My invention comprises in the present 1nstance a paper deflector or apron 27 made preferably of sheet metal and curved to conform to the curvatuie of the platen. Said defiectoris arranged at the under side of the platen and is secured by screws 28 to blocks 29 which may vbear rotatively on the rock shaft 11, thus adapting the deflector to turn on the axis 13. Arms 30 fixed to the under side of the deflector or plate 27 at its rear and depending therefrom have coiled springs 31 hooked over ltheir notched lower end portions, said springs extending foi'- ward and vbeing anchored to the cross bar 7 'of the platen frame. Said springs 31 normally maintain the front portion of the deflector plate 27 in spring pressed contactive engagement with the platen ror the paper thereon. The front upper edge of said plate 27 is extended 'upward as vclose to the printing line yas is possible without interfering with the types, and said edge is found useful as a printing line indicator. The
'springs 31 cause a lightpr'essure of the frontl upper edge 4 portion of the defiector Vplate 27 against the platen. lt will beobserved that unlike the usual construction, the plate 27 is mounted and spring pressed independently of the niain feed roller 10 and the other paper feed and paper pressure devices. The deflector plate A27 is formed with openings or windows 'indicated at 32 through which the sectionsrof the feed rollers 10 and 10a 'protrude and contactively engage'with the platen. In addition to the guiding device or deflector plate 27, a supplementary guiding device is provided which is designed to facilitate the introduction of paper into the open throat and the front feeding of such paper. ,Said suppleinentaiy guiding device or deflector contrivance is preferably mounted on the bail member 17-23 and comprises a square rod or rock shaft 34 which is arranged forward of and parallel with the shaft 19. Said rock shaft is provided at its ends with pintles 35 which bear in openings in the bail arms' 18. The radial teeth of the pinion 37 constantly niesh with the teeth 38 of a gear sector 39 vhaving a 'hub portion 40 which bears vrotatively on the shaft 17 somewhat to the right of the left-hand arm 18. The sector 39 is formed with elongated slots indicated zit-.41 which receive the Shanks of headedscrews 42 that are threaded into a triangular plate 43. Said screws clamp the sectoral plate 39 'and the plate 43 together, and .coeoperate 'with the slots 41 to afford relative adjust ments of the parts 39 and 43. Integral with the plate 43 is a rearwardly extending finger 44 which is adapted to lengage with the left-hand end portion of the deflector plate 27, the upper 'edge of said plate being cut away to the left ofthe platen Vto provide a contact face 4.5. From Fig. 1 it will be `rseen that the finger 44 is offset leftwaiid so that its up and down plane of movement is to the left and clear of the platen. The plate 43 is of course perforated to fit over and bear on the shaft 17 in line with the perforation in the hub '40, and the two-part device 39, 43 is constantly spring pressed by "a coiled spring 46 Awhich is wound around the shaft 17 and has fone end hooked under the plate 43. The opposite or inner end portion of said spring fits loosely over the body portion of a collar 47 having a flange 48 which receives said screws 49 whereby the collar is fixed to the shaft 17. rEhe inner end of lthe spring 46 is bent out to fit into a hole 50 in said fiange. 'vention 'there is provided'iny combination f iso` independent of the release of the feed rollers. It is further to be noted that means are provided which are operative by one ley to throw one deflector off and concurrently for bringing the normally inoperative deflector into paper guiding position relatively to the platen, the thrown-off deflector, when thus released, providing a throat or guiding mouth which facilitates the introduction of the paper at the front side of the platen. lt is to be understood, of course, that paper may be introduced at the rcar of the platen 'over the detlector 27 and fed forward under the platen in the usual way, the` defiector 2T guiding the paper when thus fed and holding it close to the platen at the printing line. Also, the paper bail contrivance embodying the rolls 22.-93 may be employed in association with my novel devices to facilitate the guiding and controlling of the work sheets. rl`hus, for example, in Fig. 3 where the parts are positioned to receive the front-fed sheet a, the pressure bail is shown as maintaining the upper or advanced portion of another work sheet against the platen and so that it cannot fall forward and interfere with the proper front feeding or introduction of sheet a. After the sheet a has been introduced and positioned, the deflector 27 may be thrown on to hold it ane guide it as it is fed forward thereafter in the usual way. The bail or pressure device and the guiding device or supplemental deiector have a conrmon support, the latter device being mounted on the bail and thus being supported from the bail support, which in turn is the traveling carriage or carrier comprisingr in the present instance the truck l-a and the platen frame G, 7. Both deflectors while they may be moved relatively to the platen transversely thereof, yet have a consta-nt relationship with the platen, considered lengthwise thereof, during its traveling movements and whatever its longitudinal position.
In the present case, I am making only claims which are specific to the construct-ions shown herein as distinguished from my copending application filed herewith, Sr. No. 625,499. Broader claims to cover the constructions of both applications have been made in said (3o-pending application.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a releasable feed roller, a paper deflector, key operated means for releasing said detlector independently of the release of said feed roller, and means for locking said defiector in released position while said feed roller remains in. operative position.
2. In a typewriting machine,- the combination of a platen, a paper deflector nor- Inally co-operative therewith, a second paper deflector normally maintained in inopera-` tive position, the two deflectors having a constant relationship to the platen lengthwise thereof during traveling movements of the platen, and means for moving said first recited deflector away from the platen and concurrently moving said second recited defiector towards the platen,rso that the two detlectors approach the ends o f their movements together.
3. ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a paper deflector normally co-operative therewith, a second paper defiector normally maintained in inoperative position. and means controlled by a single hey for throwing said first recited deflector off and for bringing said second recited deflector into paper guiding position relatively to the platen. il. ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a feed roller, releasing means therefor including a release key, a normally operative paper deflector, a second deflector normally maintained in inoperative position, and key controlled means for actuating said defiectors, the actuating key for both deliectors being operative independently of said release key.
ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a paper deflectorpartly underlying the platen, a. second paper deflector mounted at the front of the platen independently of the first recited deflector, and a single key operated means for concurrently controlling said two deflectors. 1
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a paper pressure device co-operative with the platen at its front side,
and a paper guide device at the front of the platen, one of said devices being mounted on the other.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combinationof a platen, a pressure roll device cooperative with the platen above the printing line, and a paper guide device mounted on said pressure roll device. y
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a pressure roll device co-operative with the platen above the printing line, said device being pivotally supported so that it may be swung towards and away from the platen, and a paper guide device pivotally supported on said pressure device and movable into and out of effective position independently of said roll device.
9. ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a paper bail, and a paper deflector mounted on said bail.
