To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL RISSMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Covering' Cord, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to machines designed for the application of a tubular covering to 4flexible cords and it is the object of the invention to obtain a simple construction of mechanism by which a strip of the Vcovering material is automatically wrapped about and stitched to the cord to be covered. To. this end the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.

My improved machine comprises essentially means for continuously advancing the cord to be covered, together With a guide for wrapping the covering strip about the cord, 'and a sewing machine 'for stitching the edges of the Wrapped strip to each other. The sewing machine, which forms an element of my improvement, is of a Wellknown type comprising a base A, a pedestal B rising therefrom, a revolubleshaft journaled in said pedestal having a .crank C at' one end connected by a link D to an ,oscillatory shaft E jolrnaled in the arm F and having an oscillatory needle-carrying arm G at one end thereof. A. segmental needle H is attached to the arm G and is actuated thereby. I is a loop carrier which is actuated from the crank C through an intermediate mechanism J such that'a loop is icked from the thread of the needle H and is transferred to produce a chain stitch. As the mechanism thus far described is not my invention and is of a a horizontally extending shaft P intermit tently rotated by a ratchet Wheel Q, and pawl R, which latter is actuated by an eccentric S upon the main4x drive shaft. The arrangement` is such that the cord M, with the strip K wrapped thereabout, is drawn from the guide by the action of the feed rol'l 0,' While the oscillationof the needle H and cooperation of the loop carrier I Will stitch the two. edges of the covering fabric to each other. These edge portions are held in contact with each other by a presser linger' T, which, however, is intermittently lifted to permit the needle H to pass through the fabric Without interference.
The construction of the feed roll O is an important part of my invention, in that it is adjustable to various sizes o'f Work and in each adjustment Will function to draw the cordwith the cover Wrapped thereabout out from the guide L. As specifically shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6, the shaft P has formed thereon the toothed roll U, While `upon opposite sides of this roll are sleeved the lflanged rolls V and V. These flanged rolls are fashioned to conform to the opposite sides of the cord andare radially serrated, as indicated at W, sso as to grip the fabric. Adjustment of the rolls V and V is preferably accomplished by interiorly threadingthe same so as to engage With threaded portions X. on the shaft P, andset screws Y are provided for locking theflanged rolls in each position of adjustment.
In operation, the flanged rolls V and V are first adjusted to properly engage the fabric covered cordand are then locked by tightening set screws Y. The cord M is then fed into the guide and also the strip of the covering material is inserted and wrapped about the cord with its opposite edges tucked under, as shownat N. Here the presser foot T 'Will engage the folded edges to hold the same in contact with the cord at the point where theV stitching is to occur. `lNhen motion is im arted to the mechanism, the needle H will be rapidly oscillated and during each forward movement will pass through the looped edge of the cover on one side and upwar through the looped edgef on the other side. thread thus carried through the fabric will be engaged by the loop carrier I, which will throw the loop on the opposite side in a position to be in the path of the needle H during its next reciprocation. Thus the edges of the fabric will be stitched to each other, while the intermittent rotation of the roll.O will advance theA work as required.
Whenever it is necessary to adjust the machine for a larger or smaller 0cord, this may be accomplished by merely loosenin the set screws Y and turning the flange rolls V and V upon their threaded bearingsuntil properly positioned. The set screws ar'e then again tightened and the machine is in 'condition for operation. That I claim as my invention is:
l. The combination with an oscillatory needle and cooperating loop throwing mech` anism, of a guide for the cord to be covered, a surrounding guide for wrappinga fabric strip about sai cord and feed mechanism comprising a roll having a s errated'portion beneath the covered cord, radially serrated flanges on opposite sides of the cord, and means for adjusting said flanges to enlarge or diminish the width'of the space therebetween. v
2. The combination with an oscillatory needle and cooperating loop throwing mechamsm, of a guldefor the cord to be covered,

3. The combination with' an oscillatory needle and cooperating loop throwing mechanism, of a guide vfor directing the cord to be covered beneath the -path of saidneedle, a surrounding guide for wrapping a fabric strip about the cord and for turning the` opposite edges ofvsaid strip under, a foot for holding the turned edges of said str ip adjacent to eachother, and a feed roll com-A .'prising a serrated portion for engaging the lbottom of the covered cord and radially serrated flanges onv opposite Sides of said cord,`said ianges being adjustable towards and fromeach other to diminish or enlarge the space therebetween.
