METAL WINDOW.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Animus l-l. NnsHmM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metal Windows, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in metal windows of the pivotal type.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a metal window in which the frame and sash are formed of commercial or stock metal bars of the desired cross sectional shape welded together.
A further object of the invention is to provide a metal window having a medial section pivotally connected to the main portion in a very simple manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a metal window having a pivoted sash portion which may be easily removed from the sash frame without the use of tools.
A further object of the invention is to provide a metal window in which all of the joints of the pivotal sash are overlapped at two places to form a weatherproof construction.
A further object of the invention is to provide a metal window which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved metal window and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof. i v
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1 is a side View of the outer side of the improved metal window;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof taken on a larger scale on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional detail view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a. horizontal sectional detail View taken on line 1- 1 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the pivotal connection.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 8 indicates a rectangular sash frame formed of bars of metal connected together in a manner to provide glazing openings 9 and a central sash opening 10 for pivotally receiving a sash 11. The top, bottom and opposite side portions of the sash frame indicated re spectively by the numerals 12, 13 and 14, are preferably formed of commercial steel of T-shape in cross section and the inner edge portions of said side portions are provided with notches 15 to receive the outer side flanges 16 of the'sash 11. The sash is also formed of commercial steel of T-shape in cross section with the flat sides of the T extending outwardly and the parts welded together to form a rectangularly shaped rigid sash. The upper half portion of the sash including the side flanges 16, is ofiset inwardly as indicated by the numeral 17 to position said upper halfof the sash on the inner side of the flanges of the sides 14 and the top 12, and position the lower half of the sash on the outer sides of the flanges of the sides 14 and the bottom portion 13 of said sash frame as clearly shown in all of the figures of the drawing. The medial portions 17 of the sash which are bent to offset the upper part of the sash are in horizontal alinement with the notches 15 and the outer opposite edge bent portions extend through 1 said notches as shown to provide an overlapping of the parts and to permit the lower half of the sash to swing outwardly and the upper half inwardly in swinging the sash to open position.
The lower half portions of the side members 14- and the lower member 13 have angle members 18 and 19 connected thereto by welding and the upper notched end portions 18 of the angle members 18 form fulcrums for supporting the sash and upon which the sash swings. Said angle members 18 and 19 are engaged by the inner edges of the T-shaped members of the lower half portion of the sash in overlapping relation to form a second overlapped joint for the lower portion of the sash.
The inner edge'portions ofthe T-shaped members of the upper "portion of the sash are also offset inwardly to correspond with the outer faces of said portions andat the points of offset of the side member s, horizontal shoulders 20 :are formed which bear upon the notched ends 18 before mentioned.
The upper half portion of the sash on the outer sides and on top of the stem porl a double overlapping between the edges of the sash and the sash frame to form a=weather proof sealing means therebetween. V
The lower ends of the angled members 22 have notched: portions 23- which' also bear upon: the upper notched end portions 18 of the angled members:18,and in addition the shouldered portions 20- also swing onsaid portions 18.
-As thus constructed the sash. is medially pivotally supported onithe upper ends of the: angled members with the: outer lower half portion of the sash extending: outside-of the sash'f'rame, and the inner upper halfportion of the sash extending on the inner side of the sash frame,, as clearly shownin Fig. 2. Bothof these half portions. are offset with relation tothe sash frame to provide the double overlapping: of the parts and which parts serve asstops tolimit theclosing'movement of the sash. This: offset relation also provides 'for the pivotal engagement of the shoulders "20 and 23' with the angle members 1:8; lVhenthesash isin open position, it may be withdrawn inwardly and removed from therframewithout the use of tools.
From-theforegoing description it will be seen that the metafwindow maybe made from commercial strips of metal and with out the use of hinges, or trunnions in: a very simplemanner;

A metal window, comprising a sash frame having: oppositeside members formed with" notches and also: having angled portions: provided with inner upper fulcrum ends, and a sash having: offset side flanges which extend through the notches, said flanges also having shouldered portions which-- rest upon the fulcrum ends to piv otally connect the: sash-thereto, the lower portions of the side flanges and a lower flange ofthe: sash overlapping the 'lowerside and bottom portion of the sash frame opening, the upper portions: of the sideimembers andan; upper flangeof the sash being overlapped bythe: upper portions of the side members: of the frame and'can upper flange of said frame.

A metal window, comprising a sash frame formed of lengths of commercial metal of T-shape'in cross section with theirfl'angedfaces extending outwardly and: their stem portions inwardly, the opposite side flanges being notched, said frame also havin'gangular bottom and side 111embers,\the sidemembersterminating medially of the height of thesash opening to'form fulcrum ends, and a sash also formed of lengths of commercial metal of 'F-shape'in' cross section with their flange faces extending outwardly' and their stem portions inwardly, the said sash lengths medially of their height being offset inwardly and-said offset portions extending upwardly to the upper por tions of the sash, the side edges of the offset portions extending through the notches of the sash frame to' position the lower portions of the'sash flanges outside of the frame/and the upper portions inside ofthesaid frame, theinner' edge offset portions of said sash stems forming shoulders which engage the fulcrum ends of the frame to: pivot the sash thereon.

A metal window comprising a sash frame formed of commercial lengths of angular metaland having opposite side flanges provided with notches, said frame alsohavin'g'angledip'ortions' on" the inner bottom and lower half side portions of the frame which terminate medially of the height of the frame opening and form fulcrum end por tions, a sash also formed of commercial lengths of angular metal and having front, upper and lower and opposite side: flanges, the upper portions of the flanges beingoifset from the lower portions and the oifset parts of the side flanges extending through the notches of the'sash fr ame side flanges outside of the frame and the upper portions-inside of the frame, the-side portions of said sash also: having shoulders which bear upon the fulcrum end portions" of the frame-to pivot the sash thereon, and angle members mountedon the inner'upperandopposite sides of the sash and coacting; with the frame in forming a double overlapping of theparts between the upper portion-of the sash and the upper-"portion of the frame, said sash angle members at their lowerends alsobearcoacting with the lower portions of the sash to form a double overlapping between the lower portions of the frame and sash.

A metal window, comprising a sash frame formed of lengths of commercial metal of T-shape in cross section with their flanged faces extending outwardly and their stem portions inwardly, the opposite side flanges being notched, said frame also having angular bottom and side members with the side members terminating medially of the height of the sash opening to form fulcrum ends, and a sash also formed of lengths of commercial metal of T-shape in cross section with their flange faces extending outwardly and their stem portions inwardly, the said sash lengths medially of their height being offset inwardly and said offset portions extending upwardly to the upper portion of the sash, the side edge of the offset portions extending through the notches of the sash frame to position the lower portions of the sash flanges outside of the frame and the upper portions inside of the said frame, the inner edge offset portions of said sash stems forming shoulders which engage the fulcrum ends of the frame to pivot the sash thereon, angle members mounted on the stem portions of the upper half section of the sash and at their lower ends bearing on the fulcrum ends of the frame angle members, said sash angle members coacting with the upper half portions of the frame in forming a double overlapping between the upper portions of the sash and the frame, said frame angle members also coacting with the stem portions of the lower half portions of the sash in forming a double overlapping of the parts between said lower half sash section and the lower portion of the frame.
