TIMER.
Application filed July 14, 1921. Serial No. 484,691.
T all LU/EOWZ- it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs A. Man, a citizen of the United States and resident of Milwaukee. in the county of Milwaukee and State of Vfisconsin. have invented new and useful Improvements in Timers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates to timers.
The object of the invention is to provide a timer of simple, economical and reliable construction, in which the revolving brush engages with the relatively fixed contacts carried by fiat springs which lie in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of the brush, thus preventing any lateral swinging of the fixed contacts which would interfere with the proper timing of the spark.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is an interior view of a timer embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side View of the timer, parts being shown in section; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, parts being broken away; Fig. 4 is a de tail view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modified form of contacts; Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
In the drawings the numeral 6 designates a casing to which the fixed contacts are secured and within which said contacts are housed.
In Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, each of the fixed contacts embodies a terminal bolt 7 having a slotted head 8, a contact member 9 having a slotted head 10 and a cylindrical portion 11, and a fiat spring 12 having its ends mounted in the slots formed in the heads 8 and 10 and secured therein -in any suitable manner, as by pins 13.
A washer 14 of insulating material is mounted in an opening 15 in the casing and the shank of each bolt 7 passes through this washer and another washer 16 of insulating material and carries a clamping nut 17 which cooperates with a terminal nut 18 to form a binding post for the wire leading to the ignition device of the engine.
A brush is secured to the timing shaft 19 of the engine and includes a collar 20 fit- Q ting said shaft and suitably secured to turn therewith. a radial y extending pin 21 car-- ried by the collar, and a roller contact 22 mounted on said pin and adapted to engage the cylindrical portions 11 of the fixed contacts. The flat springs are disposed radially with respect to the shaft 19 and lie in a plane or planes at right angles to the center line or axis of rotation of the shaft 19, and are made much broader than their thickness so that while they may flex widthwise when the heads 10 are engaged and pressed upon by the roller 22, they will not flex edgewise and disturb the proper timing relation between them and the roller.
In Figs. 4 and 5 each of the fixed contacts embodies the terminal bolt 23 having a slotted head 24, a contact member 25 having a slotted head 26, and pin portion 26, a roller contact 27 journalled on the said portion 26' and held in operative position by meansof its abutment against the head 26 and a washer 28 with a cotter pin 29, and a flat spring 30 having its ends mounted in the slots formed in the head 24 and member 25 and secured therein in any suitable manner, as by pins 31. The bolt 23 is identical With the bolt 7 and is similarly secured to the casing and insulated therefrom, as previously mentioned, by means of washers 14 and 16 of insulating material and the nut 17.
In Figs. 4 and 5 the brush includes a sleeve or collar 32 secured to the timing shaft 33 and a shoe 34 secured to the collar and having a curved contact face 35 engageable with the rollers 27 The fiat springs 30 are disposed radially with respect to the shaft 33 and lie in a plane or planes at right angles to the center line or axis of rotation of said shaft and are much broader than they are thick so that while they may flex widthwise when the rollers 27 are engaged and pressed upon by the shoe 34 they will not flex edgewise and disturb the proper timing relation between them and the brush.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a timer, the combination, with a rotating shaft, a brush carried thereby, a casing, a plurality of contacts cooperating with said brush, each contact including a member secured to the casing and having a slot ted head, a contact member having a slotted head, and a flat spring having its ends seated and secured in the slots in said heads, the spring for each contact being disposed in a plane at substantially right angles to the axis of rotation of said shaft and being of greater Width than thickness to prevent its flexing edgewise When its contact member is engaged by the brush.
2. In a timer, the combination, with a rotating shaft, a brush including a collar mounted on said shaft and carrying a radially disposed pivot pin, a roller mounted on said pin, a plurality of contacts successively engaged by said roller, each con tact including a contact member, and a flat spring connected to the casing, each spring disposed in a plane at substantially right angles to the axis of rotation of said shaft and being of greater Width than thickness to prevent its flexing edgewise when its contact member is engaged by the roller.
3. In a timer, the combination, with a rotating shaft, a brush carried thereby, a casing, a plurality of contact members successively engaged by said brush, the brush and each of said members having a rolling and Wiping engagement With each other, and a flat spring secured to the casing and sup porting each of said members and disposed in a plane at substantially right angles to the axis of rotation of said shaft, each spring being of greater Width than thickness to prevent its flexing cdgewise when its contact member is engaged by the brush.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
