UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. 'GIESSLER, OF CLINTON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLE-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,299, dated September 22, 1874; application filed August 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. GIESSLER, of the city and county of Clinton, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Spring Back-Rest for Vehicle-Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a vertical section.
The invention relates to novel means whereby the jar, shock, or jolt to the back of an individual, resulting from the sudden starts of horses in a vehicle, or from unevenness in the roads, may be completely taken up and neutralized.
The invention consists in providing the seat of a vehicle with a pivoted back and springarms, as hereinafter fully described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A represents the seat of a vehicle; B, the back; and O O, the arms. The back B is supported by two uprights, b b, Which are of any suitable construction, and pivoted at b I),
while the arms 0 C have ends bent, and proto yield whenever force is applied thereto, or
the Weight of a person thrown against it.
This may be applied to old or new seats with but little expense. is thoroughly effective for the purpose intended, and will obviate a difficulty long felt and appreciated, butnot hitherto sought to be remedied.
I am aware that there has been heretofore used a lazy-back, attached toframe by hinges, while a pair of springs at the sides of seat serve as an arm-rest and to support theback; but
What I claim is The combination, with a vehicle-seat, of a hinged back and arms, O (J, held forward by springs, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
JOHN L. GIESSLER.
