Description

Sept. 15, 1925.
E. COOKENBOO SAFETY LETTER WEIGHT Filed May 12' Patented Sept. 15, 1925 UNITED STATES ELWOOD COOKENBOO,
OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
SAFETY LETTER WEIGHT.
Application filed May 12, 1924. Serial No. 712,891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELwoon CooKnNBoo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Safety Letter Weight, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a safety letter weight.
One object of the invention is to produce an article of the character described, spe- "cially designed for attachment to a basket, or other receptacle for loose letters, and the like whereby the letters will be firmly held in the basket.
Another object of the invention is to provide an article of the character described which is of simple structure, light and flexible, and which is detachably secured to the basket so that it will, at all times, be in readiness for use.
With the above and other objects in view this invention has particular relation to cer tain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts, and use, an example of which is given in this'specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a plan view of a letter basket with the device attached thereto.
Figure 2 shows a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the basket, showing the device partly in section, attached thereto.
Figure 3 shows a side view of the clamp, and Figure 4 shows an elevation view thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 designates the retaining basket.
The numerals 2 and 3 designate, respectively the inner and outer clamp aws, forming the anchoring clamp employed. These jaws have right angularly disposed sides forming flanges 4, 4, and 5, 5, the latter fitting within the former, and a rod 6 passes through aligned hearings in these flanges and is retained therein by a head 7, on one end and a nut 8 on the other, thus hingedly connecting the jaws together. The upper and 9 of the jaw 2 is disposed at right angles to the body thereof to close the space between the jaws, and to give the device a better appearance. The lower ends of the jaws are inwardly curved, and serrated, as at 10, so as to grip the basket Wall which is clamped between the jaws. A set screw 11 is threaded through the upper end of the jaw 3 and its free end is adapted to abut against the corresponding end of the jaw 2.
In an obvious manner the teeth 10 may be caused to engage, or be released from the wall of the basket 1, by manipulating the set screw 11.
There is a weight 12, of any desired contour, and having ahead 18, connected there to by a reduced neck 14.
There is a substantially V-shaped arm having the side members 15, 15. The free ends of these side members work through the slots 16, 16 in the jaw 2 and have bearings' on the rod 6. The closed end of the arm is formed into an open ring 17 designed to receive the neck 14 loosely and thus permit the free vertical movement of the weight.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described including a clamp formed with jaws, a rod connecting the jaws together, a weight, an
arm having side members formed with bearings at one end which work on said rod and having its other end connected loosely to the weight.
2. A device of the character described in cluding a clamp formed with clamp jaws one ofwhich is provided with slots, a weight, an arm working through said slots at one end and hinged to the clamp, said arm having its other end loosely connected to the weight.
3. A device of the character described including clamp jaws, a rod connecting said jaws together, one of the jaws having slots, a weight, an arm having side members which work through said slots and have bearings on the rod, the other end of the arm being loosely connected to the weight.
4. A device of the character described including clamp jaws, a rod connecting said jaws together, one of the jaws having slots, a weight, an arm having side members which work through said slots and have bearings on the rod, the other end of the arm being loosely connected to the weight and an adjusting screw through one jaw and having its free end adapted to abut the other jaw.
