TURNERS FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS.
Application led May 6,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, ENA J. DION and FRED C. DION, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Turners Falls, in the county of Franklin'and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reamers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reamers, and more particularly to spiral expansion reamers.
, An object of the invention is the provision of a spiral reamer that may be expanded or adjusted.
A further' object is the provision of a reamer formed of a body having tapered slots and tapered blades arranged in said slots, said blades beingy adjustable longitudinally of the body to expand or contract t c reamer.
A further object is the rovision of a reamer having slots arrange at an angle to its longitudinal axis and blades mounted therein, the blades being provided with spiral cutting edges. e
In the accompanying drawings, we have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure 1 is a plan. view,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal' section,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3 3 of Figure 1, and,
Figure 4 is a perspective. view showing one of the blades removed.
Referrin to the drawin the reference numeral 1 esignates the bo y of the reamer which is provided with a reduced shank 2. This shank is provided with slots 3, arranged at an angle to the longitudinal axis ofthe tool, the ends of the shanks are p vided with reduced threaded Vportions 4. The intermediate portion widened at their upper edges, as indicated at 5. As shown, (see Figure 2) the bottom wall 6 of the slot tapersinwardly toward the outer end of the tool. A blade 7 is adapted arranged in each of the tapered slots and these blades are provided with tapered lower faces 8', as shown, corresponding to the taperof the bottom ,wall 6 of the side elevation, partly in j 1922. seriaim. 558,993.
slot.` The upper portion of the blade is of greater width than the lower portion, being provided with lateral extensions 9 which are received in the upper, widened portions 5 of the slot to furnish a bearing surface. As shown, the blades are straight and are providedV with spiral cutting edges 10. The ends of the blades are inclined as at 11, and are adapted to be received in the ends of nuts 12, arranged on the Ythreaded portions of the shank. The engaging faces of these ends as inclined as indicated at 13 to retain the blades in position. The nuts may be provided with suitable openings 14 for the reception of a tool or sharp instrument to permit loosening and tightening of the nuts. A lock nut 15 is arranged adjacent the inner end 12.y f
In operation, the blades are arranged in the slots in the usual manner and the widened portions 9 of the blades rest in the upper portions 5 of the slots, furnishing an effective bearing to prevent displacement of the blades. The ends of the blades are retained in position in the usual manner by the endsV 12. To expand or contract the rezner, the blades are ad'usted longitudina y vtightened 1n the adjusted employed which,
owever, are provided with spiral cutting edges, producing a spiral expansion reamer.
It is to be understood that the form of our invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the sub# joined claim.
Having thus described claim: t
A rearner comprising a body portion having inclined slots and reduced threaded portions adjacent the ends of the slots, the upper portion of each of said slots being of greater width than the lower portion, blades arranged in said slots the lower edges of said blades being inclined corresponding to our invention, we
the inclination of said slots, said blades beinner faces of each of said retaining nuts ing provided With lateral extensions adaptbeing inclined to receive the inclined ends 10 ed to be received in the upper portions o of the blades. y
the slots, and being further provided with In testimony whereof, We alix our signaspiral cutting edges,l said blades being protures.
vided with inclined ends, and retaining nuts n arranged on'the threaded portions of said ENA JAMES DION. rearner adjacent the ends of the slots, thel FRED C. DION.
