IMPROVEMENT IN PORK-PACKERS TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,201, dated September 22, 1874 application filed March 9, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM NoTTER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Hog-Bench or Table for Pork-Packers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my improved table; Fig. 2, a like view of the same when the wings are removed; and Fig. 3, a cross-section in the plane of the line a" m.

In preparing hogs for the purpose of producing packed pork a long narrow table is usually employed, on each side of which the workmen are arranged. The hogs are caught and bled and then scaldcd and delivered upon one end of the table. The bristles are then removed by one or more men standing at each side of the table, near that end on which the hogs are delivered. The hogs are then turned over on the table, and thus passed to other workmen who employ scrapers for the purpose of removing the hair. The hogs are then rolled from the scrapers to the shavers, and the latter, after performing their work, deliver the shaved hogs to the header and gammer. The header and gammer performs his work and then swings the hogs from the table. The men whose work it is to deliver the hogs upon the table can generally deliver them faster than the men along the table can perform their part of the work. If the number of men along the table is considerably increased, these men, when too many are employed, are liable to be in the way of each other, and their work is thus impeded. In other words, only a restricted amount of work can be done with advantage on the same table at the same time.

The object of my invention is to make a table at which either one or two gangs of men may be employed with advantage; and to that end it consists of a table having a removable center and removable or folding lateral extensions, substantially as hereinafter described and set forth.

When the center is removed and the extensions applied, as represented in Fig. 1, two gangs of men may be employed, one gang standing in the central opening and the other standing around the outer edge of the table, each gang facing the other. The hogs are delivered on the end 6, the first hog being passed along one of the lateral extensions to the other end, and the next hog along the other extension, and so on alternately.

When the workmen are arranged in this manner a comparatively short table may be employed, and the workmen are not likely to impede each other in their work.
