Be it known that I, HARRY B. STANSBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Piston, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pistons, and has special reference to pistons for internal combustion engines.
An object of the invention is to provide a piston embodying new and useful features of construction and associated parts hereinafter disclosed functioning to maintain better operative I relationship with respect to the cylinder walls than do pistons of usual construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved piston including a head and guide portions connected with the head, and being relatively yieldable, in combination with means for retaining the guide portions in close contact with the cylinder walls without retarding the operation of the piston in the cylinder.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved piston which is of lighter weight than pistons of usual construction and comprising a head provided with a depending annular flange portion having piston grooves therein and an integral guide portion at one side, in combination with an additional cooperative guide portion pivotally or yieldingly supported by the head and annular depending portion, whereby the two guide portions may yield relatively and maintain proper contact with the cylinder walls.
Various other general and specific objects will appear from the following description, reference being made .to the drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of the invention.

The piston. shown comprises a. head 1 from which an integral annular ring supporting portion 2 depends, the same being provided with a number of circumferential piston ring grooves 3. uniting the bosses 4 with the annular portion 2 extending to and merging into integral connection with the head 1. Thus the bosses 4 extend below the annular portion 2 so that the holes in the bosses are accessible for the insertion and withdrawal of a piston pin.
A depending guide portion 6 is formed in integral connection with one side of the annular portion 2 of the piston and is shaped to provide an approximately semi-circular notch 7 in each side edge thereof, so that in association with the other guide portion hereinafter described, two-diametrically opposite approximately circular holes are pro vided at the ends of the piston pin. The marginal edges of the notches 7 are bordered by internal strengthening ribs 8, and the lower inside edge of the guide portion 6 is bordered by a strengthening rib 9.
The piston part 2 diametrically opposite from the guide portion 6 has an inwardly extending and depending hinge forming projection 10. The guide portion 11 for cooperating with the guide portion 6 is similarly shaped, having notches 12 in its side edges which, as previouslystated, with the notches 7 form substantially circular holes or openings in diametrically opposite sides of the piston at the ends of the piston pin. The upper end of the guide portion 11 is provided with a thickened hinge forming portion 13 notched to receive the hinge forming portion 10 therein. Alined holes are formed through the hinge forming portions 10 and 13 to receive a pin 14 by which the guide portion 11 is pivotally connected to the remaining piston structure, with the inner extremities of the lower end of said guide portion 11 arranged and adapted to abut against the inner extremities of the lower end of the guide portion 6, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. A groove 15 is formed around the lower end portion of the piston comprising the parts-6 and 11 and is designed and adapted to receive a piston ring to hold the parts in proper relationship to form a seal with the cylinder walls.
Expansion springs 16 are shown mounted in position between supporting projections 17 near the lower ends of the guide portions 6 and 11, respectively, to press said guide portions apart, or in opposite directions and into contact with the cylinder walls.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my improved piston is an embodiment of light weight possessing the desired characteristic of expansion to maintain proper relationship with the cylinder walls, and the desired yielding characteristic so that it will not bind. In mounting the piston it is preferable to obtain an arrangement in which the guide portion 6 that is integrally connected with the piston head is on the thrust side and receives the thrust of the explosion so that the -greater strains are'received and sustained thereby. v
I am aware that the construction and relationship of the parts may be varied without departure from the nature and principle of the invention. I do not restrict myself to the exact structure shown, nor in any unessential particulars, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A piston comprising a head, a depending annular wall integrally united with the head, piston pin bosses integrally united with the head and with said wall, and a pair of guide portions one of which is integrally united to said annular wall and the other of which is pivotally connected with said wall, said two guide portions being wholly disconnected from said piston pin bosses below said wall, leaving said guide portions free for expansion and contraction with respect to said bosses.
2. A piston comprisin a head, a depending annular wall integral ly united with the head, piston pin bosses integrally united with the head and with said wall, and a pair of guide portions one of which is integrally united to said annular wall and the other of which is pivotally connected with said wall, said two guide portions being wholly dis connected fromsaidpiston pin bosses below said wall leaving said guide portions free for expansion and contraction with respect to said bosses, said ide portions forming relatively large openings below said annular wall of greater area than the area of said piston pinbosses.
. 3. A piston comprising a head, an annular piston ring groove wall extending downwardly from said head, and a pair of guide portions one of which is pivotally united to said ring groove wall forming openings at diametrically opposite sides of the piston and having their lower ends in contact.
4. A piston comprising a head, an annular piston ring roove wall extending downwardly from said head, and a pair of guide portions one of which is pivotally united to said ring oove wall forming openings at diametrica y opposite sides or the plston and having their lower'ends in contact, and provided with a piston rin roove around their guide portion forme fiy their combined lower ends.
5. A piston comprising a head, an annular piston ring groove wall extending downwardly from said head, a pair of guide ortions one of which is pivotally united to said ring groove wall forming openings at diametrically opposite sides of the piston and having their lower ends in contact, and means for pressing the lower ends of said guide portions apart. i
6. A piston comprising a head, an annular piston ring groove wall extending downwardly from sald head, a'pair of guide portions one of which is pivotally united to said ring groove wall forming openings at diametrically opposite sides of'the piston and having their lower ends in contact, a guide portion formed by the combined lower ends of said two portions being provided with a piston ring groove, and means for pressing the lower ends of said two guide portions apart. 7
7. A piston comprising a head, a depending ring groove wall integrally united with the head, piston pin bosses integrally united with said wall and said head and extending below said wall, and a pair of guide portions arranged to yield in planes at right angles to a piston pin mounted in said bosses, both of said guide ortions being wholly disconnected from said bosses below the lower end of said wall, and one of said guide portions being integrally united with said wall and the other pivotally connected with said wall.
8. A piston comprising a head, a depending ring groove wall integrally united with the head, piston pin bosses integrally united with said wall and said head, a pair of guide portions arranged to yield in planes at right angles to a piston pin mounted in said bosses, one of said guide portions being pivotally united to said wall on a pivot the axis of which is parallel to the axis of a piston pin mounted in said bosses, means for pressing the lower ends of said guide portions apart, and means for supporting a piston ring around the lower ends of the piston formed by said two guide portions.
