IMPROVEMENT IN GRATE-BARS` Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,330, dated September 22, 1874 application tiled August 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. MILLER, of Green Point, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate-Bars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to grate-bars; and consists informing the arms which support the bars with enlarged heads, and providing the bars with corresponding recesses, so that the bars have no vertical movement, but are held in place by the arms, and in the use of T-shaped levers and cross-bar, with the gratebars combined with rods pivoted at both ends, so that there is no friction in moving the bars, but the power is applied direct, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a bottom view of a fire-box or furnace embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same through the line x rv, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of one end of the grate-bar. Fig. 4 is a modication of the same; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of one end of a grate-bar.
A represents the walls of a fire-box or furnace, of any suitable construction. At each end of the furnace is a series .of curved hangers, B B, and these hangers are connected by bars O O, running lengthwise of the furnace, so that the hangers and cross-bars furnish the entire support for the bars and all the operative mechanism. D D are the grate-bars, constructed in any of the known and usual ways, and each grate-bar is supported at each end upon an arm, a, pivoted inthe hanger B. The upper end of this arm is shaped somewhat in the form of the head of a railroad-rail, and in the under side of the grate-bar is a curved recess, b, for the reception of the same, so that when the enlarged head a of the arm a is inserted in the recess b it furnishes a bearing for the rail. The recess bis of a form corresponding to the enlarged head of the arm, the lower portion of the recess extending below the largest portion of the head, so that when the head is inserted the bar cannot be raised upward so long as the head remains in the recess. The head is inserted in the recess by a side movement. I bars C O are pivoted T-shaped levers E E, the two side arms of which are, by rods el d, connected with the grate-bars D D. The center arms of the levers E are connected by a bar or rod, h, as shown. The rods d, connecting the levers and the grate-bars, are pivoted to both the levers and the grate-bars, being connectedl to the latter by stud h', so that the power applied to the bars is direct, thus avoiding all friction, as where slotted levers are used. One of the levers E is provided with a socket, z', for the insertion of a lever or handle, G, by means of which the grate-bars are rocked back and forth.
It will readily be seen that, by working the handle Gr, all the levers E are turned back and forth on their pivots, and, by means of the connecting-rods dd, the grate-bars are alternately rocked back and forth upon the arms a a.
The ends of the grate-bars D are covered by cross-bars H, so as to prevent the clogging of the gratebars between their ends and the fire-box. Each gratebar D is constructed of two parallel bars, m m, connected at the ends, and at suitable intervals between the ends, by cross-bars a a. The upper edges of the parallel bars m m are corrugated, as shown, and near each end they are cut away on the under side, and in said parts are formed the recesses b b for the reception of the upper ends of the pivoted arms a a. rlhe ends of the grate-bars D D, thus constructed, are beveled on their under sides, so as to facilitate the downward passage of any cinders that might accidentally come thereunder when the bars are rocked, as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
