UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY KELLER, OF SAUK CENTRE, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RECIPROCATING WINNOWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 55,241, dated September 22, 1874 application filed July 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY KELLER, of Sauk Centre, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reciprocating Winnowers, of which the following is a specifica` tion:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved reciprocating winnower or grainfanning mill, taken on the the line c c, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2, a horizontal section and plan view of the same on the line :t Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention 'relates to improvements in the reciprocating winnower or fanning-mill patented to me under date of June 24, 1873, and numbered 140,201, by which the grain may be separated as to lineness and delivered directly to suitable measures, and also the whole mill stif'ened and braced in a more perfect manner. My invention consists mainly in the arrangement of spouts supported in the frame below the fan-box for delivering the winnowed grain in connection with the lower separating-screens supported in the shoe, and provided with spout-connecting guide-strips.
In the drawing, A A represent the upper, B B the lower, grading-screens,which are fitted into grooves of the sides C and reciprocated by suitable gearing in connection with the shaft of the fan D. The grain is introduced through the hopper E and conveyed to the series of upper screens, and thence to the lower screens in such a manner that the wind from the fan acts with such powerful effect on the grain that the oats and other light matter are separated by passing through the upper sections, and the screenings at the intermediate space between the upper and lower screens. The screenings drop onto the sliding box or case E extending at the base of the mill below and along the full length of the screens, being readily taken off therefrom. The lower screens B are of different grades, the upper being wider than the lower, and are connected at their lower edges with inclined lateral'brace-sheets F, which strengthen the front part of the mill below the farmingboX and take up the grain from the screens B, conveyingit by curved guide-strips F1, forming spouts sidewise of each other to half-bushel or other measures placed below the same. The screens B are also provided with side guidestrips F2, which form the extension of the corresponding strips of the inclined spouts, and secure the delivery of the grain to the respective screen-connecting spouts.
The grain is thus continuously and steadily separated from the chaff, assorted as to fineness, and fed to the receiving-measures, and thereby the usefulness and practicability of the fanning-mill considerably enhanced.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl As an improvement in reciprocating Winnowers, the combination of the lower differently-graded screens or sieves B, provided with spout-connecting guidestrips F2, and
supported in the reciprocating shoe, with the lateral inclined grain-delivering spouts F F1, supported upon the frame,'and arranged substantiall y as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY KELLER.
