Application filed September 7, 1922. Serial No. 586,600.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN B. ENG- LANDER and PERCIVAL B. BEBRY, both citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,
I in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glide Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to couch or glide hammocks or the like, and particularly to structures of this character which are designed and adapted for the purposes of sleep or rest, an object of the invention being to provide a swing or hammock of this class wherein the couch seat or bottom is'supported for swinging movement in a novel and improved manner, and wherein a novel organization of parts is produced thereby resulting in the provision of a more compact,
'20 more attractive, simpler and more economical structure, which at the same time will afford maximum comfort to the user.
A further object of this invention is to provide a couch or glide hammock wherein the couch' or hammock seat is suspended by swinging means located entirely beneath the seat and connected to a supporting frame-- work or stand, which is also located beneath the seat, the hammock seat preferably being at least as long as the frame or stand, or
overlying the ends of the frame.
A further object of this invention is to provide a couch or glide hammock wherein the couch seat has arm-rest or wind-shield ends constructed, for instance of wicker, and swingingly supported by means of a stand or stationary frame located between the end members.
A further object of this invention is to provide a couch or glide hammock wherein the couch seat is provided with arm rests s'hiftable therewith, and is swingingly supported. by 'a stationary stand located between the end members, the means for accomplishing this swinging-movement comprising a plurality of pairs of hanger links, the links of each air being pivoted together and to the stand and arm-rest ends respectively.
wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a A further object of this invention is to prov1de a glide couch or hammock comprising a couch seat having wicker end members,
the latter having connected thereto means for supporting the seat and also having con- I nected thereto means for swingingly suspending the seat beneath the latter.
A further object of this invention is to provide a glide couch or hammock wherein, the couch seat or bottom has depending ends embracing therebetween a supporting stand, from which the seat is swung, the construe-1 tion being such as to permit the seat to swing in a path above the stand.
A further object of this invention is to provide a glide couch or hammock comprising a supporting stand for shiftably or swingingly supporting a couch seat, and a fixed or stationary treadle or foot rest di rectly connected to the stand for operating the couch seat.
In the present instance this treadle or footrest is adjustably supported and is also detachably connected to the supporting stand so as to permit, if desired. the couch to be utilized without the treadle or to be readily dismounted.
A further object of this invention is to. provide a glide couchor hammock comprising a couch seat or bottom, and u right arm rests or wind-shield ends having a stationary frame therebetween and over 80 which frame swings the couch seat, the latter being swung by means ofhanger linkspivoted to the arm-rest ends.
Other objects of this inventionwill appear in the following description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several views and glide hammock or couch embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is affront elevation thereof part y in sectionig. 3 is a rspective view of the couch or bed bottomf l ig. 3 is a detail view of parts of the framework; Fig. 4 1s a perspective view partly infl ction the couch or hammock is provided which illustrating the several operating parts with having therebetween a spring fabric 25. 65

In the drawings we have illustrated a present preferred embodiment of our invention, and it will be understood that we do not intend to limit ourselves to the present various structural details, arrangements, design, or construction except in so far as limited by the prior art, and that the several novel features of this invention are still considered as embraced within the scope of our invention irrespective of whether such features are embodied in other structures or relations. A supporting framework for may comprise a pair of upright end frames 9 and 10, each formed in the present instance from' a pair of vertically spaced angle bars 11 and 12 connected together by means of angle bars 13 and 14. The cross bars 11 of these frames are adapted to rest upon the floor andthe frames are separated or spacedlongitudinally by means of lengthwise extending side bars 15 and 16. the latter having at the end of each an upright angle bar 17 secured thereto and braced by means of angular straps 17*. These members 17 are detachably connected to the upright members 13 and 14 by means of headedpins 22 carried by the members 17 and cooperating with slots 23 formed in the flanges of the members 13 and 14. Thus a rigid supporting stand is provided, which comprises a. pair of upright frames spaced apart and detachably connected together by means of the connections hereinbefore described.
In the present instance the couch seat or bed bottom is supported above the end frames 9 and 10 for swinging movement by means of a pair of links located preferably at each corner of the supporting framework. These link connections comprise each a depending hanger link 19 pivotes at 20 to the horizontal bar 12 and bent to extend outwardly and downwardly from the upper end of the framework and pivoted at 21 to a hanger link or end member 20. The companion hanger links or end members'20 at each end of the bed are braced and firmly connected together by means ofa cross bar 18. and it will be noted that each pair of cooperating links 19 and 20 are pivoted together at their lower ends. The several connections 21 are preferably detachable connections so as to permit the disengagement of the links 20 from the links 19. These detachable connections each comprise headed pins and slots, and pivoted dogs 21 may be provided for normally preventing. the accidental disengagement of the pins from the slots.
The couch or hammock seat in the present instance comprises the usual framework 24 The side bars forming this framework are preferably extended and bent to form depending members 26, and by means of detachable connections carried by these depending members 26 and the links 20 the bed bottom 24 may be readily attached to and detached from the links 20. These detachable connections may be of any suitable character, and in the present instance by way of example, they comprise pairs of vertically spaced headed pins 27 carried by each hanger link 20 and pairs of slots 28 carried by each depending member 26, into which the pins 27 are adapted to have a sliding'and interlocking fit. In order to prevent the accidental disengagement of the bed bottom from the links or members 20, pivoted locking dogs 29 may be provided, and which as shown in Fig. 2. are normally adapted to project over the side bars of the bed bottom and prevent the detachment thereof.
The present glide couch is provided with arm-rest end members, which are preferably constructed of wicker and also to form rigid wind-shield 'ends combining utility and attractiveness. These wicker ends 30 are secured to the end frames 18, 20 in any suitable manner. and these arm rest end members and link end members are preferably in the present instance shiftable with the couch seat. It will be particularly noted however that the end members form a facile and efficient medium for swingingly supporting the couch or hammock seat, such supporting means comprising hanger links 19 pivotally connected to the inner sides of the end members. The wicker ends are preferably constructed from av tubular metallic bar bent intermediate its ends to form a transverse arm rest member and depending members, and the wicker orsimilar material is woven around the bar and crosswise between the depending members thereby forming strengthened ends, the construction being similar to that disclosed in our co-.
pending application Serial No. 578,301 filed I July 29. 1922.
For the purpose of operating or swinging the couch seat, the present structur is preferably provided with a normally fixed or stationary treadle 31. This treadle may be constructed in any suitable manner, and in the present instance is provided with rearwardly extending bars 32 having' pins 33 adapted to extend into holes in the ends of the floor bars 11. The extensions 32, due to their resiliency, may be contracted somewhat in order to spring the pins 33 into the holes in the bars 11. Thus, a spring or tension joint is provided for connecting the treadle 31 to the supporting stand, which joint forms a pivot about which the treadle may be adjusted into various positions to suit the desire .of the occupant. The adjustment of the treadle is obtained by means of adjusting bars 34 having a series of slots 35 adapted to selectively cooperate with headed pins 36.
hen desired, the present glide couch or hammock may be provided with a back 37, which in the present instance comprises a suitable upholstered franie including a lengthwise extending bar provided with bent hooks 39 adapted to releasably extend into slots 40 formed in the rear side bar of the bed bottom. These bent hooks and slots form a hinged connection for permitting the adjustment of the back, such adjustment being accomplished by means of chains 41 and hooks 42 connected to the wicker end members 30. A stuffed mattress 43 is carried by the spring bottom 25.
In operation it will be readily seen that swinging or oscillating movement may be imparted to the couch seat and arm-rest end members when the occupant is sitting in thehammock and exerting pressure with his foot against the treadle or foot rest 31. Asa result of such pressure the seat will swing above the supporting stand or framework by means of the link connections '19 and 20. During this movement the links 19 have a swinging movement, whereas the links 20 have a sidewise shiftable movement with the'wicker ends 30 and the couch seat. It will be seen that the wicker end and couch seatpractically entirely enclose the framework so that the latter is hardly visible from the outside. The stuffed mattress 43 may be provided with a front depending curtain 44 for concealing the framework at the front of the couch. It will be understood of course that the back 37 may be removed when it is desired to use the hammock without a back, and if desired the arm rest ends may be constructed of wood or other suitable material.
It will be observed that in the present structure the arm rest ends to which the seat is connected are higher or extend above the stationary frame to which they are connected, and by reason of the peculiar organization shown and described this obviates the necessity of a frame work extending above the ends of the glide hammock itself and thus permits the seat not only to swing or glide above the supporting framework but together with the ends the entire supporting frame work is concealed at the ends thereof, and thereby obviates all liability or danger of injury to the user such as by getting his hands or clothing caught in any of the movable parts. Thus in this instance the arm restends and not. the supporting frame work are the only ends that are visible. It will also be noted that the seat glides or swings preferably above the points of connection 20 of the seat to the supporting frame.
It is. to be understood that by the term wicker, as herein used is meant a material of that general character such as reed, fibre, cane, basket work, etc., which may be readily woven and which, for convenience may be generally termed wicker.
It will be understood that by describing in detail herein any paiticular form, structure or arrangement it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the several claims or the requirements of the prior art.
