Application filed Kay 8, 1925. Serial No. 28,879.
To all *whom it may 0mm.-
Be it known that I, Davin REISZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and,
State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Game Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to game apparatus and more particularly to game apparatus,
- the broad conce t of which is disclosed in my pending app 'cations, one of which was filed July 17, 1922, Serial No.4575,532, and the other filed February 12, 1923, and given Serial No. 618,634.
An object of the invention is to provide a folding game board and game pieces with an im roved framing mechanism which not only ctions as aframe or partial enclosure for the game pieces but also serves to hold the game pieces on the game board so that when the device ismoved or removed the pieces I will be on the me board and can be conveniently positioned for play.
A father object is to provide a game apparatus including a, game board having a pair of parallel fold lines spaced apart a. distance approximating the thickness of the framing device and the game pieces, whereby when the framing device is located on a section of the game board with the game pieces in the framing device the other section of the game board can be neatly and smoothly folded so that two sections of the game board will lie flush with opposite faces of the framing device and function as a closure for the framing device to hold the game pieces in the framing device; and I may provide other additional means, as will hereinafter appear, to hold or secure the parts .in such position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be morc full hereinafter described and pointed out in t e claims.

Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1, illustrating a modification;
Figure 5 is a view in-transversesection of the game apparatus shown in Figure 4 when the latter is folded and the game pieces are in position therein;
Figure6'is a fragmentary plan view similar to Figure 4, illustrating a modification; Figure 7 is a view in transverse section through the completely closed and encased game apparatus, as shown in Figure 6, with f the game pieces in position;
Figure 8 is a plan view, illustrating another modification;
Figure 9 is a view in section on the line 99 of Figure 8;
Figure '10 is-a view in section, showing the game apparatus illustrated in Figures 8 and 9 when the apparatus is completel folded;
Figure 11 is a fragmentary p an view, illustrating another modification;
Figure 12 is a view in section, showing the game apparatus illustrated in Figure 11 when completely folded.
Referring more particularly to Figures 1, 2 and 3, 1 represents a game board, 2 a framing device, 3 game pieces and 4 an enclosing envelope. The game board may be made of any suitable material having the desired flexibility or rigidity in accordance with the desire of the trade. This board preferably has an ornamental surface such as the standard type of checker or chess board.
The board 1 is of rectangular form and is provided at opposite sides of a center line with a pair of parallel fold lines 5, 5. These fold lines 5, 5 are spaced apart a distance approximatel the same or slightly greater than the thic ess of the framing device 2.
The framing device 2 may be made of any suitable material, is of general oblong form, and provides a space or spaces therein suflicient to accommodate the proper number of game pieces 3. v
It will be noted that the game pieces 3 are of approximately the same thickness or; depth as the framing device, so that when the framing device is positioned'on the game board with the game pieces therein, one section of the game board can be olded over the framin device and the game ieces, and the two si es or sections of the game board will provide flush closuresfor t e opposite sides of the framing device and completely encase the game pieces.
When the game board is opened, the framing device will hold the game pieces on the board, and when the framing device is moved or removed it will leave the game pieces on the respective payers half of the board for convenience in assembling to play the game.
To hold the-parts in their folded or assembled form, I may provide a sliding envelope, such as is shown in Figure4, which is of a size and shape to fit the assembled game apparatus and which is preferably made with finger-receiving recesses 6 so that the game board can be easily grasped and removed from the envelope.
In the modification shown in Figures 4 and 5 I provide a game board 7 which is slightly wider at one-half than atthe other, and form flanges 8 around both halves of the game board and at right angles to the gameboard and of a proper depth, sothat when the framing device 2 and the 5 game pieces 3 are located on theboard the board can be folded and the flanges 8 will provide a snug. closure and hold the parts assembled.
In the form of my device illustrated in Figures 6 and 7, a foldable extension 9 is provded on one end of the game board 10 so that it may project over the back of the folded game board. This extension 9 may be secured to the back of the game board by an ordinary snap fastener 12,-and a foldable gripping flange 13 may be provided on the extension to facilitate the manipulation thereof.
' I In this modification I have illustrated a slightly different form of framing device 1 1 which has its bar 15 connecting the sides of the framing device.
I would have it distinctlyunderstood that the invention is not limited to the exact manner offorming or shaping the framing device, as this may bemade in various way 5.
' The broad idea is to provide a framing dc- I 8, 9, and 10, one end of the game board 21f vice of such shape and construction that it will act to hold flat game pieces in assemblage, so that when the framing device is moved or removed the pieces will be on the board.
Infthe modification illustrated in Figures is permanently secured over one side of the framin device eing preferably thicker than the other portion, and the edge of the material of the ame board co-operating with a recess 17 1n the framing device constituting a groove in which the other endof the game board may be positioned, as shown in Figure 10, so as to hold the parts assembled. A finger gripping tab 18 ma be'provided 011. the end of the game boa to facilitate the manipulation thereof. K
device 16, a portion of said framing The modification illustrated in Figure 11 is similar to the preferred form with the exception that the framing device 19 is so connectedtoone end of the board 20 as to be hingedly connected.
I have illustrated a number of different forms of my improved game apparatus, all of which include the broad idea of a movable framing device adapted to be enclosed within a folding game board and to hold fiat game pieces with their faces visibly exposed so that the game pieces lie on the plane surface of the board ready for play as soon as the game board is opened, and I desire to cover this idea broadly.
I use the term framing device in its broadest possible sense to include a device which actually frames the set of game pieces and which permits the operation or manipulation as above set forth.
Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from the spirit of the invention, and hence I do not limit myself tothe precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall.
within the spirit andscope of the appended claims. Y
I claim: p
1. A game apparatus, including a foldin game board, and a framing device adapte to hold flat game. pieces located on one section of the game board, and said framing device enclosed and covered at opposite sideswhen the game board is folded thereon.
2. A game apparatus including a folding game board, a set of fiat game pieces adapted to be positioned on the board, a framing device adapted to hold said game pieces in an assemblage on one section of the game board, and said game board when folded adapted to "cover both the lower and upper faces ofthe framing device and the game pieces. V
3. A game apparatus including a game board, a framing device adapted to rest on a section of the game board, and providing space -the'rein for the accommodation of flat game pleces, said game board having a pair of spaced parallel fold lines approximating the thickness of the game pieces and the framing device, whereby when the game board is folded onto the framing device and the game pieces the board will act as a cover for both faces of the framing device and gamepieceawv w 4. A game'device including a game board, a framing device ada ted to rest on a section of the game boar and providing space therein for the'accommodation of flat me pieces, said game board having a pair of spaced parallel fold lines approximating the thickness of the game ieces and the framing device, whereby w on the game board is folded onto the framin device'and the game pieces the board w' act as a cover for both faces of the framing device and game pieces, and means for holding the parts in folded position.
5. A gameapparatus including a game board, a framing device adapted to rest on a section of the game board, and providing space therein for the accommodation of flat 1 game pieces, said game board having a pair for h faces of the framing device and the game pieces, and an envelo e into which said folded framing device an game pieces are adapted to slide.
