To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Magdalena, in the county of Socorro and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Sash Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to builders hardware particularly to sash holders, and has for its object the provision of a novel device adapted for use upon a sliding window sash for the purpose of holding it in any desired position and preventing it from being either lowered or raised, the device consequently acting to prevent the entrance of burglars or other unauthorized persons.

Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is equally well adapted for use in connection with sashes equipped with weights and those which are not equipped with weights, in the latter 1nstance the device taking the place of weights.

An additional object is the provision of a holder of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to install, positive in action, efficient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and ad,- vantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a face elevation of a window sash and frame showing my device in applied position for preventing raising of the sash,

Figure 2 is a similar view showing the device arranged for lowering of the sash,

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device detached,

Figure 4C is a vertical section through one stile of the sash showing an elevation of the device.

Referring more particularly to the drawings the letter A designates a window casing and B rep-resents the side rail or stile of a sash slidably mounted therein. In carrying out my invention I provide a stud screw, bolt or the like 10 secured to an projecting from the inside face of the rail or stile B. In conjunction with this element I make use of a trapezoidal shaped plate 11 formed with an elongated slot 12 for the accommodation of the stud. At one end this plate is formed with an .upstanding finger piece 13 whereby it may be manipulated and at the same end it is formed with a projection 14 to which is connected one end of a coil spring 15 which has its other end connected with the stud 10.

Assuming that the device is constructed and mounted as above described and as shown in Figure l of the drawings, it will be apparent that if any attempt is made to raise the sash, the stud 10 endeavoring to travel along the slot 12 will exert a wedging effect which will bind the plate so firmly and closely against the window casing so as to positively prevent any movement.

If the device be arranged as shown in Figure 2, it is apparent that the reverse is true so that the device will act to hold the sash at any desired adjusted position. To effect release in either instance, it is merely necessary for the operator to press the finger piece 13 away from the stud, whereupon the binding action will cease so that the sash may be moved.

From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simple, inexpensive, easily applied and easily operated automatic sash holding device which will serve to hold a weighted sash at any desired position and which will also operate to hold any kind of sash against u-pward or downward movement as the case may be depending upon the position in which the holder is placed.

WVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the sub-joined claim.

I claim:

A device of the'character described comprising a trapezoidal plate member formed at one end on one side with a transversely extending rib, said plate member being formed with a slot terminating short of the other end and terminating at the rib,

the under side of the plate being formed at the rib With a groove eomnnmioating with the slot and coextensive therewith, an outstanding lug on the ribbed end of the plate located in obstructing relation to said groove, a securing member extending through the slot and having a portion bearing upon the outer face of the plate, a

spring secured to said securing member and to said lug, and the ribbed end of the plate being formed With an upstanding finger piece arranged at a point above the slot.
