TflE GRAPHIC COJ'HOTD-UTHJSL4I FARO! PLACEJLY- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. DANN, OF PHGENIX, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO WELLS M. PECK, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LETTER-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,227, dated September 22, 1871; application tiled August 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. DANN, of Phmnix, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Letter-Box, of which the following 1s a specification:
My invention consists of the application of a signal-bell to a drop-letter box, together with contrivances by which the cover of the orifice through which the letters are dropped into the box will be made to cause the bell to strike when it is moved to uncover the orifice for dropping the letters in, and thus give notice'of the arrival of the mail.
The apparatus is designed mainly for private boxes for the reception of the mail from the postman.
Figure l is a front elevation of the box with the cover raised as when the orifice is opened for dropping a letter in the box. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the box, taken on the line or a; of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line y y of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is the box, into which the letters are to be dropped through the orifice B. O is the cover of the orifice, which, in this case, is arranged to rise and fall on the pivot D for opening and closing the orifice. To this pivot I attach a toothed segment, E, which gears with and turns a pinion, F, which turns tappets G, which actuate the spring-hammer H of a bell, I, mounted on the case, thus causing the bell to sound each time the cover is raised and let fall.
But I do not limit myself to the particular contrivance here shown of--a turning pivot of the cover for imparting the motion for working the hammer, for a sliding or swinging bolt or bar attached to the cover, and moving with it in any Way, may obviously be made to produce the same efl'ect.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The toothed sector E, pinion F, and tappets G, combined in a letter-box to connect the pivot of cover with the hammer of alarm, as shown and described.
WILLIAM D. DANN.
