Be it known that I, ALFRED E. BRUNS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes which are provided with a cover and which are adapted to receive an inner container holding any suitable useful substance.
The invention, although it is not to be s0 limited in its application, is particularly adapted for use in sheet metal powder boxes the inner containers of which carry or hold face or talcum powder and are preferably made of paper.
At the present time it is customary for the manufacturers of the metal boxes to ship them to the powder manufacurers without the inner paper powder-containers. The boxes are then loaded with the powder-containers by the powder manufacturers by the application of a suitable adhesive to the inner wall of the body of the box or to the outer wall of the powder container whereby the container will be held in proper position in and against removal from the box bodies. This loading operation in the manner described is a laborious, time-consuming and costly one and it is the principal object of the invention to produce a box the construction of which will permit it to be loaded with the powder container without the use of any adhesive and by means of which the container will be as effectively held in position within the box as if an adhesive had been used.

Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing:
1 indicates the box body or lower part and 2 the box cover, the lower edge of the annular side wall of which is provided with a bead 3. The horizontal or end walls of said body and cover may be depressed as at l and 5 respectively if so desired. 6 indicates an annular collar or other intermediate member which isv open at either end and which is provided with a somewhat enlarged annular bead 7 pressed out from the metal, said collarv having the upper edge of the wall thereof bent or curled around on itself to form a bead 8 for a purpose which will be hereinafter explained. The lower portion or flange of the collar 6 is adapted to be inserted and forced within the box body 1 and it is held therein by a very tight frictional engagement making its removal somewhat dilicult, so that it then in reality constitutesa part of and for all practical purposes is a part of said body. The cover 2 is adapted to be .slipped over the upper portion or flange of the collar 6 and it is held thereto by a frictional engagement therewith suflicient to prevent its falling from said collar but not sufficient to vprevent its being easily removed therefrom. vWhen the parts are thus assembled they assume the position shown in Fig. 8 with the enlarged bead 7 acting as a stop which is engaged both by the upper edge of the side wall of the body and by the bead 3 of the cover 2. Also it is found desirable in some cases and as illustrated to have the lower edge of the wall of the collar extend downwardly in the annular space formed by the side wall of the body 1 and the depression 4 in the end wall or base thereof.

Said container is preferably made of paper and the upper wall 10 thereof comprises a disk which merely rests on the upper edge of the annular side wall thereof without being fastened thereto, it being held in this position by a paper seal 11 pasted thereover as well as over the annular side wall as shown in Fig. 1. The lower wall of the container is provided with an annular opening 12 through which the container is filled with face or other powder and the annular opening 12 is then sealed with a paper seal 13 (Fig. 3).
The box is shipped by the manufacturers to the powder manufacturers in three parts to wit: the body 1, cover 2, and collar G. To load the boxes with the powder containers the container holding the powder is slipped within the collar, with which it snugly interfits as previously described, so that the upper ends of the container or that side on which the disk 10 is located contacts with the bead 8 which acts as a stop and prevents the container from' falling out of the collar. The lower portion or flange of the collar is then inserted or forced within the body 1 as above explained, the cover is applied to the collar, and the box is ready for use by the consumer. When it is first used the cover is removed and the paper seal l1 of the container is broken to permit the removal of the disk l0 and expose the powder, the container at all times being held against removal or displacement by the bead 8. It will be noted that it is desirable although not necessary to so construct the parts as shown in Fig. 3 whereby a space obtains intermediate the end wall of the cover and the cont-ainer which is adapted to be received by a powder puff (not shown).
ln the modification illustrated in Fig. l l dispense entirely with the bead 7 on the collar the side wall of which is straight and smooth. I also provide the body l with a bead 14 on the upper edge of the side wall thereof which is adapted to be engaged by the bead 3 oi' the cover. The other details of construction of the modification are similar to the preferred form of the invention.
What l claim as my invention is l. In a box, a body holding a removable and separate inner container and comprising two parts to wit: a lower part and an intermediate part both of which are held together by tight frictional engagement, a bead on said intermediate part constructed to engage the edge of said container to prevent removal thereof and a removable cover for said intermediate part.
2. In a box, a body holding a removable and separate inner container fitting snugly therein, said body comprising two parts to wit: a lower part and an intermediate part both of which are held together by tight frictional engagement, a bead on said intermediate part engaged by an edge of a wall of said lower part, a second bead on said intermediate part adapted to prevent removal of said container and a cover frictionally held on said intermediate part and provided with a bead engaging the Iirstnamed bead on said intermediate part.
3. A box adapted to hold an inner container and comprising a lower member, an intermediate member and a cover, said lower and intermediate members being separable to permit the insertion of said container but normally held together by tight frictional engagement, said intermediate member including retaining means for said container and extending' above said bottom member for engagement with said cover.
4. A box adapted to hold an inner container and comprising a lower member including a bottom portion, an intermediate member including an abutment, and a cover member, said intermediate member being relatively tightly fitted to said lower member, said abutment and bottom portion being so constructed as to normally hold said container in said box, said cover member being relatively loosely fitted to said box in position to hide said abutment and said inner container.
5. In combination, an open-bottomed inner container, a box adapted to hold said container and comprising a lower member including a bottom portion, an intermediate member extending above said lower member andprovided with an abutment, and a cover member, said intermediate member being relatively tightly litted to said lower member, said abutment and bottom portion being so arranged that said container will normally be held in said box thereby, said cover member being relatively loosely fitted over the projecting portion of said intermediate member.
