IMPROVEMENT IN FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,240, dated September 2.2, 1874; application filed August 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN JONES, of Utica, Oneida county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Faucets or Spigots; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, with the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to that article of manufacture known as faucets or spigots to be fastened into barrels or casks to facilitate the draft of fluids. It consists in furnishing a gate to move vertically in suitable guides to serve as a cut-off to the flow, the same being operated through the agency of cog and rack gear by a lever pivoted loosely to said gate or cut-0E.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on line .90 a; of Fig. 1.

A is the shell of the spigot, which should be conical in form and provided, if necessary, with screw-threads to assist in fastening it securely into the head of the cask, or to be furnished with any other common assistance for securing it firmly to the vessel from which the fluid is to be drawn. This shell is cast or formed with an enlargement at its head to form a hold to the screws which are used to secure it to the guide-pieces B B. These guide-pieces have a rabbet fashioned on their inner edges their entire length, which feature, together with the face of the shell, forms the grooves in which slides the gate 0. Onone of these guide-pieces is formed a rack, which is engaged by a spur-wheel, D, which is pivoted loosely to the gate 0. Extending from the spur-wheel is the lever-arm E, which in the hands of the operator revolves about the movable axis of the said spur=wheel, and carries with it up or down the gate 0, which closes or opens the orifice F in the shell of the spigot.
I am aware that spigots have been made and used with gates moving vertically in guides to open and close the same; but in these the pinion has been located on the outside of the guides, so that in opening and closing the gates they are caused to bind against the side opposite to the pinion, and it is necessary to provide a friction-wheel to ob viate this difiiculty and give a smooth and even movement. In my gate I place the pinion or gear-wheel on the gate itself, which does away, in a large measure, with this difficulty just mentioned, and gives a smooth and even movement, and is comparatively free from frictional wear.
What I claim as new and my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A spigot having a gate moving vertically in upright guides, and provided with a rack fixed to said guides, combined with a spur-wheel or pinion secured to the gate itself, and moved by a lever carrying with it said gate, as described, for the purpose set forth.
