Be it known that I, WILLIAli/LH. REMING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort North, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inAutomatic Displacement Pumps, of which the following is a specification. i
My'invention relates to pumps and more particularly to v{automatic displacement pumps; and the object istoprovide simple pumping devices by which'a continuous flow of water or other liquid is secured and to provide pumping devices which can be provided with certain automatically actuated features atsmall cost and which pumps are simple in construction and operation. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the pumping mechanism with the pumping cylinders shown in section. Fig. 2 is aplan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing a variation in the manner of automatically actuating the three-way valve.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the threeway valves, showing the connection to a common stem.

The pump is provided with a discharge pipe 1 which is provided with branch pipes 2 and 3 and these branch pipes are projected down into cylinders 4 and 5 which are located near the bottom of the well 6. The cylinders 4 and 5 are provided with intake valves 7 and 8 through which the cylinders 4 and 5 are filled with liquid.
Provision is made for displacing and forcing the water or other liquid from one cylinder while the other cylinder is being filled and vice versa. Pipes 9 and 10 are provided for injecting a fluid lifting element, such as gas, compressed air, or steam, down into the cylinders 4 and 5. The pipes 9 and 10 are provided with three-way valves 11. In the illustration, the valve .8 is closed, the
cylinder 5 having been filled with water or other liquid, and a fluid lifting element is going down the pipe 9, the valve-11 folpipe 9 being open. Liquid is going into cylinder 4, he valve 11' for pipe 10 having been closed. The valves 11 are connected to an. oscillating stem 12 and the valves are so arranged that the stem opens one'valve and" closes the other and at the same time closes 'the exhaust pipe 13 andopens exhaust pipe 14. The fluid lifting element which is going down into the cylinder 5lis forcing the liquid therein'out through the pipe -1. While the liquid isgoing out of pipe 1, water or other liquid is accumulating in a vessel or bucket 1 .so that a small amount of water will run from the pipe 1 into the vbucket15. The fill ing of the vessel 15 with liquid is so timed 'At the same time the vessel 15 will cause the valve 11 in pipe 10 to be opened for pipe 10 and closed to exhaust pipe 14. The cylinder 4 will be filled by liquid by the time the vessel 15 starts down and the fluid lifting element coming down pipe 10 will cause liquid to continue to flow through pipe 1. As soon as the cylinder 4 is emptied of fluid and the vessel 15 emptied of fluid, the weight 17 will act in the same manner as vessel 15 and so open valve 11 of pipe 9 and close exhaust 13 and at the same time close valve 11 in pipe 10 and open exhaust 14. At the same time vessel 15 goes back to the elevated position. To make a positive opening and closing of a valve'19 which is carried by a lever 20 a lug 21 is attached to the brace collar 22 for opening the valve when the vessel 15 swings down. When this lever swings down, the lever 20 will strike the lug 21 and this stroke will force the valve 19 from its seat and so drain the vessel 15. The weight 17 will then force the vessel 15 back to the elevated position.
When the vessel 15 goes back to the elevated position, the lever will strike the lug 23. This will draw the valve 19 down on its seat -15. A small pipe 16 is tapped into the pipe and so seal the bottom of vessel 15. The vessel 15 Will again be filled With the liquid and the action Will be the same as above described The pipes 2 and 3 may be provided With check valves 24.
The valves 11 are fixedly connected to the stem 12 and the opening 24 directly through the valve of one valve must be at right angles to the corresponding opening of the other valve. In Figs. 3 and 4 the opening 24 directly through the valve is shown in horizontal position and the short opening 25 is vertically disposed, and in Fig. 4 the opening 24 of the other valve is vertically disposed. The exhaust pipes 13 and 14 must be on opposite sides.
WVhat I claim, is
1. An automatic displacement pump comprising a discharge pipe provided With branch intake pipes'and valves therefor, a
liquid cylinder for each branch pipe provided With an opening and an intake valve therefor, airpipes connected to said cylinders and provided with three Way valves having passagesfor alternate injection of a fluid pressure element for discharging liquid from said cylinders and having exhaust passages for alternate discharge of fluid pressure, and means for alternately actuatingsaid valves consisting of acominon stem rigid with said valves and a lever rigid With said nseaioe stem and carrying a Weight and tripping mechanism.
2. An automatic displacement pump com prising a discharge pipe provided With branch pipes and valves therefor, a liquid cylinder for each branch pipe provided with an intake opening and a valve therefor, fluid pressure pipes connected to said cylinders and provided with three-Way valves for al ternate injection of fluid pressure element for dischargingliquid from said cylinders, a common stem for said valves operatively connected to said air three-Way valves, each valve having a supply passage for a fluid pressure element and an exhaust passage for discharge of the fluid pressure element, the sup-ply passage of one valve being at right angles to the supply passage of the other valve and each valve having its exhaust passage at right angles to its supply passage, a lever rigidly connected to said stem for opening the supply passage and closing the exhaust passage of one-valve and simultaneously closing'the supply passage and opening the exhaust passage of the other valve, and a tripping mechanism for automatically actuating said lever.
