Be it known that I, JAY J. HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines, of which the following. is a specification.
This invention 1s designed to improve washing machines of the beater type and is along the lines of a structure described in an application now pending by. me, Serial Number 668,545, filed Oct. 15th, 1923, in which a beater carrier is given an orbital movement creating an oscillatory movement of beater cups. With the present invention the carrier is locked against rotary move- 'ment relatively to the tub and this is accom 'plished in a simple and efficient manner through a. protected mounting. The invention involves the sealing of the operating mechanism, a quick release for the beater and carrier, and a simplified arrangement of the driving mechanism. Other features and details of the invention will appear from the specification and claims. 7 W

Beater cups 9, preferably of the vacuum type, are secured to a. carrier 10, there-being a plurality of these cups ordinarily five, secured to the carrier. The carrier .is mounted on a shaft 11. at its ends but is locked against rotation. The lower'end of the shaft is journaled in an opening 14 .in a crank arm 15 on a vertibal shaft 16 journaled in the driving casing 7. "A cap 17 is arranged on the upper end of the housing. It has a sleeve 18 fixed in it in, which are bearing sleeves 19 in which the shaft 11 is journaled, Wheels 20 are journaled on pins 21 extending downwardly from the top, the wheels being held in place by washers 22 locked on the pms by cotter pins 23. The wheels 20 are at opposite sides of a vertical plane extending throughthe shaft 11. Their only function is tomaintain the cap 17 in axial alinement with the housing.
The cap. is sealed on the housing by a flexible flap 24. preferably of oiled leather or similar material and this is secured on a surface 25 at the underside of the cap by a clamp 26 which is secured by screws 27. A coiled spring 28 extends entirely around the cap directly over the-flap and is tensioned against a cam surface 29, the effect of which is to' urge the coil springs downwardly on the flap and to yieldin ly press the flap against a flange 30 on the upper end of the sleeve 4.. Thus there is maintained a water tight joint at the u er end of the housing with very little" rictional resistance.
The carrier is detachably mounted on the upper end of the shaft by the following mechanism: A cap 31 is secured to the upper end of the shaft by a pin 32 and the cap forms a'housing over the bearing sleeve -19. The carrier has a thimble 33 secured in a head 34. This is secured by means of rivets 33' having extensions 33 which extend through. openings 31 in the cap 31, thus locking the carrier a ainst rotation.
There are preferably a num er of holes 31 I so that all that is necessary is to drop the carrier in place and give it a slight rotation to bring the ends 34" into register with the openings 31. The head 34: has a projection 35 on which a lever 36 is pivotally mounted'by means on pin 35. The lever is bifurcated, the armsextending each side rier can be more firmly seated on the cap.-
The washer is driven by an electric motor suspended from the frame 5. A motor shaft 46 has a worm 47 engaging a worm gear 48.

The gear 53 has clutch dctents 54 adapted to operate with a sliding jaw clutch element 55 slidingly mounted on the shaft 16 and locked against rotation thereon by a spline 55. The clutch element has the usual groove 56 in which is arranged a collar 57. A. forked lever 58 engages the collar and is mounted on a shaft 59. The shaft extends crosswise to the side.

It will be noted that the housing 8 is closed by the bottom 8 and that the frame 7 entirely encloses and houses the gears. 24. In a washing machine, the combination of a tub; a main frame on which the tub is mounted; a drivin frame on the main frame; a housing carr ed by the driving frame and extending upwardly into the tub;
a heater carrier in the tub; an orbital mount ing in the housing for the carrier; beaters v on the carrier elevated and depressed by the movement of the carrier; and means acting through the driving frame for driving the carrier through the mounting.

In a washing machine, the combina= tion of a tub having sides, a bottom, and an upwardly extending sleeve; a main frame onwhich the tub is mounted; a driving frame mounted on'the main frame; a hous-' ing extending upwardly from the driving frame within the sleeve; a beater carrier; an orbital mounting for the carrier in the housing; heaters on the carrier elevatedand depressed by the movement of the carrier; and means in the driving frame for driving the carrier.

In a washing machine, the combination of a tub; an upwardly extending housing in the tub; a beater carrierwithin the tub; an orbital mounting for the beater extending into the housing, said housing being grease tight and capable of carrying a lubricant for the mounting and beaters on the carrier elevated and'depressed by the orbital movement of the carrier.
