SAW-BLADE FASTENER.
Application filed November 22, 1924. Serial No. 751,583.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALPHoNsE L. LoUGH- LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Blade Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand saws and its main object is to provide an improved means for fastening the blade and the handle of a saw of the kind commonly used by carpenters, so that they may be readily detached when the tool is not in use.
Another object is to provide a fastening means of the above described character which permits of fastening or detaching the handle and the blade without screw-thread, thereby eliminating the use of screw drivers, wrenches or other tools, and still further objects reside in details of construction as will be fully disclosed in the course of the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which the parts included in my invention are designated by numerical reference characters in each of the views,
Figure 1 represents a side view of a saw handle with a part of the blade attached thereto by the fastening involved in my invention.
Figure 2, a sectional elevation of the fastening taken on the line 22, Figure 1, and drawn to an exaggerated scale;
Figure 3, an end View of the clamping member of the fastening; and
Figure 4, a view similar to Figure 2 illustrating a modification in the construction of the fastening.
The blade 5 of the .saw is as usual inserted in a slot 6 in an end of a handle 7 of conventional form, and secured in place by fastening devices which extend through alined apertures of the two parts.
In the present construction, the saw blade has a plurality of round holes 8 which when the parts are fastened together, are axially alined with open-ended bores 9 of larger diameter in the slotted portion of the'handle.
The fasteners by which the blade and the handle are connected as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, each consist essentially of two members 10 and 12 one of which fits in one of the holes of the saw blade and is held in place by a clamping action of the other member.
The member 12 comprises a circular head l2 having a central hollow longitudinally split, and transversely corrugated shank 12 to provide a plurality of radially resilient sinuous clamp-j aws.
The other member 10, consists of a headed pin, the shank 1O of which has corrugations corresponding to those of the jaws of the other member.
The end portion of the shank of the member 10 is made to fit snugly in the hole of the saw blade and the fiat disk-like head 10 of the member is beveled to facilitate withdrawal of the member by inserting the fingernails or a screw driver or other suitable tool beneath the edge of the head.
The shank 12 of the clamp-member 12 of the fastener fits loosely in the bore of the saw handle at one side of the blade and the head 12* of the member is partially countersunk into a depression in the outer surface of the handle, and may be recessed as at 12 to admit the head 10 of'the pin member 10.
The clamp member is permanently fastened to the handle by screws 13 driven through apertures of its head and the pin member when pushed into the clamp member after the saw blade is properly inserted in the slot of the handle, enters thecorresponding hole of the blade and thus co-oper ates with other similar fasteners to rigidly connect the handle to the blade.
The coordinating corrugations of the shanks of the two members secure the inner member against accidental axial displacement and to detach the handle, it is but necessary to withdraw the inner member by inserting the finger nails or a suitable tool beneath the beveled edge thereof.
In addition to the two members hereinabove described the fastener shown in Figures 1 and 2, includes a third member 14; which is driven into the bore of the saw handle at the opposite side of the blade to provide an abutment for the pin-member.
The member 14 consists to this end of a headed stud which fits snugly in the bore of the handle and is permanently secured in place by screws 15 driven through openings in its flat, circular head which is preferably countersunk into a correspondingly shaped gepression in the outer surface of the han- The modified construction illustrated in Figure 4 differs from that hereinabove de scribed in that the clamp-member 16 and the pin-member 17 of the fastener are inserted in the bore of the handle, at opposite sides of the saw blade.
The pin member is lengthened to co-operate with the clamp jaws of the other member and its shank is partially enlarged as at 17 to fit the bore of the handle.
It is apparent that in this form of the invention, it is a part of the shank of the pin member between its corrugated portion and its head, which engages in the corresponding hold of the saw blade.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a saw, a handle and a blade having alined apertures, and a fastening comprising a hollow clamp-member in an aperture of the handle, and a pin member extending through the clamp1nember and into the aperture of the blade, the pin-men'iber being held against accidental displacement by clamping engagement of the other member.
2. In a saw, a handle and a blade having alined apertures, and a fastening comprising a hollow clamp member in an aperture of the handle at one side of the blade, a. pin member extending through the clamp member into the aperture of the blade and clampingly engaged by the other member, and an abutment member in the aperture of the handle at the opposite side of the blade, e-igaged by the end of the pin member.
3. In a saw, a handle and a blade having alined apertures, and a fastening comprising a clamp-member fixed on the handle and having a recessed head and a resilient and corrugated shank, and a correspondingly grooved pin extending through the shank, into the aperture of the blade and having a head in the recess of the head of the said member.
4. In a saw, the combination of a slotted handle, an apertured blade in the slot of the handle, and a fastening comprising a locking member having a shank fitting in the aperture of the blade, and a fixed holding member on the handle, co-operating with the locking member to secure the latter subject to longitudinal non-rotary withdrawal.
5. In a saw, the combination of aslotted handle, an apertured blade in the slot of the handle, and a fastening comprising a looking member having a shank fitting in the aperture of the blade, and a fixed holding member on the handle, adapted to clan'ipingly secure the locking member subject to longitudinal non-rotary withdrawal.
(3. In a saw, the combination of a slotted handle, an apertured blade in the slot of the handle, and a fastening comprising a hold in member fixed on the handle and having resilient corrugated clamping jaws, and a locking member having a shank fitting in the aperture of the blade and provided with a corrugation co-operating with the jaws of the holding member.
7. In a saw, the combination of a slotted handle, an apertured blade in the slot of the handle, and a fastening comprising a headed holding member fixed on the handle and having a resilient and corrugated shank, and a headed locking member fitting in the aperture of the blade and having a corrugated shank engaged with the shank of the holding member.
8. In a saw, the combination of a slotted handle, an apertured blade in the slot of the handle, and a fastening comprising a holding member fixed on the handle and having a recessed head and a resilient and corrugated shank, and a locking member fitting in the aperture of the blade and having a corrugated shank in the shank of the holding member and a bevel-edged head in the recessed head of the same.
