To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. SCHELTER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements `in Lasts, of which the following is a specifin cation.
The present invention relates to lasts and more particularly to the type in which there is provided a fore part and a heel part connected together to permit the collapse of the last, provision being made whereby the last may be locked in its expanded condition. An object of this invention is to provide an improved bonding means which will not require the weakening of the last parts for its use. Another object of the invention .is to mount the locking member on one of the last parts to cooperate with an abutment on the other and to provide on such other last part a holding means which will hold the locking member in unlocking position until the last is collapsed when it will free the locking member to permit it to cooperate with they abutment on the next expansion of the last. Still another obj ect of theJ invention is to provide a tubular bonding member with a retaining pin holding it to one of the last parts and forming a pivot for a locking member operating through a slot in the tubular bonding member. Still another and further object of the invention is to provide a tubular bonding member with an arched portion which serves as an abutment for a locking member on the other last part.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring first to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4,1 indicates the fore part and 2 the heel part of the last. These parts are connected together by a bonding means, embodying, in this instance, a tubular member 3 fitted in a bore 11 in the heel part and a tubular member 5 fitted in the bore 6 of the fore part, the tubular member 3 being secured to the heel part by a pin 7 and apivot pin 8, while the tubular member 5 is secured to the fore part by a pin 9, the rear end of the tubular part 5 being bifurca-ted and lying on opposite sides of the forward end of the tubular member 3, arms 1() of the bifurcated portion being pivoted on the pin 8. These arms 10 are connected by an arched portion 11 which is curved over the forward end of the bonding member 3 to provide an abutment 12.
In order to lock the last in an expanded condition, a locking means is provided preferably in the form of a locking member or detentl 13. This locking member is, in this instance, pivoted on `the retaining pin 7 and to this end is provided with an elongated opening or slot 14 which surrounds said pin. The locking member also has an abutment or shoulder 15 which, when the detent is in its uppermost position will cooperate with the abutment or shoulder 12 on the arched portion 11. The bonding member 3 is slotted at its top wall, so that the locking member or detent 13 may swing through the top wall in order to engage said abutment 12. A spring 16 seated at one end on the bottom wall ofthe tubular bonding member 3 acts on the detent to move the latter upwardly and also rearwardly so that the forward end of the slot 14 has a tendency to lie against the retaining pin 7. i
With the end in view of holding the locke ing member or detent out of locking position, after it has been depressed away from such position, there is provided, in this in` stance, a forward extension or projection 17 on the locking member which has a locking recess 18 in its under side for cooperating with aholding pin 19 extending between the arms of the arched portion 11, the projection 17, when the locking member is in its upper position, cooperating with the under side of the arch to limit the upward movement of the locking detent and,
when the locking detent is depressed, the under side of the projection will engage beneath the holding pin 19 as illustrated in Fig. 2 to hold the detent in lowered position, the spring 16 acting on the detent to maintain this engagement between the latter land the holding pin 19. This holding pin is eccentric with reference to the pivot 8 of the last and is not on the last part on which the detent 13 is mounted. As a result, when the last is collapsed, the detent is moved forwardly so as to pass out of engagement with the holding projection 19, `the spring moving said locking detent upwardly in engagement with the arched portion 11, as shown in Fig. 3, so that when the last is again expanded, the detent will ride in engagement with the under side of the arched portion, until the shoulder 15'can engage with the abutment 12 as illustrated in Fig. 1.
' In the embodiment illustrated in Figs, 5 to 7, the fore part 1 and the heel part 2 are provided with bores 6 and et, respectively. The bonding means embodies a tubular member 3 Varranged in a. bore l of the heel part 2 and a tubular member .5 arranged in the bore 6 of the fore part 1. The tubular bonding member 3 is secured by a retaining pin 'Z and a pivot pin S which is also anchored in the heel part 2. rI he tubular bonding member 5 is secured by a retaining pin 9 and has a bifurcated end, whose arms 10 turn on the. pivot pin 8, these arms in turn being connected by an arched portion 11 which is formed with an abut-ment 12. These parts are substantially the same as the parts shown in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to t and are given the same reference characters.
The locking member o-r detent 13 has an elongated slot or opening 14 through which the retaining pin 7 passes to act as a pivotfor the locking member. This locking member also has a shoulder or abutment 15 which cooperates with the abutment 12 to hold the last in an expanded condition. A forward extension 17a is provided on the locking detent 13 and this extension depends in front ofthe pivot pin 8, the rear surface of the extension having a projection 17b with surfaces 17 and 17d on opposite sides thereof. The forward side of this depending extension is provided with a recess 17e and two bulged or slightly projecting portions l'i'f and 17g on opposite sides of this recessed portion. The recessed surface 17c above the projection 17b is adapted to engage in front of the pivot pin 8 when the detent 13 is depressed to the position shown in Fig. 6 from the position` shown in Fig. 5, yso as to hold the detent or locking member 13 out of locking position.
To hold the detent in unlocked position, spring means is provided preferably in the form of a helical spring 2O housed in the tubular bonding member abutting ythe retaining pin 9 at one end and having a. ball 19 seated against the other end, this ball being adapted to cooperate with the front face of the depending extension of the locking member to hold the locking member both in locked and in unlocked position. Vhen in locked position the curved face 17g engages the ball slightly above the center of the latter, so that the shoulder 15 is held in engagement with the shoulder or abutment 12 and the extension engages the under side of the arch 11. When the detent is depressed, the extension presses the ball rearwardly until the ball enters the recess 17e in the front face of the extension, the ball holding the detent so that the pivot pin 8 lies in the recess 1'?c above the projection 17h. Upon the collapsing movement ofthe last, the retaining pin 7 engages the wall at the forward end of the slot of the locking member 13 and shifts said lockingmember to carry the projection 17b from the position beneath the pivot pin 8. At the same time the bell acts on the projection 17f and elevates the detent or locking member 13 to the posit-ion shown in Fig. 7, so that when the last is again expanded the detent will be free in order that the shoulder or abutment 15 may cooperate with the shoulder or abutment 12.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided alast in which the bonding means is formed by two tubular bonding members pivotally connected together. These bonding members require the provision of only a small opening in the lastl parts and in this way do not weaken the last, particularly, the fore part at the instep portion. One of these bonding members has an arched portion which acts as an abutment for the locking member arranged on the other last part. The other bonding member is slotted and is secured by a. retaining' pin which also serves asi-a pivot for the locking member, the latter operating through a slot in the top of the bonding member in order to cooperate with the abutment on the other last part. A holding means is provided on the last part on which the abutment is formed and this holding means holds the locking member away from the abutment when the locking member is moved in cooperation with it, while `the last is expanded and when the last is collapsed frees the locking member to permit the latter t-o cooperate with the abutment on the next expansion of the last.
What I cla-im as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a last, the combination with va fore part and a heel part, of a bonding means between said parts embodying two pivotally connected tubular bonding members, one of which is slotted and the other of which is provided with an abutment, a retaining pin for the slotted bonding member, and a locking member pivotally mounted on said slotted bonding member and movable in said slot into and out of cooperation with said abutment on the bonding member.
2.- The combination, in a last, with a fore part and a heel part, of bonding means embodying two pivotally co-nnected tubular bonding members, one or" which is provided withV a slot and the other of which has an arched portion adjacent the pivot forming an abutment, and a locking member movable in the slot of the rst mentioned bonding member into and out of engagement of said abutment on the arched portion.
3. The combination, in a last, with a fore part and a heel part, of an abutment on one of said parts, a movable locking member mounted on the other part and adapted to cooperate with said abutment said movable locking member being displaceable from locking position, while the last is in an expanded condition, and holding means on the part carrying the abutment for holding the locking member out of engagementwith the abutment after the locking member has been displaced from locking position, while the last is in an expanded condition, said holding means being shifted out of holding rela.- tion with the locking member on the collapse of the last to permit :such locking member to vcooperate with the abutment on the expansion ot the last.
4. The combination, in a last, with a fore part, a. heel part, and means pivotally connecting said parts, oit' an abutment on one of said parts, apivoted and slidably mounted detent arranged o-n the other of said parts and adapted to cooperate with said abutment, al hook carried by said detent, and a holding means arranged on the part carrying the abutment and adapted to be engaged by the hook to hold the detent outo'f engagement with the abutment when the detent is moved away from locking position, said hook disengaging Vwith the holding means on the collapse of the last to permit the detent to cooperate with the abutment on the next expansion of the last.
5. The combination, in a last, with a tore part, a heel part and bonding means pivotally `connecting' said parts, of al retaining pin for holding the bonding means in one ot said parts, an abutment on the other part, a locking member pivota-lly and slidably mounted on the retaining pin and adapted to cooperate with the abutment, and holding means tor holding the locking member out of cooperation with the abutment.
6. The combination, in a last, with a fore part and a heel part of bonding means pivotally connecting said parts and embodying a cylindrical tubular bonding member pro-- vided with a slot in its top wall, a retaining pin securing the tubular bonding member in a last part, a locking detent pivotally mounted on said retaining pin and operating in said slot of the bonding member, and an abutment on the other last part with which said locking member engages to hold the last in expanded condition.
7. The combinatiomin a last, with a fore part and a heel part, of bonding means pivotally connecting said parts embodying a tnbular bonding member having an arched portion formed with an abutment and secured in one of said last parts, and a locking member movably mounted on the other last part and adapted to cooperate with said arched portion to hold the last in an expanded condition.
8. The combination in a last with a tore part and a heel part, of bonding means connecting said parts and embodying two pivotally connected members, one of which is rigidly secured in the heel part and the other of which is rigidly secured in the fore part, the bonding member in the tore part having an abutment formed thereon, pins for securing the bonding means in the heel part and the fore part, a locking member movably mounted in the heel part and arranged to cooperate with said abutment, and a holding means for holding the locking member out ot cooperation with the abutment while the last is in an expanded condition.
9. The combination in a last with a fore part, a heel part and bonding means pivotally connecting said parts, of a locking member movably mounted on one of the said last parts, an abutment rigidly mounted on the other of said parts, and holding means for holding the locking member out of locking position while the last is expanded, said holding means being mounted on the part carrying the abutment and being shifted out of holding' relation with the locking member on the relative movement of the. last parts to permit such locking member to cooperate with the abutment when the last is again expanded after a collapsing movement.
10. A last comprising a fore part and a heel part separated by a cut providing a V shaped opening at the top, a bonding member pivotally connected with the heel part and rigidly secured in the fore part, retaining means for securing said bonding member in the fore part, an abutment rigid with the bonding member in the fore part and separate from the retaining means, said abutment being exposed at the V shaped opening and a detent movably mounted in the heel part, exposed for manual operation at the V shaped opening and arranged to cooperate with said abutment, and holding means for ho-lding said detent out of cooperation with the abutment when the abutment is shifted manually from such cooperation while the last is in an expanded condition.
